Introduction: Proximal Femur Fractures (PFFs) are a significant public health issue and occur in the context of global frailty and aging. Recent literature identifies new patient-related prognostic factors that focus on socioeconomic environment, patient well-being, or nutrition status. Specific scores have been developed, but in most cases, they fail to be in line with the comprehensive geriatric assessment, or do not assess the newly identified prognostic factors, contain multitude collinearities, or are too complex to be used in the daily practice.

More rapid blood interferon α2 decline in fatal versus surviving COVID-19 patients.

Front Immunol

December 2023

Université Paris-Saclay, INSERM, CEA, Center for Immunology of Viral, Auto-immune, Hematological and Bacterial diseases (IMVA-HB/IDMIT), UMR1184, Le Kremlin Bicêtre, France.

Background: The clinical outcome of COVID-19 pneumonia is highly variable. Few biological predictive factors have been identified. Genetic and immunological studies suggest that type 1 interferons (IFN) are essential to control SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Article Synopsis
  • * A meta-analysis of 37 studies revealed that higher MEA is linked to different DNA methylation patterns in offspring at birth, childhood, and adolescence, with significant findings at 473 specific sites associated with maternal factors like smoking and nutrition.
  • * The research underscores the connection between socio-economic status and biological processes, enhancing our understanding of how maternal education impacts health through genetic mechanisms and emphasizing the role of social determinants in health disparities.

Article Synopsis
  • Preterm birth significantly increases the risk of mortality in children with major congenital anomalies (CAs), with the risks being higher for those born at very low gestational ages.
  • Maternal age under 20 years is linked to higher mortality rates both in infancy and early childhood, while female children have a slightly increased risk compared to males.
  • Understanding these risk factors can improve clinical care and provide better support for parents of children born with CAs.

SALIVARY GLAND NEOPLASMS. Salivary gland tumors represent a heterogeneous group of lesions, with various anatomical locations. The most frequent site of involvement is the parotid, and the most frequent histology is pleomorphic adenoma, a benign tumor with the potential for recurrence and malignant transformation.

Université Paris Cité, Centre of Research in Epidemiology and StatisticS (CRESS), Obstetrical Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiology Research Team (EPOPé), Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale (Inserm), Institut national de recherche pour l'agriculture, l'alimentation et l'environnement (INRAE), Paris, France (Dr Monier, Ms Lelong, and Drs Khoshnood and Zeitlin).

Background: Prenatal screening for congenital anomalies is an important component of maternity care, with continual advances in screening technology. However, few recent studies have investigated the overall effectiveness of a systematic policy of prenatal screening for congenital anomalies, such as in France where an ultrasound per trimester is recommended for all pregnant individuals.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the proportion and the type of congenital anomalies that are not detected during pregnancy.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the association between quality and features related to internet users of the most viewed YouTube videos about COVID-19 and chloroquine, during the first wave of the pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional observational study focusing on the most viewed YouTube videos on COVID-19 and chloroquine treatment, in French and English. The primary outcome was the association between video quality as assessed by DISCERN and modified JAMA scores, and video features related to internet users as assessed by number of viewership and likes.

KIT Mutations and Other Genetic Defects in Mastocytosis: Implications for Disease Pathology and Targeted Therapies.

A KIT activating mutation (usually KIT D816V) is detected in neoplastic cells in greater than 90% of indolent patients with systemic mastocytosis (SM). In more advanced variants of SM, additional genetic defects can be found in several myeloid malignancy-related genes, which can be detected by applying next-generation sequencing. Currently, the techniques recommended to detect the KIT D816V mutation and quantify the mutational burden in peripheral blood, bone marrow, or other organs/tissues are allele specific-quantitative PCR or droplet digital PCR.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent and highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorder of major societal concern. Diagnosis can be challenging and there are large knowledge gaps regarding its etiology, though studies suggest an interplay of genetic and environmental factors involving epigenetic mechanisms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) show promise as biomarkers of human pathology and novel therapies, and here we aimed to identify blood miRNAs associated with traits of ADHD as possible biomarker candidates and further explore their biological relevance.

Many patients affected by COVID-19 suffer from debilitating persistent symptoms whose risk factors remained poorly understood. This prospective study examined the association of depression and anxiety symptoms measured before and at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic with the incidence of persistent symptoms. Among 25,114 participants [mean (SD) age, 48.

Systemic pharmacological treatments for chronic plaque psoriasis: a network meta-analysis.

Cochrane Database Syst Rev

July 2023

Department of Dermatology, Hôpital Henri Mondor, Créteil, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease affecting skin and/or joints, significantly impacting quality of life, with no known cure but manageable through various treatments.
  • This study aimed to evaluate and rank the effectiveness and safety of non-biological systemic agents, small molecules, and biologics for moderate-to-severe psoriasis using a network meta-analysis approach.
  • Researchers analyzed data from randomized controlled trials, focusing on the percentage of participants achieving nearly clear skin and the occurrence of serious side effects, to determine the relative benefits and harms of different treatment options.

Article Synopsis
  • The placebo effect happens when someone feels better because they believe a treatment works, even if it’s not real medicine.
  • This effect can change results in studies, especially if the symptoms being looked at are based on how a person feels.
  • The paper talks about when the placebo effect can trick researchers during comparisons of treatments and shows how it was used to look at different therapies for depression.

Sustainability analysis of the Mediterranean diet: results from the French NutriNet-Santé study.

Br J Nutr

December 2023

Université Sorbonne Paris Nord and Université Paris Cité, Inserm, INRAE, CNAM, Centre of Research in Epidemiology and StatisticS (CRESS), Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team (EREN), F-93017 Bobigny, France.

The Mediterranean diet is often proposed as a sustainable diet model. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and sustainability domains in a cohort of French adults, using multiple criteria including nutritional quality, environmental pressures, monetary cost and dietary pesticide exposure. Food intakes of 29 210 NutriNet-Santé volunteers were assessed in 2014 using a semi-quantitative FFQ.

Background: The effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields, especially their long-term health effects, including childhood leukaemia, remain elusive. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the exposure to magnetic fields >0.4 μT as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans (group 2 B)' for childhood leukaemia.

Outputs from living evidence syntheses projects have been used widely during the pandemic by guideline developers to form evidence-based recommendations. However, the needs of different stakeholders cannot be accommodated by solely providing pre-defined non amendable numerical summaries. Stakeholders also need to understand the data and perform their own exploratory analyses.

Few studies have investigated the seasonal patterns of embryonal tumours. Based on data from the French National Registry of Childhood Cancers, the present study aimed to investigate seasonal variations in embryonal tumour incidence rates by month of birth and by month of diagnosis. The study included 6635 primary embryonal tumour cases diagnosed before the age of 15 years over the period 2000-2015 in mainland France.
