Background And Aims: Nursing home research may involve eliciting information from managers, yet response rates for Directors of Nursing have not been recently studied. As a part of a more extensive study, we surveyed all nursing homes in three states in 2018 and 2019, updating how to survey these leaders effectively. We focus on response rates as a measure of non-response error and comparison of nursing home's characteristics to their population values as a measure of representation error.

Objective: To estimate temporary changes in the inciden-ce of SARS-CoV-2-confirmed hospitalizations (by date of symptom onset) by age group during and after the national lockdown.

Materials And Methods: For each age group g, we computed the proportion E(g) of individuals in that age group among all cases aged 10-59y during the early lock-down period (April 20-May 3, 2020), and the corresponding proportion L(g) during the late lockdown (May 18-31, 2020) and post-lockdown (June 15-28, 2020) periods and computed the prevalence ratio: PR(g)=L(g)/E(g).

Results: For the late lockdown and post-lockdown periods, the highest PR values were found in age groups 15-19y (late: PR=1.

Although natural killer (NK) cells are a known major player in anti-tumor immunity, the effect of genetic variation in NK-associated genes on survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unknown. Here, in 1,185 with NSCLC cases of a discovery dataset, we evaluated associations of 28,219 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 276 NK-associated genes with their survival. These patients were from the reported genome-wide association study (GWAS) from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial.

Arsenic trioxide (ATO) is generally well tolerated for treatment of APL. We present a patient with severe watery diarrhea and pancreatitis thought to be due to ATO toxicity in the setting of obesity and acute kidney injury. Future studies evaluating ATO levels in patients experiencing toxicities may help guide dose modifications.

Background To understand when results from observational studies and randomized trials are comparable, we performed an observational emulation of a target trial designed to ask similar questions as the VALIDATE (Bivalirudin Versus Heparin in ST-Segment and Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction in Patients on Modern Antiplatelet Therapy) randomized trial. The VALIDATE trial compared the effect of bivalirudin and heparin during percutaneous coronary intervention on the risk of death, myocardial infarction, and bleeding across Sweden. Methods and Results We specified the protocol of a target trial similar to the VALIDATE trial, then emulated the target trial in the period before the VALIDATE trial took place using data from the SWEDEHEART (Swedish Web System for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-Based Care in Heart Disease Evaluated According to Recommended Therapies) registry-the same registry in which the trial was undertaken.

Background Long-term air pollution exposure is a significant risk factor for inpatient hospital admissions in the general population. However, we lack information on whether long-term air pollution exposure is a risk factor for hospital readmissions, particularly in individuals with elevated readmission rates. Methods and Results We determined the number of readmissions and total hospital visits (outpatient visits+emergency room visits+inpatient admissions) for 20 920 individuals with heart failure.

Background Previous studies have found associations between fine particulate matter <2.5 µm in diameter (PM) and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among populations with no CVD history. Less is understood about susceptibility of adults with a history of CVD and subsequent PM-related CVD events and whether current regulation levels for PM are protective for this population.

Background Maternal chronic hypertension is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies examined the association between either chronic hypertension or antihypertensive treatment and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effect of chronic hypertension/antihypertensive treatment on adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-PUFAs) were found to correlate with a lower risk of cardiovascular death, particularly sudden cardiac death, among patients with acute coronary syndrome.
  • In a study of over 2,000 patients, higher levels of long-chain ω3-PUFAs were associated with significantly reduced odds of cardiovascular death, with the highest levels showing up to 63% lower odds.
  • The study noted a weaker correlation for α-linolenic acid, and no significant links were found between ω3-PUFAs and other causes of cardiovascular death unrelated to sudden events like myocardial infarction or atrial fibrillation.

Aim: Biogeographical regions (realms) reflect patterns of co-distributed species (biotas) across space. Their boundaries are set by dispersal barriers and difficulties of establishment in new locations. We extend new methods to assess these two contributions by quantifying the degree to which realms intergrade across geographical space and the contributions of individual species to the delineation of those realms.

Introduction: The interaction between delirium and dementia is complex. We examined if Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers in patients without clinical dementia are associated with increased risk of postoperative delirium, and whether AD biomarkers demonstrate a graded association with delirium severity.

Methods: Participants ( = 59) were free of clinical dementia, age 70 years, and scheduled for elective total knee or hip arthroplasties.

Background Mounting evidence suggests that circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are critical indicators of cardiovascular disease. However, prospective studies linking circulating miRNAs to incident acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are limited, and the underlying effect of associated miRNA on incident ACS remains unknown. Methods and Results Based on a 2-stage prospective nested case-control design within the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, we profiled plasma miRNAs from 23 pairs of incident ACS cases and controls by microarray and validated the candidate miRNAs in 572 incident ACS case-control pairs using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.

  • BCMA-targeting CAR T cell therapy is effective in treating multiple myeloma but often leads to relapses, with resistance mechanisms poorly understood.
  • A study examined a patient who relapsed after CAR T therapy and found a specific genetic alteration (biallelic loss of BCMA) that hindered the effectiveness of subsequent treatments.
  • The findings highlight the importance of monitoring BCMA gene changes in myeloma cells after CAR T therapy to better understand and address relapses.

The relationship between vitamin D status or supplementation and cancer outcomes has been examined in several meta-analyses. To address remaining knowledge gaps, we conducted a systematic overview and critical appraisal of pertinent meta-analyses. For meta-analyses of trials, we assessed their quality using AMSTAR-2 (A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews), strength of associations using umbrella review methodology and credibility of evidence using GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) criteria.
