Clinical leadership in nursing students: A concept analysis.

Objectives: To undertake a concept analysis of clinical leadership in nursing students.

Design: Concept analysis.

Data Sources: A comprehensive search was conducted using the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline and PsychINFO using the following search terms: clinical leadership AND management AND preregistration OR pre-registration OR undergraduate AND nursing student* OR student nurse*.

Reinnervation as measured by the motor unit size index is associated with preservation of muscle strength in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but not all muscles reinnervate.

Introduction/aims: The motor unit size index (MUSIX) may provide insight into reinnervation patterns in diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, it is not known whether MUSIX detects clinically relevant changes in reinnervation, or if all muscles manifest changes in MUSIX in response to reinnervation after motor unit loss.

Methods: Fifty-seven patients with ALS were assessed at 3-month intervals for 12 months in four centers.

Bioprosthetic Aortic Valve Degeneration: a Review from a Basic Science Perspective.

Introduction: The increase in the prevalence of aortic stenosis due to an aging population has led to an increasing number of surgical aortic valve replacements. Over the past 20 years, there has been a major shift in preference from mechanical to bioprosthetic valves. However, despite efforts, there is still no "ideal" bioprosthesis.

Predictors of Burnout Among Physicians: Evidence From a National Study in Portugal.

The aims of this research on burnout among physicians were threefold, (1) to characterize the burnout symptoms' prevalence among Portuguese physicians, (2) to test the hypothesis that organizational demands and resources add, on top of other factors, to the explanatory level of burnout; and (3) to explore the predictors of organizational demands and resources. Data collection was conducted online at the national level in Portugal, with 9,176 complete replies and a response rate of 21%. Predictors stemming from theoretical models of an intra-individual, occupational, organizational, and socio-psychological nature were measured using an online/paper survey.

Determinants of the Use of Health and Fitness Mobile Apps by Patients With Asthma: Secondary Analysis of Observational Studies.

Background: Health and fitness apps have potential benefits to improve self-management and disease control among patients with asthma. However, inconsistent use rates have been reported across studies, regions, and health systems. A better understanding of the characteristics of users and nonusers is critical to design solutions that are effectively integrated in patients' daily lives, and to ensure that these equitably reach out to different groups of patients, thus improving rather than entrenching health inequities.

The Role of Vascular Lesions in Diabetes Across a Spectrum of Clinical Kidney Disease.

Introduction: The clinical-histologic correlation in diabetic nephropathy is not completely known.

Methods: We analyzed nephrectomy specimens from 90 patients with diabetes and diverse degrees of proteinuria and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

Results: Thirty-six (40%) subjects had normoalbuminuria, 33 (37%) microalbuminuria, and 21 (23%) non-nephrotic proteinuria.

HER2 Expression in Circulating Tumour Cells Isolated from Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients Using a Size-Based Microfluidic Device.

HER2 is a prognostic and predictive biomarker in breast cancer, normally assessed in tumour biopsy and used to guide treatment choices. Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) escape the primary tumour and enter the bloodstream, exhibiting great metastatic potential and representing a real-time snapshot of the tumour burden. Liquid biopsy offers the unique opportunity for low invasive sampling in cancer patients and holds the potential to provide valuable information for the clinical management of cancer patients.

Cerebrovascular Complications of Anemia.

Purpose Of The Review: Anemia has been called the fifth cardiovascular risk factor. It is one of the most prevalent pathologies worldwide. In this article, we aimed to perform a narrative review of the main cerebrovascular complications of anemia and its influence on stroke prognosis.

Benign growing mass of the digit presenting as an ulcerated mass - case report and review of the literature.

A 68 year-old female presents with an ulcerated mass of the 5th digit, with rapid growth during the previous month to surgery. The mass was excised and covered with a 4th dorsal metacarpal artery perforator flap. The histologic analysis was compatible with the diagnosis of fibro-osseous pseudotumor of the digit.

MicroRNAs as a Potential New Preventive Approach in the Transition from Asymptomatic to Symptomatic Multiple Myeloma Disease.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy characterised by proliferation of clonal plasma cells (PCs) within the bone marrow (BM). Myelomagenesis is a multi-step process which goes from an asymptomatic phase, defined as monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), to a smouldering myeloma (SMM) stage, to a final active MM disease, characterised by hypercalcemia, renal failure, bone lesions anemia, and higher risk of infections. Overall, microRNAs (miRNAs) have shown to significantly impact on MM tumorigenesis, as a result of miRNA-dependent modulation of genes involved in pathways known to be crucial for MM pathogenesis and disease progression.

Clinical Characteristics, Treatment and Evolution of Splenic and Nodal Marginal Zone Lymphomas-Retrospective and Multicentric Analysis of Portuguese Centers.

Introduction: Treatment of Splenic (SMZL) and Nodal (NMZL) Marginal Zone Lymphoma is not consensual. Histologic transformation (HT) to aggressive lymphoma is a poorly understood event, with an unfavorable outcome.

Objectives: Describe the clinical characteristics, treatment, outcomes and incidence of HT.

Giant Left Ventricular (Pseudo?) Aneurysm Complicating Anterior Myocardial Infarction.

The differential diagnosis of true aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms is challenging, and multimodality cardiac imaging is often necessary. We report a case in which the limitations of these techniques are exposed, showing that post-operative evaluation of tissue layers remains the gold standard in establishing this diagnosis. ().

[International Consensus on Antinuclear Antibody Patterns in Portugal].

Introduction: Screening for autoantibodies in HEp-2 cells by indirect immunofluorescence is currently accepted as the gold-standard test for the diagnosis of systemic autoimmune diseases. The main objective of the International Consensus on ANA Patterns is to achieve a consensus on the nomenclature and description of antinuclear antibody morphological patterns. This work aims to build on the International Consensus on ANA Patterns project to establish a nomenclature consensus in Portugal, thus contributing to harmonization in autoimmune diagnosis and promoting diagnostic quality in autoimmune systemic rheumatic diseases.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma arising in osteogenesis imperfecta.

We present the case of a 32-year-old man with a diagnosis of type-III osteogenesis imperfecta who developed a telangiectatic osteosarcoma in the proximal right tibia. An above-knee amputation was performed and after one-year follow-up, pulmonary metastatic lesions were detected on the thoracic CT scan. Palliative chemotherapy was proposed and to date the patient is still living and is under medical treatment.

Recurrent renal cell carcinoma presenting as a cutaneous metastasis: A case report and review of the literature.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common urological malignancy. Despite early detection and surgical treatment, some lesions recur late at distant sites. The most common dissemination sites are lung, bone, and liver.

A comprehensive scoping review of tibial cysts after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to perform a scoping review of published literature reporting on surgical management of tibial cysts which developed after ACLR.

Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O'Malley framework for scoping studies and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. A search strategy using the terms ["Tibial Cyst" AND "ACL"], ["Pretibial Cyst" AND "ACL"] was applied to the PUBMED database.

Acute kidney injury in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: A Portuguese cohort.

Introduction: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients ranges from 0.5% to 35% and has been associated with worse prognosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, severity, duration, risk factors and prognosis of AKI in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Objective: The "Open Lung Approach" (OLA), that includes high levels of positive end-expiratory pressure coupled with limited tidal volumes, is considered optimal for adult patients with ARDS. However, many previous meta-analyses have shown only marginal benefits of OLA on mortality but with statistical heterogeneity. It is crucial to identify the most likely moderators of this effect.

Predictors for incomplete response to ursodeoxycholic acid in primary biliary cholangitis. Data from a national registry of liver disease.

Background: The current standard of treatment in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), although a considerable proportion of patients show incomplete response resulting in disease progression.
