Background: The importance of blood lipids in the pathogenesis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is widely discussed in the literature. However, the published results that hyperlipidaemia causes hearing problems are contradictory. The objective of this study was to establish whether increased lipid levels affect the risk of idiopathic SSNHL.

Objective: Eating disorders are a cause of the recent obesity epidemic. Food addiction (FA) and factors associated with eating disorders have not been adequately studied in adolescents.

Method: The final study sample included 1,144 students.

One possible way of obtaining cellulose nanocrystals and aqueous sols with novel properties is based on modification of supramolecular structure of the polysaccharide. This modification involves rearrangements of hydrogen bonds and has an effect on polymer morphology, formation of surface reactive sites and interface interactions. Disc-like nanocrystals of cellulose II were prepared by solvolysis of regenerated cellulose in acetic acid/octanol medium in the presence of 0.

Present study deals with the effect of 24 h pre-incubation with exogenous anthocyanins (ANTH), extracted from red cabbage leaves, on key metabolic processes (photosynthesis and respiration) and pro-/antioxidant balance in the aquatic macrophyte Egeria densa (Planch.) Casp., Hydrocharitaceae family, treated with Cd and Mn (in sulfate form) at a concentration of 100 μmol.

We have previously shown that carotenoids increase lifespan of model organisms Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. In the present study, we investigated the effects of cloudberry extract, an abundant food for people in North, with a relatively large carotenoid content on Drosophila melanogaster lifespan parameters and resistance to different stress conditions. It was shown that the cloudberry extract increased the median lifespan and the age of 90% mortality of females up to 11-19%.

Insufficient attention to the standardization of conditions for test organisms can lead to a distortion of bioassay results by changing the characteristics of the culture. The present study deals with the influence of abiotic factors (temperature of cultivated water, its chemical composition, season of the year) and biotic factors (seeding density) on the culture of Daphnia magna Straus. The natural mortality of D.

Article Synopsis
  • The study measured various structural and functional parameters, as well as redox homeostasis, in the leaves of Artemisia santonica growing near Elton Lake, Russia.
  • It found that photosynthetic activity and green pigment content were highest in the morning, while key pigments for stress response peaked in the afternoon and declined by evening.
  • The results indicated that A. santonica exhibits several protective adaptations to cope with environmental stressors like soil salinization and high solar intensity.

In the present study, we investigated the relationship of lifespan with different characteristics of the life history (length of the developmental period, imago body weight, fecundity) and stress resistance (response to oxidative stress, hyperthermia, starvation, and ionizing radiation) in flies of 12 species of the Drosophila genus. It was shown, that D. virilis has the highest maximum lifespan, but the lifespan of D.

Background: To understand electrophysiological mechanisms that underlie the progression of compensated right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) to heart failure, the purpose of the study was to evaluate remodeling of ventricular repolarization in connection with hemodynamic abnormalities and vulnerability of the heart ventricles to arrhythmias in RVH rats with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and heart failure.

Methods: PAH followed by heart failure was induced by monocrotaline in adult female Wistar rats. Unipolar epicardial electrograms and cardiac hemodynamic parameters were recorded in situ.

The ability of giant hogweeds to form monodominant communities and even pure monostands in invaded areas has been well documented. Understanding of the mechanisms leading to monostand formation can aid in determining the limitations of existing community ecology models and establishing an effective management plan for invasive species elimination. The aim of this observational study was to investigate traits of Heracleum sosnowskyi plants (demography, canopy structure, morphology and physiology) of the plants in a pure stand in an invaded area useful for understanding potential monostand formation mechanisms.

Isoproterenol in high doses induces infarction-like myocardial damage and structural and functional remodelling of the ventricular myocardium. The purpose of the present study was to investigate ventricular repolarization in a rat model of isoproterenol-induced heart failure. Isoproterenol was administered twice to female Wistar rats (170 mg/kg, s.
