Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the psychiatric effects of the Seoul Halloween crowd crush on victims' families versus the general public, focusing on depression, anxiety, anger, and PTSD.
  • It included 2,220 participants who completed questionnaires to assess their mental health 30 days after the incident, with analyses performed to see how resilience influenced symptoms.
  • Results showed that relatives of victims experienced significantly worse mental health outcomes than the general population, and those with lower resilience faced even greater risks for anxiety and PTSD, suggesting resilience can help buffer against trauma effects.

The association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sarcopenia has been suggested. We investigated sarcopenia's impact on NAFLD severity and its relationship with cardiometabolic risk in adolescents. We conducted a retrospective study on 122 patients aged 13-18 years and diagnosed with both NAFLD and sarcopenia by laboratory tests, abdominal ultrasound (US), and multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis.

: Endobiliary brushing is usually performed in the diagnosis of indeterminate biliary strictures; however, in this setting, brush cytology is limited by a low diagnostic yield and sensitivity. Here, we compared the catheter flushing method (CFM) with the conventional cytologic method (CCM) in terms of cellularity and diagnostic performance. : Endobiliary brushings were obtained during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) from patients with biliary strictures enrolled at six tertiary hospitals.

This study identifies senescent osteocytes in the femur and tibia of young rodents and explores their role in bone remodeling. The proximity of osteoclasts to senescent osteocytes was observed, which is a new finding. Cultured osteocytes, sorted using a podoplanin antibody in FACS, exhibited osteocytic characteristics and increased senescence-related genes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of MTHFR gene polymorphisms on embryological outcomes in IVF/ICSI cycles among Korean women with infertility.
  • Analysis included 173 women and 301 IVF/ICSI cycles, revealing variations in oocyte maturation and good-quality embryo rates based on different MTHFR genotypes.
  • The findings suggest that the 677TT genotype is linked to lower oocyte maturation, while certain combined genotypes (677CC/1298CC, 677CT/1298AA) show higher rates of good-quality embryos, highlighting the significance of genetic factors in reproductive outcomes.

Background: Periostin and human chitinase-3-like protein 1 (YKL-40) have been suggested to be involved in the development of airway fibrosis and remodeling. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum periostin levels and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and between serum YKL-40 levels and AHR in children with asthma, comparing periostin as a marker for Th2 inflammation and atopy with YKL-40.

Methods: The study involved children aged 6-15 years, comprising 75 with asthma and 29 healthy controls.

We developed a modified cardiovascular (CV) Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score using an emergency department-based cohort data, incorporating norepinephrine equivalent dose and lactate to represent current clinical practice patterns for vasopressor utilization and the diagnostic significance of lactate, respectively. In this study, we sought to validate this modified CV-SOFA score in intensive care unit patients with suspected infection using the Marketplace for Medical Information in Intensive Care (MIMIC)-IV database. This was a retrospective study that utilized data from the MIMIC-IV database.

Recent clinical outcomes of multi-regimen chemotherapy in patients with cholangiocarcinoma (CCC) have shown benefits in terms of overall survival. However, repeated endoscopic biliary drainage (EBD) and serious adverse events negatively affect prolongation of the survival period. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of massive hemobilia and the outcomes of its management with fully covered self-expandable metal stents (FC-SEMSs) in patients with hilum-involving CCC receiving multi-regimen chemotherapy.

Micro-CT study of human laryngeal structures using phosphotungstic agent staining.

Surg Radiol Anat

December 2024

Department of Anatomy and Acupoint, College of Korean Medicine, Gachon University, 1332, Seongnam-daero, Seongnam, 13120, Republic of Korea.

Purpose: Traditional dissection methods are primarily limited by challenges in identifying minute structures, which can lead to irreversible tissue damage. Anatomical observation of the larynx is particularly challenging in educational and clinical settings owing to its microscopic structures and complex three-dimensional (3D) nature, making it difficult to dissect. Therefore, this study aimed to demonstrate that micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging of the larynx can serve as an effective alternative for educational and clinical purposes, overcoming these limitations.
