The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to increase worldwide, as well as the associated morbidity and mortality and the consequences on the patients' quality of life and countries' economies. CKD often evolves without being recognized by patients and physicians, although the diagnosis is based on two simple laboratory data: the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine analysis. To measure GFR, the knowledge about the physiologic processes at the nephron level, the concept of clearance, and the identification of creatinine as a suitable endogenous marker for measuring the creatinine clearance (CrCl) had to be previously developed.

Two commercial MALDI-TOF MS systems were used to identify 18 isolates, belonging to the Peptoniphilus genus; also the 16S rRNA sequencing identity was compared against the MALDI-TOF MS system results. Bruker Biotyper system provided higher accuracy than Vitek MS system, however, adding spectra could allow a more reliable species level identification.

The kidney-heart relationship has raised interest for the medical population since its vast and complex interaction significantly impacts health. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) generates vascular structure and function changes, with significant hemodynamic effects. The early arterial stiffening in CKD patients is a consequence of the interaction between oxidative stress and chronic vascular inflammation, leading to an accelerated deterioration of left ventricular function and alteration in tissue perfusion.

The hepatitis C virus has a high mutation capacity that leads to the emergence of resistance-associated substitutions (RAS). However, the consequence of resistance selection during new direct-acting antiviral drug (DAA) treatment is not necessarily the therapeutic failure. In fact, DAA treatment has shown a high rate (> 95%) of sustained virological response even when high baseline RAS prevalence has been reported.

Natural Killer (NK) cells play a key role in cancer immunosurveillance. However, NK cells from cancer patients display an altered phenotype and impaired effector functions. In addition, evidence of a regulatory role for NK cells is emerging in diverse models of viral infection, transplantation, and autoimmunity.

Background: Systolic dysfunction in pectus excavatum (PEX) is usually very subtle and mainly focused on the right ventricle (RV), leading to normal or unremarkable cardiac imaging findings unless involving exercise stress.
Objectives: We evaluated systolic function in PEX using longitudinal strain cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), a validated parameter for the assessment of the systolic deformation of subendocardial fibers.
Methods: This prospective registry comprised consecutive patients with PEX who were referred to CMR to define treatment strategies or to establish surgical candidacy.
Introduction: Posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (PC-BPPV) is considered the most common cause of peripheral vertigo in the emergency department (ED). Although the canalith repositioning maneuver (CRM) is the standard of care, the most effective method to deliver it in the ED has been poorly studied.
Objective: To compare two protocols of the Epley maneuver for the treatment of PC-BPPV.

The clinical outcome of patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) amplified breast carcinoma (BC) has improved with the development of anti-HER2 targeted therapies. However, patients can experience disease recurrence after curative intent and disease progression in the metastatic setting. In the current era of evolving immunotherapy agents, the understanding of the immune response against HER2 tumor cells developed by anti-HER2 antibodies (Abs) is rapidly evolving.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by dream-enactment behaviors that emerge during a loss of REM sleep atonia. In patients with RBD, obstructive sleep apneas syndrome (OSAS) frequently occurs as a comorbid entity. It has been reported that the presence of muscle tone during REM sleep (REM sleep without atonia-RSWA) could play a protective role in patients with OSAS RBD.

The presence of mitral regurgitation (MR) in patients with right ventricular apical pacing can be the result of multiple phenomena. On the one hand, this stimulation causes an asynchronous activation of the left ventricle (LV) and the papillary muscles, leading to a deterioration of the LV ejection fraction and causing an inadequate closure of the valve apparatus. However, there is a wide heterogeneity of ischemic and non-ischemic myocardial conditions that can coexist with mechanical alteration of the LV and the mitral valve leading to or worsening MR in these patients, which can make the etiological determination of valvular regurgitation difficult.

Although natural killer (NK) cells infiltrate clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCC), the most frequent malignancy of the kidney, tumor progression suggests that they become dysfunctional. As ccRCC-driven subversion of NK cell effector functions is usually accompanied by phenotypic changes, analysis of such alterations might lead to the identification of novel biomarkers and/or targets in immuno-oncology. Consequently, we performed a phenotypic analysis of peripheral blood NK cells (PBNK) and tumor-infiltrating NK cells (TINK) from ccRCC patients.

The onset of labor involves the action of multiple factors and recent reports have postulated the endocannabinoid system as a new regulator of this process. Our objective was to study the role of anandamide, one of the main endocannabinoids, on the regulation of placental molecules that contribute to the onset of labor at term. Placental samples were obtained from patients with laboring vaginal deliveries and from non-laboring elective cesarean sections.

Hepatitis C virus and chronic kidney disease are major public health issues all over the world and controversy persists regarding the role of Hepatitis C as a risk factor for the development of chronic kidney disease in the adult general population. Numerous studies found a relationship between positive anti-HCV antibody serologic prevalence and increased frequency of incidence, prevalence and accelerated progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) over time. However, this has not been universally accepted.

Background: Hepatitis B is an important agent of liver disease in patients with chronic kidney disease and chronic HBV infection promotes the development of CKD in the adult general population. Patients with CKD have a suboptimal response to various vaccines, and it remains unclear how we boost the immune response of CKD patients to HB vaccine.
Study Aims And Design: We performed a narrative review to assess the mechanisms of lower immunogenicity of HBV vaccine in CKD population; multiple approaches to improve the response rate of CKD patients to HBV vaccine have been reported.
