Deficits in executive functioning (EF) are often still present at the chronic stage after stroke, which may negatively impact independent living. The objectives of this study were (a) to characterize the EF and independence in daily living of community-dwelling individuals with chronic stroke by using pen-and-paper and performance-based EF assessments, (b) to explore correlations between scores detected by different EF assessments and (c) to assess the correlations between EF and independence in basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). This cross-sectional study included 50 (30 men and 20 women) community-dwelling individuals [mean (SD) age 59.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Affiliated to the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Ramat Gan, 5262100 Tel Aviv, Israel. Electronic address:

Background: Ankle fractures are extremely common and represent nearly one quarter of all lower-limb fractures. Techniques for fixation of displaced fractures of the lateral malleolus have remained essentially unchanged in recent decades. The current gold standard of treating unstable fractures is with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), using plates and screws construct.

We present a dataset that combines multimodal biosignals and eye tracking information gathered under a human-computer interaction framework. The dataset was developed in the vein of the MAMEM project that aims to endow people with motor disabilities with the ability to edit and author multimedia content through mental commands and gaze activity. The dataset includes EEG, eye-tracking, and physiological (GSR and Heart rate) signals collected from 34 individuals (18 able-bodied and 16 motor-impaired).

Objectives: Contextual self-concealment in the psychooncology literature has been found to be associated with elevated distress. The current study aimed to understand the dyadic relationships of an individual's perception of spousal support and dispositional perspective-taking with own and partner's levels of self-concealment behavior, among couples coping with cancer.

Methods: A subsample of 61 heterosexual couples coping with cancer was taken from a large-scale cross-sectional study.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most common reoperations after hip arthroscopy. Although arthroscopy causes changes in the hip joint and the surrounding soft tissues that can make THA more challenging, previous reports on arthroscopy before THA have not demonstrated any significant effect on clinical outcomes.

Methods: Patients who underwent a THA following an ipsilateral hip arthroscopy were matched to a control group of THA patients with no history of ipsilateral hip surgery.

Unlabelled: ABSTRACTObjective:Both trait and contextual self-concealment, as well as shame- and guilt-proneness, have previously been found to be associated with psychological distress. However, findings regarding the associations between these variables among patients with cancer and among the spouses of patients with cancer are limited. The aim of the current study was therefore to investigate the relationship between shame-proneness and psychological distress (anxiety and depression) by examining the mediating role of both trait and contextual self-concealment among patients with cancer and among the spouses of patients with cancer.

Factor XI (FXI) deficiency is an autosomal bleeding disorder, usually posttrauma or postsurgery, characterized by reduced levels of coagulation FXI in plasma. The disease is highly prevalent in Ashkenazi Jews (heterozygote frequency, ∼9%), whereas it is considered a rare condition in most populations (prevalence of the severe deficiency, 1 in 10 in the white population). So far, >190 causative mutations have been identified throughout the gene.

Background: Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) is becoming an increasingly utilized procedure for the management of end-stage ankle arthritis. Elderly patients are the fastest growing segment of the population in the western world, creating a unique challenge to the health economics of our era. Determining if elderly patients with end-stage ankle arthritis demonstrate the same improvements in clinical outcomes and functional measures of gait following TAA would be valuable.

Ankle fractures are the third most common osseous injury in the elderly, behind hip and distal radius fractures. While there is a rich history of clinical advancement in the timing, technique, perioperative management, and associated risks of hip fractures, similar evaluations are only more recently being undertaken for ankle fractures. Traditionally, elderly patients were treated more conservatively; however, nonoperative management has been found to be associated with increased mortality.

Tissue expansion using implantable expanders is a useful means of generating surplus tissue for reconstruction of defects such as scarring following burns. The authors describe their technique of incisions distant to the desired location of expander placement, and remote dissection of the expander pocket with hydrodissection and blunt forceps. A total of 81 expanders were placed in 30 consecutive patients, 81% of whom had burn scars due for reconstruction.

Background: PD-1 and its ligands are expressed in urothelial cancer, and findings have shown that inhibition of the PD-1 pathway has clinical benefit. We aimed to assess the safety and activity of an anti-PD-1 antibody pembrolizumab in patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer.

Methods: This study was part of the non-randomised, multi-cohort, open-label, phase 1b KEYNOTE-012 basket trial.

What Should Be the Target Blood Pressure in Elderly Patients With Diabetes?

Diabetes Care

August 2016

Hypertension Unit, Department of Internal Medicine D, Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Tel Aviv, Israel Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel

Hypertension is very common in elderly subjects with type 2 diabetes. The coexistence of hypertension and diabetes can be devastating to the cardiovascular system, and in these patients, tight blood pressure (BP) control is particularly beneficial. Little information is available regarding the target BP levels in elderly hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes, and therefore extrapolation from data in the general population should be done.

Background: Impaired dexterity of the weaker upper extremity is common post stroke and it is recommended that these individuals practice many repetitions of movement to regain function. However, stroke rehabilitation methods do not achieve the required intensity to be effective. Touchscreen tablet technology may be used as a motivating tool for self-training impaired dexterity of the weaker upper extremity post stroke.
