Article Synopsis
  • A study in Iran reviewed a 7-year experience using vancomycin powder during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to prevent infections, presenting contrasting results compared to existing literature.
  • Analysis of 2024 TKA patients showed that those receiving vancomycin had significantly lower rates of suspected superficial infections and prosthetic joint infections compared to historical controls.
  • The findings suggest local vancomycin is a promising infection prevention strategy in TKA surgery, but more rigorous studies are needed to fully assess its effectiveness.

Background: The probable impact of growth hormone (GH) as a heart failure (HF) treatment strategy is still less investigated. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the relation of 3-month GH prescription on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), interventricular septum (IVS), posterior left ventricle (LV) thickness, end systolic and end diastolic diameters (ESD and EDD), and pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) among Iranian individuals suffering from HF due to MI attack.

Methods: A total of 16 clinically stable participants with HF diagnosis and LVEF < 40% were selected for enrollment in this pilot randomized double-blinded study.

June 2022

Bone and Joint Diseases Research Center, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chamran Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran.

Purpose: Controversies exist on the relative contribution of sagittal spino-pelvic alignment on pathogenesis of lumbar disc herniation.

Methods: Spinopelvic alignment parameters, pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, sacral slope, pelvic radius-S1 end-plate ratio and pelvic radius-S1 angle, in 52 patients with lumbar disc herniation were compared with the same measurements in 43 healthy adult volunteers.

Results: Statistical analysis revealed significant difference in pelvic incidence and sacral slope between patients with lumbar disc herniation and normal population.

Research Center for Bone and Joint Diseases, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chamran Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran.

Scalp arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal vascular lesions, which can be managed effectively and safely with surgical or endovascular approaches. Here, we discuss a case of scalp AVM malformation in a 25-year-old female, in which due to the proximity of the feeder artery to right orbit, surgical excision was preferred and the AVM was excised with an uneventful post-op course.

Methods: In a comparative retrospective study, on 46 patients (48 ft), the correlation between post-operative radiographic findings including hallux valgus angle (HVA) and first MTP dorsiflexion angle (MTPDA) and clinical outcomes including VAS pain, modified AOFAS hallux score, and FFI questionnaire were evaluated. Moreover, clinical outcomes were compared between cases with pre-operative diagnosis of first MTP inflammatory arthritis, hallux valgus, hallux varus, and grade 3 and 4 of hallux rigidus.

Background: Idiopathic flatfeet are usually caused by attenuation of the medial soft tissues rather than a lateral osseous deficiency. Debate continues on whether spring ligament attenuation or posterior tibial tendon (PTT) dysfunction is the initial driver for the deformity. Our comparative prospective study aimed to quantify the radiological and clinical outcomes of 2 techniques for spring ligament reconstruction using a hamstring graft or a synthetic ligament.
