Introduction: Microcytic anemias are very common in clinical practice, with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and thalassemia minor (TT) being the most prevalent. Diagnostic confirmation of these clinical entities requires tests involving iron metabolism profile, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and molecular analysis. In this context, several discriminant indices have been proposed to simplify the differential diagnosis between IDA and TM.

We addressed the involvement of the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in the impairment of the cellular cholesterol efflux elicited by glycated albumin. Albumin was isolated from type 1 (DM1) and type 2 (DM2) diabetes mellitus (HbA1c > 9%) and non-DM subjects (C). Moreover, albumin was glycated in vitro (AGE-albumin).

Introduction: Lumbar pain is one of the main reasons for medical consultation, causing the disruption of daily routines due to its disabling nature, thus resulting in social and personal damage. Among the complementary treatments, ozonotherapy offers analgesia to most patients, with reports of complications. However, great questions about its clinical effectiveness have not been answered yet, and there have been reports of serious complications.

Background And Aims: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is associated with lipid derangements that worsen kidney function and enhance cardiovascular (CVD) risk. The management of dyslipidemia, hypertension and other traditional risk factors does not completely prevent CVD complications, bringing up the participation of nontraditional risk factors such as advanced glycation end products (AGEs), carbamoylation and changes in the HDL proteome and functionality. The HDL composition, proteome, chemical modification and functionality were analyzed in nondialysis subjects with DKD categorized according to the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin excretion rate (AER).

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the central nervous system and, despite the standard therapy; the patients' prognoses remain dismal. The miRNA expression profiles have been associated with patient prognosis, suggesting that they may be helpful for tumor diagnosis and classification as well as predictive of tumor response to treatment. We described the microRNA expression profile of 29 primary GBM samples (9 pediatric GBMs) and 11 non-neoplastic white matter samples as controls (WM) by microarray analysis and we performed functional in vitro assays on these 2 most differentially expressed miRNAs.

The objective of this work was to perform the phytochemical characterization, to determine total phenols, antioxidant (AAO%) and antimicrobial potential of the ethanolic extracts of carambola. The phytochemical study was carried out through a qualitative analysis of the chemical constituents and quantitative determination of the phenol content By the Folin-Ciocalteu test. Qualitative and quantitative antioxidant tests were performed using the DPPH method (2,2 diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazila) and iron reduction (FRAP).

The trematodes have developed several adaptations and strategies to complete their life cycle in the intermediate host, without even reaching the definitive host. Thus, metacercariae through progeny can produce viable eggs by self-fertilization in the second intermediate host. We analyzed 30 specimens of Rhamdia quelen Quoy & Gaimard 1824 (Siluriformes, Heptapteridae) collected in the Jacaré-Pepira River, Ibitinga.

Domestic and wild goats are very susceptible animals to predation, specially when pregnancy occurs. This study aimed to evaluate the use of goat fetal ovarian tissue for vitrification followed by xenotransplantation and fresh xenotransplantation in two immunosuppressed mice models (C57BL/6 SCID and Balb-C NUDE). Goat fetus ovaries were collected in slaughterhouses, divided into small cortical pieces and were destined for fresh xenotransplantation (FX) and cryopreservation followed by xenotransplantation (CX).

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 virus causes COVID-19, and it is responsible for the largest pandemic since the 1918 H1N1 influenza outbreak. The classic symptoms of the disease have been well defined by the World Health Organization; however, olfactory/gustatory disorders have been reported in some studies, but there are still several missing points in the understanding and in the consensus about the clinical management of these cases.
Objective: To identify evidence in the scientific literature about olfactory/gustatory disorders, their clinical presentation, prevalence and possible specific treatments associated with COVID-19.

A new species of Creptotrematina Yamaguti, 1954 was collected from characid fishes, Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) and Astyanax lacustris Lucerna & Soares, 2016 from the Batalha River in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The new species most closely resembles Creptotrematina aguirrepequenoi, but differs by the elongated shape of vitelline follicles, the extension of these follicles in the posterior end of body and the fact that they are not confluent. The morphological differences were confirmed through molecular data.

Assessment of central blood pressure (BP), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and augmentation index (AIx) measurements may improve cardiovascular risk stratification. This study aimed to establish reference office values for central BP, PWV, and AIx by means of a Mobil-O-Graph PWA monitor and to evaluate the impact of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) on these measurements. We cross-sectionally evaluated clinical characteristics, central BP, PWV, AIx, and peripheral BP measurements among 867 apparently healthy individuals (age = 46.
