Tissue fibrosis is a progressive pathological process with excessive deposition of extracellular matrix proteins (ECM). Myofibroblasts, identified by alpha-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) expression, play an important role in tissue fibrosis by producing ECM. Here, we found that the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1) induced gene expressions associated with inflammation and fibrosis in lung fibroblasts.

The urgent calls for action on climate change underscore the importance of increasing sustainable behavior among individuals who have traditionally veered away from it, such as those on the political right. Utilizing data from four geopolitical regions across 24 countries, we explore whether vulnerability to natural disasters, brought on by either experiencing or anticipating a natural disaster, is a crucial factor. We find that as vulnerability to natural disasters increases, sustainable consumption intentions significantly increase among rightists in Western Europe, Israel, and the United States.

For change detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, amplitude change detection (ACD) and coherent change detection (CCD) are widely employed. However, time-series SAR data often contain noise and variability introduced by system and environmental factors, requiring mitigation. Additionally, the stability of SAR signals is preserved when calibration accounts for temporal and environmental variations.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have drawn great attention as promising candidates for realizing next-generation printed thermoelectrics (TEs). However, the dispersion instability and resulting poor printability of CNTs have been major issues for their practical processing and device applications. In this work, we investigated the TE characteristics of water-processable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and single-walled CNT (SWCNT) composite.

Background/objectives: The ectodysplasin A () gene, a member of the tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily, is involved in the early epithelial-mesenchymal interaction that regulates ectoderm-derived appendage formation. Numerous studies have shown that mutations in the gene can cause X-linked ectodermal dysplasia (ED) and non-syndromic oligodontia (NSO). Accordingly, this study aimed to identify the causative genetic mutations of the gene.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is designated as one of the prime causes of chemoresistance in many cancers. In our previous study we established that cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer (OC) is associated with EMT using sensitive OV90 cells and its resistant counterparts OV90CisR1 and OV90CisR2. In this study, we revealed through RNAseq analysis that ITGA1 can play essential part in EMT mediated cisplatin resistance in OC.

Background/aims: Acute decompensation (AD) is defined as the development of complications related to portal hypertension and liver dysfunction that affect the progression of chronic liver disease (CLD) or liver cirrhosis (LC). Variations exist in patient demographics and prognostic outcomes of AD based on the aetiology of CLD, encompassing LC. However, limited research has been conducted to analyse these discrepancies across aetiologies.

The aim of this study was to investigate the locational distribution and potential mechanisms of retinal hemorrhages in newborns using fundus photography. A retrospective analysis of 98 consecutive newborns with retinal hemorrhages in at least one eye and 30 control newborns without retinal hemorrhages after uneventful delivery was conducted. Retinal hemorrhages were diagnosed and characterized using fundus photography and indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) has emerged as a potent bioactive compound with proven efficacy in wound healing, tissue regeneration, and anti-inflammatory applications and is predominantly derived from salmonid gonads. However, this study presents a groundbreaking advancement by successfully extracting and characterizing PDRN from microbial sources, specifically , marking the first report to utilize microbial-, biome-, or -derived PDRN (L-PDRN). The findings demonstrate the enhanced biological properties of L-PDRN over traditional salmon-derived PDRN across several assays.

Background: Intradermal injection of CPM-HA20G, a low-viscoelasticity hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler with glycerol, has been shown to be effective for facial rejuvenation in Caucasians, but research in Asians is limited.
Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CPM-HA20G in enhancing facial skin quality in Korean women using a protocol developed by local aesthetic experts.
Patients/methods: In this 24-week prospective, single-arm, open-label study, 20 women received CPM-HA20G injections in the immediate subdermal layer on the anterior cheek (1 mL per side; total 2 mL) in three sessions every 4 weeks.

While animals readily adjust their behavior to adapt to relevant changes in the environment, the neural pathways enabling these changes remain largely unknown. Here, using multiphoton imaging, we investigate whether feedback from the piriform cortex to the olfactory bulb supports such behavioral flexibility. To this end, we engage head-fixed male mice in a multimodal rule-reversal task guided by olfactory and auditory cues.

Innovative anode materials are essential for achieving high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with longer lifetimes. Thus far, only a few studies have explored the use of layered perovskite structures as LIB anode materials. In this study, the study demonstrates the performance and charge/discharge mechanism of the previously undefined Ruddlesden-Popper Li₂La₂Ti₃O₁₀ (RPLLTO) as an anode material for LIBs.

Precise description of the interaction between molecular oxygen and metal surfaces is one of the most challenging topics in quantum chemistry. In this work, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to identify and characterize an adsorption state of molecular oxygen that coordinates to three Ag atoms (μ) on Ag(100). Surprisingly, μ-O cannot be identified as a stable configuration with generalized gradient approximation (GGA)-level density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

The intricate interplay between cellular circadian rhythms, primarily manifested in the chloroplast redox oscillations-characterized by diel hyperoxidation/reduction cycles of 2-Cys Peroxiredoxins-and the nuclear transcription/translation feedback loop (TTFL) machinery within plant cells, demonstrates a remarkable temporal coherence. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the integration of these circadian rhythms remain elusive. Here, we elucidate that the chloroplast redox protein, NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase type-C (NTRC), modulates the integration of the chloroplast redox rhythms and nuclear circadian clocks by regulating intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species and sucrose.

Background: The demand for orthodontic treatment using clear aligners has been gradually increasing because of their superior esthetics compared with conventional fixed orthodontic therapy. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the compressive strength of three-dimensional direct printing aligners (3DPA) with that of conventional thermo-forming aligners (TFA) to determine their clinical applicability. In the experimental group, the 3DPA material TC-85 (TC-85 full) was used to create angular protrusions called rectangular pressure areas (RPA).

Semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors are gaining prominence owing to their high sensitivity, rapid response, and cost-effectiveness. These sensors detect changes in resistance resulting from oxidation-reduction reactions with target gases, responding to a variety of gases simultaneously. However, their inherent limitations lie in selectivity.
