The cafeteria diet (CAF) is a superior diet model in animal experiments compared with the conventional high-fat diet (HFD), effectively inducing obesity, metabolic disturbances, and multi-organ damage. Nevertheless, its impact on gut microbiota composition during the progression of obesity, along with its repercussions on the enteric nervous system (ENS) and gastrointestinal motility has not been completely elucidated. To gain more insight into the effects of CAF diet in the gut, C57BL/6 mice were fed with CAF or a standard diet for 2 or 8 wk.

The role of P2X ionotropic receptors in the behavior of purinergic signaling on pathophysiological processes has been widely studied. In recent years, the important participation of P2X receptors in physiological and pathological processes, such as energy metabolism, characteristic inflammatory responses of the immune system, and nociceptive activity in response to pain stimuli, has been noted. Here, we explore the molecular characteristics of the P2X receptors and the use of the different agonist and antagonist agents recently described, focusing on their potential as new therapeutic targets in the treatment of diseases with emphasis on obesity, diabetes, and some of the complications derived from these pathologies.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (H&NSCC) is an anatomic, biological, and genetic complex disease. It involves more than 1000 genes implied in its oncogenesis; for this review, we limit our search and description to the genes implied in the onco-ontogeny of the derivates from the first pharyngeal arch during embryo development. They can be grouped as transcription factors and signaling molecules (that act as growth factors that bind to receptors).

Introduction: Because Genomic selection (GS) is a predictive methodology, it needs to guarantee high-prediction accuracies for practical implementations. However, since many factors affect the prediction performance of this methodology, its practical implementation still needs to be improved in many breeding programs. For this reason, many strategies have been explored to improve the prediction performance of this methodology.

Marine environments harbor a plethora of microorganisms that represent a valuable source of new biomolecules of biotechnological interest. In particular, enzymes from marine bacteria exhibit unique properties due to their high catalytic activity under various stressful and fluctuating conditions, such as temperature, pH, and salinity, fluctuations which are common during several industrial processes. In this study, we report a new esterase (EstGoM) from a marine Pseudomonas sp.

Circadian rhythms synchronize to light through the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT), which is a bundle of axons coming from melanopsin retinal ganglion cells, whose synaptic terminals release glutamate to the ventral suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Activation of AMPA-kainate and NMDA postsynaptic receptors elicits the increase in intracellular calcium required for triggering the signaling cascade that ends in phase shifts. During aging, there is a decline in the synchronization of circadian rhythms to light.

Intestinal low-grade inflammation induced by a high-fat diet has been found to detonate chronic systemic inflammation, which is a hallmark of obesity, and precede the apparition of insulin resistance, a key factor for developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Aberrant purinergic signaling pathways have been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal diseases. However, their role in the gut inflammation associated with obesity and T2D remains unexplored.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression is associated with dysfunctional mitochondria and bioenergetics impairment. However, no data about the relationship between mitochondrial supercomplexes (hmwSC) formation and ATP production rates in HCC are available. Our group has developed an adenosine derivative, IFC-305, which improves mitochondrial function, and it has been proposed as a therapeutic candidate for HCC.

A poorly studied issue in women with breast cancer is the role of incretins (GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1)) in the quantity and quality of muscle mass in lean and obese individuals. The current report aims to analyze the patterns of association and the role of incretin in muscle functionality and body composition in women with cancer compared with healthy women (mammography BI-RADS I or II) to elucidate whether GIP and GLP-1 can be used to estimate the risk, in conjunction with overweight or obesity, for breast cancer. We designed a case-control study in women with a breast cancer diagnosis confirmed by biopsy in different clinical stages (CS; n = 87) and healthy women with a mastography BI-RADS I or II within the last year (n = 69).

CD4 T lymphocytes have been classified into several lineages, according to their gene expression profiles and their effector responses. Interestingly, recent evidence is showing that many lineages could yield hybrid phenotypes with unique properties and functions. It has been reported that such hybrid lineages might underlie pathologies or may function as effector cells with protection capacities against molecular threats.
