Aims: To evaluate the effect of cultivation (anaerobiosis vs respiration) and Tween 80 supplementation on the production of metabolites and on the composition of membrane fatty acids (FAs) in Lactobacillus casei N87.

Methods And Results: Anaerobic and respiratory growth, with or without Tween 80 supplementation, was carried out in a chemically defined medium. Production of biomass, organic acids, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), consumption of amino acids and changes in membrane FAs were investigated.

Synthetic stoichiometric and Fe-doped geomimetic chrysotile nanocrystals represent a reference standard to investigate the health hazard associated with mineral asbestos fibres. Experimental evidence suggests that the generation of reactive oxygen species and other radicals, catalysed by iron ions at the fibre surface, plays an important role in asbestos-induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. In this study, structural modification of bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorbed onto synthetic chrysotile doped with different amounts of Fe has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and analytical pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Comb polyelectrolytes (CPs) having neutral hydrophilic teeth, similar to double hydrophilic block copolymers, are a powerful tool to modify the chemical-physical properties of inorganic crystalline materials. One of their main applications is in concrete technology, where they work as superplasticizers, particle-dispersing agents. Here, CPs, having the same poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) backbone chain and differing in the grafting with methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) chains (MPEG) of two molecular weights, were used to investigate the influence of tooth chains in polymer aggregation and in control on morphology and aggregation of calcite particles.

Mineralized tissues grow through biologically controlled processes in which specific macromolecules are involved. Some of these molecules, which are present in very low concentrations and are difficult to localize and characterize, become entrapped inside the mineralized tissue. Herein, a protein fragment, GP, which was obtained by the alkaline digestion of the green sheet of the abalone shell, is used as a probe to study the changes in molecular structure that occur during the precipitation of calcium carbonate.
