Patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome often require mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate gas exchange and to reduce the workload of the respiratory muscles. Although lifesaving, positive pressure mechanical ventilation can potentially injure the lungs and diaphragm, further worsening patient outcomes. While the effect of mechanical ventilation on the risk of developing lung injury is widely appreciated, its potentially deleterious effects on the diaphragm have only recently come to be considered by the broader intensive care unit community.

Pectus excavatum, the most frequent malformation of the chest wall, has been related to cardiac compression and exercise intolerance. Cardiac outcomes after minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum with retrosternal implants, particularly after removal (> 2 years postoperative) are generally unknown. We evaluated stress echocardiography outcomes before repair and after bar removal.

This review aims to gather and disseminate updated information regarding hepatitis A virus (HAV) in Latin America (LA) in the last 11 years, including seroprevalence, post-vaccination studies, virus detection in aqueous matrices and food samples, and outbreak reports. Only 24 seroprevalence studies were published between 2012 and 2023 with 55%-100% reported prevalences of anti-HAV IgG. Among the 25 LA countries, only eight of them have introduced HAV vaccines into their immunisation programs.

The -independent oxacillin non-susceptible (MIONSA) strains represent a great clinical challenge, as they are not easily detected and can lead to treatment failure. However, the responsible molecular mechanisms are still very little understood. Here, we studied four clinical ST8-MSSA- isolates recovered during the course of antibiotic treatment from a patient suffering successive episodes of bacteremia.

Aims: Compared to heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction, HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and HF with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) are increasing in prevalence, yet little is known about the geographic variation in patient characteristics, treatments and outcomes among these two HF phenotypes. The aim of this study was to investigate geographic differences in HFpEF and HFmrEF.
Methods And Results: We conducted an individual patient analysis of five clinical trials enrolling patients with HFpEF or HFmrEF from North America (NA), Latin America (LA), Western Europe (WE), Central/Eastern Europe and Russia (CEER), and Asia-Pacific (AP).

Background: Until 2005, when a single dose of vaccine was implemented in one-year-old children, the Hepatitis A virus (HAV) was responsible for approximately 90% of acute hepatitis cases in the paediatric population in Argentina. However, despite vaccination success, sporadic outbreaks of HAV still occur among adults. This study aimed to assess the seroepidemiology of HAV in Argentina, analysing IgG and IgM antibodies against HAV in a large population, both vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Background: We explored whether the maximum predicted walking distance, assessed with six-minute walk test (6MWT) and reflecting submaximal functional exercise capacity, is decreased among patients with pectus excavatum (PEX).
Methods: This study comprised a retrospective analysis of patients with PEX who underwent a 6MWT for the assessment of functional capacity. The maximum distance walked was recorded and compared to reference values established for different populations, including a young and healthy South American population.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) are abundant in several tumor types and usually correlate with poor prognosis. Previously, we demonstrated that anti-inflammatory macrophages (M2) inhibit NK cell effector functions. Here, we explored the impact of TAM on NK cells in the context of clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC).

Purpose: Urothelial cancer accounts for approximately 3% of new cancer cases worldwide, with a high burden of disease in countries with medium and low human development indexes where its incidence and mortality are increasing. The purpose of this consensus is to develop statements on the evaluation and treatment of locally advanced and metastatic urothelial carcinoma that would further guide the clinical practice in Latin America.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted by an independent team of methodologists.

Anticoagulant treatment, together with antiplatelet therapy, plays an important role in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes. Its use is associated with a reduction in new ischemic events, stent thrombosis, and lower mortality. However, in clinical practice there is great heterogeneity in its use, leading to suboptimal results in treatment.

Sex and gender are often used as synonyms. However, while sex describes only a biological state, gender is a dynamic concept that takes into account psychosocial and cultural aspects of human existence that can change according to place and time. Inequality in medicine has been described in several areas.

Dream-enactment behavior that emerges during episodes of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep without muscle atonia is a parasomnia known as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). RBD constitutes a prodromal marker of α-synucleinopathies and serves as one of the best biomarkers available to predict diseases such as Parkinson disease, multiple system atrophy and dementia with Lewy bodies. Most patients showing RBD will convert to an α-synucleinopathy about 10 years after diagnosis.

Adaptive NK cells constitute an NK cell subpopulation, which expands after human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. This subpopulation has stronger production of cytokines after CD16 stimulation, longer life and persistence than conventional NK cells and are, therefore, interesting tools for cancer immunotherapy. Since there is limited information on adaptive NK cells in cancer patients, we described this population phenotypically and functionally, by flow cytometry, in the context of HER2 + breast cancer (BC) directed therapy.

Around 20% of breast cancers are associated with amplification or overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). In this setting, anti-HER2-targeted agents are the cornerstone of cancer therapeutic strategies. This includes monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and, recently, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).
