Study Design: This was a bibliometric analysis of the top-cited papers in the top critical care nursing journals as reported by the Journal Citation Report 2023-released in June 2024.

Where do we go from here? The personal impact of adverse events and complications in surgeons: Results from a cross-sectional study.

Objective: Medical error is an inevitable part of modern healthcare, with a potential harmful impact for the patient and the surgeon. The phenomenon of negative personal responses for healthcare workers in the aftermath of adverse events is described as the "second casualty" and can involve significant physical and psychological distress. We present results from a cross-sectional survey of surgeons and their experience in the aftermath of adverse events or complications.

The fate of the rectum in ulcerative colitis at index surgery and beyond-a contemporary cohort.

Purpose: Proctectomy is frequently deferred at index colectomy for ulcerative colitis due to acuity or immunosuppressive treatments. The retained rectum remains symptomatic in over 50% with associated cancer risk. Management options include index or delayed proctectomy with or without restoration of continuity or surveillance.

An update on botulinum toxin treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy, post-traumatic painful neuropathy/neuralgia, post-herpetic neuralgia and occipital neuralgia.

The literature in botulinum toxin treatment for painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN), post traumatic neuralgia (PTN), postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and occipital neuralgia (ON) was reviewed up to Oct 1st, 2024. Using the efficacy criteria set forth by the Assessment and Guideline subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology, the current levels of efficacy for these conditions could be designated as followings: PDN: B (probably effective, two class II study), PTN: A (effective, two class I studies); PHN: A (effective, two class I studies), ON: (undetermined due to lack of blinded investigations). Due to the small number of patients in these studies, proof of efficacy requires conduction of controlled and blinded studies in large cohorts of patients with longer follow ups.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined all operations recorded by orthopaedic trainees in Ireland and the UK between July 2012 and July 2022. The primary outcome was operative autonomy, which was defined as the trainee performing the case without the supervising trainer scrubbed.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have gained significant attention as a desirable choice of biodegradable implant for use in bone repair applications, largely owing to their unique material properties. More recently, Mg and Mg-based alloys have been used as load-bearing metallic scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications, offering promising opportunities in the field. The mechanical properties and relative density of Mg-based alloys closely approximate those of natural human bone tissue, thereby mitigating the risk of stress-shielding effects.

Considerable changes in the approaches to optimal use of blood components and their alternatives, driven by the findings of large randomised controlled trials and improved haemovigilance, have become apparent over the past decade.
