Biodiversity gaps in microorganisms, such as yeasts, blur our understanding of microbial diversity, introducing biases in their biogeography, ecology, and taxonomy. The genus Carlosrosaea is a potential plant growth booster, yet it is still a little-known yeast group. Considering that databases like GBIF and GenBank are powerful tools for exploring biodiversity data, we aimed to map the geographic distribution, ecological patterns, and taxonomic potential of the genus Carlosrosaea.

Objective: Sublingual varicose veins are variations of normality that appear more prominent during aging. The systematic review aim to investigate sublingual varicose veins frequency in patients exposed to systemic and environmental exposed factors linked to cardiovascular diseases.

Methods: This systematic review was based on the PECO strategy, and the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase and Grey Literature library were searched for publications examining the association between sublingual varicose veins and systemic and environmental exposed factors linked to cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and leg varices.

Article Synopsis
  • - Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that leads to a strong urge to move the legs, impacting the quality of life for many hemodialysis patients; this review focuses on exploring exercise as a treatment option.
  • - An analysis of eight studies found that aerobic and stretching exercises significantly reduced RLS severity and improved related issues like sleep quality and depression among hemodialysis patients over durations of eight weeks to six months.
  • - The findings suggest that exercise can be an effective non-pharmacological approach to managing RLS, potentially serving as an alternative or complement to dopamine agonists (DAs), which have side effects despite improving sleep quality.

Objective: Interarm systolic blood pressure difference (IASD) values >15 mmHg (IASD > 15) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This report evaluated whether IASD >15, assessed by different protocols [sequential or simultaneous; based on one or several blood pressure (BP) readings], was associated with adverse left ventricular (LV) remodeling.

Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 605 individuals who underwent clinical and echocardiography evaluation and three pairs of simultaneous arm BP readings.

Braz J Med Biol Res

August 2024

Laboratório de Ciências Aplicadas ao Esporte, Instituto de Educação Física e Esporte, Universidade Federal de Alagoas, Maceió, AL, Brasil.

The aim was to investigate the long-term effects of metformin ingestion on high-intensity interval training on performance, glycogen concentration (GC), GLUT-4 content, and metabolomics outcomes in rats. Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into baseline, metformin (500 mg daily), and control groups. Training consisted of 4 sets of 10 jumps with 30 s of passive recovery per day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks.

The Welfare of Horses Competing in Three-Barrel Race Events Is Shown to Be Not Inhibited by Short Intervals between Starts.

Animals (Basel)

February 2024

Núcleo de Pesquisa Equina, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE), Recife 52171-900, PE, Brazil.

Equestrian sports require precise animal welfare and health evaluations. To test the hypothesis that horses maintain their welfare when subjected to two three-barrel (3TB) races with 2 min intervals, an experiment was designed to evaluate their surface temperature using infrared thermography (IRT) in regions of interest (barrel, flank, neck, jaw, corner of the mouth, and ocular caruncle) and also measure blood biomarkers (hemogram, total plasma protein, fibrinogen, urea, creatinine, GGT, CK, cortisol, IL-6, and IL-1β). Ten Quarter Horses were monitored through thermography (pre-race, +1, +4, and +24 h post-race) and blood sampling (pre-race, +1, +4, and +24 h post-race).
