Stroke is the third cause of death worldwide and a health problem, and current therapy continues to be very poor. It promotes an alteration associated with excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory processes, exacerbating the damage in the brain. Although cortical areas are the most affected by stroke, the hippocampus can be impacted in the long term through the pathways it connects with these areas, which are associated further with motor alterations; this encourages the search for new therapeutic approaches.

Departamento de Apicultura Tropical, Campus de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, Mérida, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, but their nonlethal effects on tropical insects, especially stingless bees, haven't been fully studied.
  • This study is the first to look at how sublethal heat stress during development affects the size, shape, immune responses, and lifespans of different castes (workers, gynes, males) in stingless bees.
  • Results showed that heat-stressed individuals were smaller and had reduced immune responses, particularly males; heat stress also led to earlier foraging and shorter lifespans in workers, raising concerns about colony fitness and the future of stingless bee species.

Prediabetes and CKD: Does a causal relationship exist.

Nefrologia (Engl Ed)

November 2024

Servicio de Nefrología Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde, Universidad de Guadalajara, Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud, Guadalajara, Mexico. Electronic address:

The relationship between diabetes and the development of kidney complications is well known, but the understanding of prediabetes and insulin resistance with impaired kidney function has been scarcely assessed. Various factors could explain this phenomenon, from the lack of standardization in the definitions of prediabetes, to the erratic and inconsistent evidence in large-scale epidemiological and cohort studies. It seems that the pathophysiological pathway of prediabetes could be related to inflammation and neurohormonal hyperactivation, factors present even before the onset of diabetes, which might be the main drivers of glomerular hyperfiltration, albuminuria, and impaired glomerular filtration rate.

: Some vascular alterations such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or arterial stiffness can alter perfusion of the limbs, so we wondered if this is reflected in the temperature of the soles of the feet of diabetic patients who did not have a diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease. Foot sole temperature was correlated with the ankle-brachial index (ABI), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and arterial age. A total of 175 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, without a previous diagnosis of PAD, were recruited.

Inverse Shifting-PCR Modified by Capillary Electrophoresis for Detecting F8 and Inversions in Severe Hemophilia A Patients and Probable Carriers.

Life (Basel)

October 2024

División de Genética, Centro de Investigación Biomédica de Occidente, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Guadalajara 44340, Jalisco, Mexico.

Globally, intron 22 inversions (Inv22s) of the factor VIII gene (F8) are the most frequent pathogenic variants and account for 45-50% of severe hemophilia A (SHA) cases, while intron 1 inversion (Inv1) explains 1-5% of SHA cases. The detection of both inversions by an inverse shifting-polymerase chain reaction (IS-PCR) is the first choice worldwide for the diagnosis of patients and carriers of SHA. To improve its sensitivity and reproducibility in the visualization of PCR products, we approached the IS-PCR with fluorescent capillary electrophoresis instead of agarose electrophoresis.
