Objective: To evaluate the risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) after a non-curative (NC) gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and to validate and eventually refine the eCura scoring system in the Western setting. Also, to assess the rate and risk factors for parietal residual disease.
Design: Retrospective multicentre multinational study of prospectively collected registries from 19 Western centres.

Introduction: Remote monitoring (RM) is a safe and effective alternative to in-office conventional follow-up.
Objective: We aimed to evaluate patient satisfaction with RM and its impact on healthcare resources in a population with cardiac implantable electronic devices.
Methods: Randomized, pragmatic, open-label controlled trial, with adult wearers of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy with ICD (CRT-D), eligible for the CareLink® system.
Introduction: The demographic and professional characteristics of specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology registered in Portugal are presented and current and future needs assessed.
Material And Methods: An analysis of the data from Instituto Nacional de Estatística, Ordem dos Médicos and a survey sent to the directors of the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Portuguese hospitals was perfomed. In order to calculate the necessary number of specialists, established indicators of the activity of the specialty were used.

Numerous studies suggest a relationship between depression and metabolic syndrome, which is likely influenced by age. Interestingly, functional imaging analysis has shown an association between functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN-FC) and components of metabolic syndrome, which is explored in this study. From a larger longitudinal cohort study on healthy aging, 943 individuals were extensively characterized for mood and cognition.

Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract, having one of the highest recurrence rates and progression from non-muscle to muscle invasive bladder cancer that commonly leads to metastasis. Cystoscopy and urine cytology are the standard procedures for its detection but have limited clinical sensitivity and specificity. Herein, a microfluidic device, the UriChip, was developed for the enrichment of urothelial exfoliated cells from fresh and frozen urine, based on deformability and size, and the cancer-associated glycan Sialyl-Tn explored as a putative bladder cancer urinary biomarker.

Although skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) are the most common focal infections associated with invasive disease caused by (Lancefield Group A streptococci - GAS), there is scarce information on the characteristics of isolates recovered from SSTI in temperate-climate regions. In this study, 320 GAS isolated from SSTI in Portugal were characterized by multiple typing methods and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and SpeB activity. The and genes of isolates with no detectable SpeB activity were sequenced.

Ultrasound has increasingly growing applications in anesthesia. This procedure has proven to be a novel, non-invasive and simple technique for the upper airway management, proving to be a useful tool, not only in the operating room but also in the intensive care unit and emergency department. Indeed, over the years mounting evidence has showed an increasing role of ultrasound in airway management.

Osteochondral lesions are frequent and important causes of pain and disability. These lesions are induced by traumatic injuries or by diseases that affect both the cartilage surface and the subchondral bone. Due to the limited cartilage ability to regenerate and self-repair, these lesions tend to gradually worsen and progress towards osteoarthritis.

Introduction And Aims: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is considered one of the preferred routes for long-term enteral feeding. However, early mortality after PEG placement is high. We aimed at analyzing overall and early mortality in patients who underwent PEG insertion and at identifying risk factors of increased mortality after the procedure.

Unlabelled: Pompe disease is a rare autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder caused by acid α-glucosidase enzyme (GAA) deficiency and divided into two distinct variants, infantile- and late-onset. The late-onset variant is characterized by a spectrum of phenotypic variation that may range from asymptomatic, to reduced muscle strength and/or diaphragmatic paralysis. Since muscle strength loss is characteristic of several different conditions, which may also cause diaphragmatic paralysis, a protocol was created to search for the diagnosis of Pompe disease and exclude other possible causes.

Introduction: In Portugal there are still no epidemiological and demographic studies conducted in patients with of the head and neck tumors. The objectives of this analysis are to describe the epidemiological and demographics of patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat department of an oncology center in the North of Portugal and also assess the impact of these characteristics on survival.
Material And Methods: Retrospective study of patients referred between January 2011 and December 2013 to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of an oncology center (Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto),.

Introduction: The establishment of prognostic models for Crohn's disease [CD] is highly desirable, as they have the potential to guide physicians in the decision-making process concerning therapeutic choices, thus improving patients' health and quality of life. Our aim was to derive models for disabling CD and reoperation based solely on clinical/demographic data.
Methods: A multicentric and retrospectively enrolled cohort of CD patients, subject to early surgery or immunosuppression, was analysed in order to build Bayesian network models and risk matrices.

Since 2010 the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) replaced the 7-valent vaccine (PCV7) as the leading pneumococcal vaccine used in children through the private sector. Although, neither of the PCVs were used significantly in adults, changes in adult invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) were expected due to herd protection. We characterized = 1163 isolates recovered from IPD in adults in 2012-2014 with the goal of documenting possible changes in serotype prevalence and antimicrobial resistance.

Background And Aims: Crohn's disease (CD) is typically diagnosed with ileocolonoscopy (IC); however, when inflammation is localized solely in the small bowel, visualization of the entire small-bowel mucosa can be challenging. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic yield of a pan-enteric video capsule endoscope (small-bowel colon [SBC] capsule) versus IC in patients with active CD.
Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter study.

Adult height, weight, and adiposity measures have been suggested by some studies to be predictors of depression, cognitive impairment, and dementia. However, the presence of confounding factors and the lack of a thorough neuropsychological evaluation in many of these studies have precluded a definitive conclusion about the influence of anthropometric measures in cognition and depression. In this study we aimed to assess the value of height, weight, and abdominal perimeter to predict cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms in aged individuals.

Background And Study Aims: One of the indications for capsule endoscopy (CE) is the detection of proximal small bowel (SB) involvement in Crohn's disease (CD) patients. Our aim was to assess clinical, laboratory and endoscopic predictors associated with proximal SB involvement in CD patients submitted to CE.
Patients And Methods: Retrospective multicenter study in which Lewis score (LS) was systematically determined in 190 CE of patients diagnosed with CD between 2003 and 2014.

Background: Goodpasture's syndrome, a rare disease, is an organ-specific autoimmune disease mediated by anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies. Its pathology is characterized by crescentic glomerulonephritis with linear immunofluorescent staining for immunoglobulin G on the glomerular basement membrane. Although rare, a few cases with absence of circulating anti-glomerular membrane antibodies have been described.

Background: Device-assisted enteroscopies (DAEs) are recent endoscopic techniques that enable direct endoscopic small-bowel evaluation.
Objective: The objective of this article is to evaluate the implementation of DAEs in Portugal and assess the main indications, diagnoses, diagnostic yield, therapeutic yield and complication rate.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective series using a national Web-based survey on behalf of the Portuguese Small-Bowel Study Group.
