Patient safety in health care is the cornerstone of quality in nursing care. It is a duty of nurses and an objective of the health organizations. This article aims to analyze the scientific evidence on the nurses' perception and opinion on patient safety in the emergency department.

Frequency of Depressive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Depressive disorders are recognized as a common neuropsychiatric disorder of Parkinson's disease (PD). Reported frequencies vary widely among studies and depend on the diagnostic criteria, the methods of ascertainment used, and the population sampled.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the frequency of depressive disorders in PD and to investigate the relationship with PD clinical variables.

Distinct gait dimensions are modulated by physical activity in Parkinson's disease patients.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurodegenerative disease, but disease-modifying or preventive treatments are lacking. Physical activity is a modifiable factor that decreases the PD risk and improves motor symptoms in PD. Understanding which dimensions of gait performance correlate with physical activity in PD can have important pathophysiological and therapeutic implications.

Translation and Validation of the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS-CA-5) for Portuguese Children and Adolescents.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to translate and validate into European Portuguese the CAPS-CA-5 (Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for Children and Adolescents), a semi-structured scale for the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder in children and adolescents, according to the DSM-5 criteria.

Material And Methods: This study was developed in three stages. In the first stage, the translation and back-translation of CAPS-CA-5 into European Portuguese was carried out.

Development of a Checklist of Potentially Traumatic Events in Children and Adolescents (CEPT-CA).

Introduction: Since exposure to potentially traumatic events during childhood and adolescence has been shown to be very common, its screening is very important. Our aim was to develop a self-assessment checklist to perform screening of potentially traumatic events in childhood and adolescence.

Methods: The development of the Checklist of Potentially Traumatic Events in Children and Adolescents (CEPT-CA) was based on: (a) the structure of Life Events Checklist that has been translated, back-translated, and adapted; (b) recommendations of renowned entities about trauma in childhood; (c) particularities of potentially traumatic events in childhood; (d) adapting the language to the target population's age group; (e) Portugal's sociocultural context.

Outcomes and Learning Curve in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection of Rectal Neoplasms with Severe Fibrosis: Experience of a Western Center.

Introduction: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) of lesions with severe submucosal fibrosis has been associated with worse outcomes, such as lower curative resection rate and higher incidence of adverse events. This study aims to investigate its true impact on rectal ESD performed in the West and to assess predictive factors of severe fibrosis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study including all rectal ESDs performed at our tertiary center from January 2013 to January 2021.

Impact of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) Low Status in Response to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Early Breast Cancer.

Introduction In clinical practice, there is a binary distinction between human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive and HER2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer (BC). However, within HER2- disease, there is significant heterogeneity. Particularly, HER2- tumors that express some level of HER2 by immunohistochemistry (IHC) score 1+ or 2+/in situ hybridization (ISH) non-amplified are currently defined as HER2-low.

Immunohistochemistry Applied to Breast Cytological Material.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNABs) of the breast are minimally invasive procedures enabling the diagnosis of suspicious breast lesions. Unfortunately, they are often perceived as inferior to core-needle biopsies, namely because they are supposedly unable to differentiate between high-grade ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma or provide material for ancillary testing. Several studies have shown, however, that FNAB samples, when handled properly, are indeed capable of providing sufficient and adequate material for ancillary testing, namely immunocytochemistry (ICC).

Malignancy risk of thyroid nodules: quality assessment of the thyroid ultrasound report.

Background: Thyroid nodules are a challenge in clinical practice and thyroid ultrasonography is essential for assessing the risk of malignancy. The use of ultrasound-based malignancy risk classification systems has been recommended by several scientific societies but radiologist's adherence to these guidelines may vary. The authors aimed to analyze the quality of the information provided by the thyroid ultrasound report, to assess the malignancy risk of thyroid nodules, in Portugal.

Background Inflammation is a crucial component in carcinogenesis. The neutrophil-to-eosinophil ratio (NER) has been studied as a biomarker of prognosis and predictive of response in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). In the present study, we evaluated the relevance of baseline NER on the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) outcomes in real-world patients with mRCC treated with nivolumab in second or subsequent lines.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Breast Cancer Management in Portugal: A Cross-Sectional Survey-Based Study of Medical Oncologists.

Introduction: Cancer care providers have faced many challenges in delivering safe care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional survey-based study investigated the impact of the pandemic on clinical practices of Portuguese medical oncologists caring for patients with breast cancer.

Methods: An anonymous online survey comprising 42 questions gathered information regarding COVID-19 testing, treatment in (neo)adjuvant and metastatic settings, and other aspects of breast cancer management.

Transient neonatal hypocalcaemia caused by maternal hyperparathyroidism.

Hypocalcaemia in neonates can range from asymptomatic to a potentially life-threatening condition. We present a case of a 36 weeks gestational age boy, admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit for jitteriness, mild hypotonia and breastfeeding difficulties. By the ninth day of life, he presented with late-onset hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia, low 25-OH-vitamin D and inappropriately normal parathyroid hormone.

Spinal Cord Compression Secondary to Benign Metastasizing Leiomyoma.

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma is an extremely rare disease characterized by the presence of extrauterine spread of smooth muscle cells with histological, molecular, and immunological patterns similar to those of benign uterine leiomyomas. Benign metastasizing leiomyoma is often asymptomatic, and it presents as an incidental radiology finding of well-defined multiple pulmonary nodules with varying sizes. It is more frequent in premenopausal women, and a previous history of uterine leiomyomas resected in the past is found in most of the cases.

Clenbuterol-induced myocarditis in a young man desiring to lose weight.

A young man in his late 20s was presented with acute chest pain, concave ST elevation in lateral and inferior leads on ECG and elevated cardiac troponin. A thorough clinical history was notable for clenbuterol abuse. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a small area of hypokinesia in the inferior wall and cardiac magnetic resonance supported the diagnosis of acute myocarditis revealing signs of myocardial oedema and subepicardial delayed enhancement.

Validation of DIGIROP models and decision support tool for prediction of treatment for retinopathy of prematurity on a contemporary Swedish cohort.

Background/aims: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is currently diagnosed through repeated eye examinations to find the low percentage of infants that fulfil treatment criteria to reduce vision loss. A prediction model for severe ROP requiring treatment that might sensitively and specifically identify infants that develop severe ROP, DIGIROP-Birth, was developed using birth characteristics. DIGIROP-Screen additionally incorporates first signs of ROP in different models over time.

Intracardiac versus extracardiac shunt in a young man with ischaemic stroke.

A 24-year-old man with a history of recent ischaemic stroke was diagnosed with patent foramen ovale (PFO) and referred for closure at our hospital. At admission, besides low peripheral oxygen saturation (88%), physical examination was otherwise normal. We performed intraprocedural transoesophageal echocardiogram that revealed no PFO, although agitated saline injection demonstrated bubbles lately on the left atrium.
