Department of Research and Education, BioScience Project, Wakefield, MA, 01880, USA.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by its progression of motor-related symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking and balance. Comorbid conditions in PD individuals include insulin resistance (IR) and narcolepsy-like sleep patterns. The intersecting sleep symptoms of both conditions include excessive daytime sleepiness, hallucinations, insomnia, and falling into REM sleep more quickly than an average person.

Direct catalytic coupling of nitrobenzene hydrogenation and cyclohexanol dehydrogenation was studied in the gas phase over mesoporous MgO-SBA15 supported Cu nanoparticles. This approach avoids an external supply of H and utilizes the liberated H from the dehydrogenation step of the first reactant for the hydrogenation reaction of the second reactant. A catalyst series consisting of four Cu/MgO-SBA15 mesoporous solids with varying Cu loadings (5-20 wt%) were prepared and systematically characterized by BET, ICP, XRD, TPR, TPD, FT-IR, SEM, XPS, and TEM.

Two highly active and stable Pd-based intermetallic nanocrystals with early d-metals PdTi and PdZr have been developed. The nanocrystals are synthesized by co-reduction of the respective salts of Pd and Ti/Zr. Hard X-ray photoemission Spectroscopy (HAXPES) analysis of the nanocrystals indicates that the electronic properties of Pd are modified significantly, as evident from the lowering of the d-band center of Pd.

December 2019

Pathogen Biology Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, 500046, India; Laboratory Sciences and Services Division, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Electronic address:

Tuberculosis (TB) is the deadly infectious disease challenging the public health globally and its impact is further aggravated by co-infection with HIV and the emergence of drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In this study, we attempted to characterise the Rv2004c encoded protein, a member of DosR regulon, for its role in drug resistance. In silico docking analysis revealed that Rv2004c binds with streptomycin (SM).

The present work was aimed at the establishment of baseline radioactive data in the proposed Lambapur and Peddagattu uranium mining areas in the Andhra Pradesh state, India. The background concentrations of naturally occurring radioactivity in the near-surface soils of the study areas were estimated and the results were analysed. The (238)U concentration in the near-surface soil of the study area was found to vary from 100 to 176 Bq kg(-1), with a mean of 138±24 Bq kg(-1).

The research work on alternate fuels has been the topic of wider interest in the context of depletion of fossil fuels and increasing of pollution levels of the engines with conventional fossil fuels. Alcohols and vegetable oils are considered to replace diesel fuels as they are renewable in nature. However, use of alcohols in internal combustion engines is limited in India, as these fuels are diverted to PetroChemical industries and hence much emphasis is given to the non-edible vegetable oils as alternate fuels in internal combustion engines.

The major pollutants emitted from compression ignition (CI) engine with diesel as fuel are smoke and nitrogen oxides (NOx). When the diesel engine is run with alternate fuels, there is need to check alcohols (methanol or ethanol) and aldehydes also. Alcohols cannot be used directly in diesel engine and hence engine modification is essential as alcohols have low cetane number and high latent hear of vaporization.

Adulteration of automotive fuels, especially, gasoline with cheaper fuels is widespread throughout south Asia. Some adulterants decrease the performance and life of the engine and increase the emission of harmful pollutants causing environmental and health problems. The present investigation is carried out to study the exhaust emissions from a single cylinder spark ignition (SI) engine with kerosene blended gasoline with different versions of the engine, such as conventional engine and catalytic coated engine with different proportions of the kerosene ranging from 0% to 40% by volume in steps of 10% in the kerosene-gasoline blend.
