Background And Aims: End-stage liver disease (ESLD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, comparable to a large extent to other organ insufficiencies. The need for palliative care (PC) in patients with ESLD is high. In Portugal, in the only identified study, more than 80% of patients hospitalized with ESLD had criteria for PC.

Article Synopsis
  • T-cell development creates a variety of T-cell receptors (TCRs) that identify different antigens, and glycosylation is a crucial modification that influences T-cell functions.
  • The study found specific glycome changes during T-cell development in both humans and mice, and manipulating N-glycosylation caused issues in crucial developmental stages and increased disease susceptibility.
  • Overall, the research highlights how abnormal glycosylation, particularly with mannosylated thymocytes, disrupts T-cell development and links to higher inflammation risk.

  • Musculoskeletal conditions are the top cause of disability globally, and telerehabilitation could enhance access to treatment and improve patient compliance.
  • This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of exercise-based asynchronous biofeedback-assisted telerehabilitation on pain and function in adults with musculoskeletal issues, analyzing studies published between January 2017 and August 2022.
  • Findings showed that motion tracker-assisted telerehabilitation led to moderate improvements in pain and function, while camera-based approaches were less effective; overall, asynchronous telerehabilitation shows promise as a management option for these conditions.

Acute rupture of the plantar fascia is a rare but potentially debilitating injury in athletes, particularly those involved in running and jumping sports. Early recognition and prompt treatment are crucial for a successful recovery and return to play. Conservative treatment, including rest, immobilization, and physical therapy, may be effective in most cases, while surgical intervention may be required in those that are nonresponsive to conservative treatment.

Cyanoacrylate injection is widely used to treat hemorrhagic gastric varices. A pulmonary glue embolism is an unusual but potentially fatal complication. We present a case of a 51-year-old man with a history of alcoholic hepatic cirrhosis Child-Pugh B, who had an acute pulmonary embolism with sudden cardiorespiratory collapse due to biological glue injection used for the emergent repair of bleeding gastric varices.

is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium and has its natural reservoir in pigs. Infection by this microorganism usually manifests in humans as meningitis, endocarditis, sepsis, and/or arthritis after contact with pigs or pork. Meningitis is a very common manifestation and may be considered its second most common cause.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the evidence on inflammatory biomarkers as analytic predictors of non-specific low back pain (NsLBP). Low back pain (LBP) is the number one cause of disability globally, posing a major health problem that causes an enormous social and economic burden, and there is an increasing interest on the importance of biomarkers in quantifying and even emerge as potential therapeutic tools to LBP.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted on July 2022 in Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and Web of Science for all the available literature.

Background: Vascular calcification is an ever-more-common finding in protocoled pre-transplant imaging in living kidney donors. We intended to explore whether a connection could be found between the Agatston calcification score, prior to kidney donation, and post-donation renal function.

Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 156 living kidney donors who underwent living donor nephrectomy between January 2010 and December 2016.

Background: Major advances have been seen in techniques and devices for performing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs), but there are limited real-world practice data from developing countries.

Objectives: To report clinical and angiographic characteristics, procedural aspects, and clinical outcomes of CTO PCI performed at dedicated centers in Brazil.

Methods: Included patients underwent CTO PCI at centers participating in the LATAM CTO Registry, a Latin American multicenter registry dedicated to prospective collection of these data.

Introduction And Objectives: Acute total occlusion of the unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) is a dramatic event. There are limited data regarding this population. We aimed to describe the clinical presentation and outcomes of patients and to determine predictors of in-hospital mortality.

Introduction: Perinatal asphyxia is one of the most frequent causes of neonatal mortality, affecting approximately four million newborns worldwide each year and causing the death of one million individuals. One of the main reasons for these high incidences is the lack of consensual methods of early diagnosis for this pathology. Estimating risk-appropriate health care for mother and baby is essential for increasing the quality of the health care system.

Subglottic stenosis balloon dilation in selected patients may be an option for the treatment of acquired subglottic stenosis, reducing the need for open surgical approaches or tracheostomy. This treatment is a major challenge to otolaryngologists and anesthesiologists, with an interactive collaboration being critical throughout the procedure. When performed, it is fundamental that otolaryngologists and anesthesiologists communicate properly during the procedure to achieve acceptable results.

Autoimmune diseases are life-threatening disorders that cause increasing disability over time. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other autoimmune diseases arise when immune stimuli override mechanisms of self-tolerance. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that protein glycosylation is substantially altered in autoimmune disease development, but the mechanisms by which glycans trigger these autoreactive immune responses are still largely unclear.

Atrial fibrillation as a new prognosis factor in chronic patients after hospitalization: the CHRONIBERIA index.

Sci Rep

March 2023

Internal Medicine Department, Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago de Compostela y Barbanza, School of Medicine, University of Santiago de Compostela, Rua da Choupana S/N, 15706, Santiago de Compostela. A Coruña, Spain.

A collaborative project in different areas of Spain and Portugal was designed to find out the variables that influence the mortality after discharge and develop a prognostic model adapted to the current healthcare needs of chronic patients in an internal medicine ward. Inclusion criteria were being admitted to an Internal Medicine department and at least one chronic disease. Patients' physical dependence was measured through Barthel index (BI).

This case presents a minimal invasive alternative for the treatment of subhyaloid hemorrhages. Young, female, 32 years old, with no regular medication and with no personal or ophthalmological history, reports a sudden and profound decrease in visual acuity after an episode of vomiting, with 2 days of evolution. After funduscopic observation and complementary diagnostic tests, subhyaloid hemorrhage was detected and laser hyaloidotomy was performed, with restoration of visual acuity after 1 week.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

February 2023

Instituto de Saúde Ambiental (ISAMB), Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, 1649-028 Lisbon, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2020, breast cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women globally and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in OECD countries.
  • The study in Portugal aimed to gather patient-reported outcomes and experiences of 378 women with breast cancer, highlighting the quality of care beyond traditional metrics like mortality and incidence.
  • Results indicated high satisfaction with treatment outcomes, but lower overall well-being scores compared to the general population, demonstrating the importance of measuring patient-reported metrics in cancer care in Portugal.

Background: Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the number one cause of disability worldwide. Digital care programs (DCPs) for MSK pain management have arisen as alternative care delivery models to circumvent challenges in accessibility of conventional therapy. Despite the potential of DCPs to reduce inequities in accessing care, the outcomes of such interventions in rural and urban populations have yet to be studied.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective review of registered surgical data from patients that undergone uncomplicated cataract surgery in a single centre, with randomly assigned femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) to one eye and conventional phacoemulsification (CP) to the other, was performed. The recorded pupil images were evaluated at pre and post laser treatment (after suction release) and at several surgical timepoints for both techniques (FLACS and CP).
