Background: Reduced empathy is a common symptom in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Although empathy deficits have been extensively researched in sporadic cases, few studies have explored the differences in familial forms of FTD.

Methods: Empathy was examined using a modified version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (mIRI) in 676 participants from the Genetic FTD Initiative: 216 mutation-negative controls, 192 C9orf72 expansion carriers, 193 GRN mutation carriers and 75 MAPT mutation carriers.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (Shulman disease) with clinical, imaging and pathological correlation.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare subacute fibrosing disorder of unknown aetiology, characterised by thickening of the muscular fascia and subcutaneous tissue, leading to swelling of limbs and trunk and sparing fingers and toes. Eosinophilic infiltration and degranulation may prompt tissue damage and consequent fibrosis due to the accumulation of collagen and extracellular matrix proteins. MRI is the best imaging modality for diagnosis, depicting fascial thickening and enhancement.

Bone marrow edema syndrome: an unusual cause for spontaneous unrelentless bilateral knee pain.

Bone marrow edema syndrome is a rare disease with an unknown etiology, self-limited and usually associated with an indolent course, which can also generate severe pain with tremendous functional impairment. The authors present a case of a 19-year-old female patient with a progressive, non-traumatic and unrelentless pain involving both knees, requiring persistently walking aids and analgesic drugs. The imaging studies showed a bilateral distal femur and proximal tibia bone marrow edema in the magnetic resonance imaging.

Cadherin-3 is a novel oncogenic biomarker with prognostic value in glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and malignant primary brain tumor in adults. The prognosis of patients is very poor, with a median overall survival of ~ 15 months after diagnosis. Cadherin-3 (also known as P-cadherin), a cell-cell adhesion molecule encoded by the CDH3 gene, is deregulated in several cancer types, but its relevance in GBM is unknown.

The impact of transient and persistent acute kidney injury in hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been described in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and is considered a marker of disease severity and a negative prognostic factor for survival. In this study, the authors aimed to study the impact of transient and persistent acute kidney injury (pAKI) on in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Department of Medicine of the Centro Hospitalar Universitario Lisboa Norte, Lisbon, Portugal, between March 2020 and August 2020.
