Background And Purpose: Activation of the defence reaction inhibits the baroreflex response via the intermediate rostro-ventromedial medulla (B3 raphé) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). Our aim was to determine whether and how baroreflex inhibition, induced by the disinhibition of the rostral cuneiform nucleus (part of the defence pathway), involves 5-HT neurons in B3 and 5-HT receptors in the NTS.

Experimental Approach: We performed immunohistochemistry and anatomical experiments to determine whether raphé 5-HT cells expressing Fos were directly targeted by the rostral cuneiform nucleus.

Guidelines for pharmacological treatment of patients with paraphilic disorders have been developed by a working group of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (Thibaut et al., 2010 ). With an increasing duration of experience and number of treated patients as well as aging patients, change of or withdrawal from testosterone-lowering medications (TLM) has become an important issue.

Introduction The PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway plays a critical role in cancer cell growth, proliferation and angiogenesis, but also in brain homeostasis and the pathophysiology of mood disorders. The impact of the mTOR inhibitor everolimus on the mood of breast cancer patients is unknown. Materials and methods Consecutive, post-menopausal metastatic breast cancer patients receiving hormone therapy +/- everolimus were prospectively followed-up using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the MADRS (Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale) questionnaires.

Background: Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is mainly characterized by a seasonal pattern of depressive recurrences over the years. However, few studies have been conducted on the long-term course of patients with SAD, whose findings raised questions about the diagnosis stability over time. This study aimed to better characterize the diagnosis evolution, and determine prognosis markers.

Objectives: We previously developed the Functional Remission Of General Schizophrenia (FROGS) scale demonstrating first, reliable assessment in a cross-sectional study and second, good time-stability. The purpose of the present analysis was to propose a shorter version (mini-FROGS), more compatible with the limited time available in a psychiatric visit, focusing on the functional domains that have higher likelihood of being improved with higher and/or longer symptomatic remission in different cultural backgrounds.

Methods: We used multiple regressions to find the most informative items explaining increased length of symptomatic remission, using prospective data from a national observational multicenter survey.

Background: Functional recovery after a major depressive episode (MDE) requires both clinical remission and preservation of cognitive skills. As attentional deficit may persist after remission, leading to functional impairment, its role as a prognosis marker needs to be considered.

Methods: Five hundred eight depressed outpatients (DSM-IV) were assessed at baseline for clinical symptoms (QIDS-SR), social functioning (Sheehan Disability Scale, SDS) and attention through the d2 test of attention and the trail making test, simple tests, respectively, requiring to quote or to interconnect relevant items.

Recent research efforts have progressively shifted towards preventative psychiatry and prognostic identification of individuals before disease onset. We describe the development of a serum biomarker test for the identification of individuals at risk of developing schizophrenia based on multiplex immunoassay profiling analysis of 957 serum samples. First, we conducted a meta-analysis of five independent cohorts of 127 first-onset drug-naive schizophrenia patients and 204 controls.

Electronic address:

Background: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are key enzymes of histone acetylation, and abnormalities in histone modifications and in the level of HDAC proteins have been reported in schizophrenia. The objective of the present study was to systematically test the HDAC genes for its association with schizophrenia.

Methods: A family-based genetic association study (951 Caucasian subjects in 313 nuclear families) using 601 tag-single nucleotide polymorphisms in HDAC genes was conducted followed by a replication study of top-ranked markers in a sample of 1427 Caucasian subjects from 241 multiplex families and 176 trios.

The cumulative duration of depressive episodes, and their repetition, has a detrimental effect on depression recurrence rates and the chances of antidepressant response, and even increases the risk of dementia, raising the possibility that depressive episodes could be neurotoxic. Psychomotor retardation could constitute a marker of this negative burden of past depressive episodes, with conflicting findings according to the use of clinical versus cognitive assessments. We assessed the role of the Retardation Depressive Scale (filled in by the clinician) and the time required to perform the neurocognitive d2 attention test and the Trail Making Test (performed by patients) in a sample of 2048 depressed outpatients, before and after 6 to 8 weeks of treatment with agomelatine.

Article Synopsis
  • * Antidepressants that target these monoamines can significantly affect brain activity, particularly in areas related to emotions and cognition, and may help reverse some changes seen in depressed patients.
  • * However, drugs that target only one monoamine often don't work for a lot of patients or prevent future depression, leading to research into new multi-target strategies that harness the complex interactions among these neurotransmitters for better treatment options.

The aim of the present work was to systematically review all association studies of inflammation genes with alcohol dependence/alcohol abuse (AD/AA) and to perform a meta-analysis. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated by contrasting the ratio of counts of the 'high-risk' versus 'low-risk' alleles in AD/AA cases versus controls. Data reported in at least three published studies were available for four genetic polymorphisms [TNF-α-238 (rs361525, G/A); TNF-α-308 (rs1800629, G/A); IL-1RA (VNTR [86 bp]n); IL-10-592 (rs1800896, C/A)].

Diethylstilbestrol and risk of psychiatric disorders: a critical review and new insights.

World J Biol Psychiatry

INSERM, Laboratory of Pathophysiology of Psychiatric Diseases, U894 Centre of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, Paris, France.

Objectives: We explored whether in utero DES exposure has produced consistent findings with regard to an increased risk of psychiatric disorders.

Methods: We reviewed systematically the epidemiological studies investigating a possible association between prenatal DES exposure and risk of psychiatric disorders.

Results: We identified 10 relevant studies reporting the psychiatric outcome of offspring with a history of in utero DES exposure compared to a control group.

Objective: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with reduced IQ and high levels of externalizing behavior (EB). This study tested if DRD4 7-repeat allele and DAT1 10-repeat allele homozygosity interact in modulating correlations between IQ and EB in affected boys.

Methods: Boys (n=130) between 6 and 12 years of age diagnosed with ADHD were included in the study.
