Nemaline myopathy is a rare inherited disorder characterized by weakness, hypotonia, and depressed deep tendon reflexes. It is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, with the most severe phenotype presenting as perinatal akinesia, severe muscle weakness, feeding difficulties and respiratory failure, leading to early mortality. Pathogenic variants in 12 genes, encoding components of the sarcomere or factors related to myogenesis, have been reported in patients affected with the disorder.

Article Synopsis
  • Akathisia is a condition that can happen as a side effect of certain medications, affecting how people move and feel.
  • A study showed that people with akathisia responded differently to certain reflex tests compared to healthy people, suggesting other brain pathways might also be involved.
  • The findings indicate that the reflexes in people with akathisia were more active, which could mean that parts of the brain that usually help control these responses are not working as well.
