Solid tumors are mainly characterized by a specific hypoxic microenvironment which makes them particularly challenging to treat. The Carbonic Anhydrase IX (CA IX) is one of the major enzymes implicated in the regulation and maintaining of such conditions and therefore its targeting represents a winning approach in recent tumor targeted therapy. In our search for an innovative combination therapy, we attained the synthesis of selective CA IX inhibitors which are also used for cell specific delivery of cytotoxic organotellurium scaffolds.

Electrostatic intermolecular interactions are important in many aspects of biology. We have studied the main electrostatic features involved in the interaction of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein with the human receptor Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As the principal computational tool, we have used the FORTE approach, capable to model proton fluctuations and computing free energies for a very large number of protein-protein systems under different physical-chemical conditions, here focusing on the RBD-ACE2 interactions.

Recently, the development of new materials with the desired characteristics for functional tissue engineering, ensuring tissue architecture and supporting cellular growth, has gained significant attention. Hydrogels, which possess similar properties to natural cellular matrixes, being able to repair or replace biological tissues and support the healing process through cellular proliferation and viability, are a challenge when designing tissue scaffolds. This paper provides new insights into hydrogel-based polymeric blends (hydroxypropyl cellulose/Pluronic F68), aiming to evaluate the contributions of both components in the development of new tissue scaffolds.

Glioblastoma (GB) is the most aggressive and recurrent form of brain cancer in adults. We hypothesized that the identification of biomarkers such as certain microRNAs (miRNAs) and the circulating microvesicles (MVs) that transport them could be key to establishing GB progression, recurrence and therapeutic response. For this purpose, circulating MVs were isolated from the plasma of GB patients (before and after surgery) and of healthy subjects and characterized by flow cytometry.

Because the combination of π-conjugated polymers with biocompatible synthetic counterparts leads to the development of bio-relevant functional materials, this paper reports a new oligo(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (OMeOx)-containing thiophene macromonomer, denoted . It can be used as a reactive precursor for synthesis of a polymerizable 2,2'-3-OMeOx-substituted bithiophene by Suzuki coupling. Also a grafted polythiophene amphiphile with OMeOx side chains was synthesized by its self-acid-assisted polymerization (SAAP) in bulk.

SARS-CoV-2 remains a health threat with the continuous emergence of new variants. This work aims to expand the knowledge about the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) interactions with cell receptors and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). By using constant-pH Monte Carlo simulations, the free energy of interactions between the RBD from different variants and several partners (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE2) polymorphisms and various mAbs) were predicted.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) bearing methyl, thiol or glucose groups were synthesized, and their encapsulation and release behaviors for the anticancer drug Doxorubicin (Dox) were investigated in comparison with nonporous homologous materials. The chemical modification of thiol-functional silica with a double bond glucoside was completed for the first time, by green thiol-ene photoaddition. The MSNs were characterized in terms of structure (FT-IR, Raman), morphology (TEM), porosity (nitrogen sorption-desorption) and Zeta potential measurements.

Diblock copolymers of polyhistidine are known for their self-assembly into micelles and their pH-dependent disassembly due to the amphiphilic character of the copolymer and the unsaturated imidazole groups that undergo a hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic transition in an acidic pH. This property has been largely utilized for the design of drug delivery systems that target a tumor environment possessing a slightly lower extracellular pH (6.8-7.

Zoledronic acid (ZA) is used in the treatment of various bone pathologies, but it forms complexes with calcium ions present in body fluids, decreasing ZA bioavailability. Thereby, the study first describes the identification of ZA-calcium complexes that form in calcium-rich environments, in order to establish the bioavailable ZA concentration. Then, a new method for quantification of low ZA amounts in milieus that mimics in vivo conditions by using simulated body fluid and calcium sulfate hemihydrate was described.

Cerium oxide (CeO) nanoparticles were synthesized with a chemical precipitation method in different experimental conditions using cerium nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO)·6HO) as a precursor, modifying the solution pH, the reaction time, and Co atoms as dopants, in order to tune the band gap energy values of the prepared samples. The physical characteristics of the synthesized ceria nanoparticles were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis analyses and photoluminescence measurements. XRD data revealed a pure cubic fluorite structure of CeO NPs, the estimation of crystallite sizes by Scherrer's formula indicates the formation of crystals with dimensions between 11.

Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a progressive inflammatory disorder characterized by extracellular matrix remodeling and valvular interstitial cells (VIC) osteodifferentiation leading to valve leaflets calcification and impairment movement. Runx2, the master transcription factor involved in VIC osteodifferentiation, modulates the expression of other osteogenic molecules. Previously, we have demonstrated that the osteoblastic phenotypic shift of cultured VIC is impeded by Runx2 silencing using fullerene (C60)-polyethyleneimine (PEI)/short hairpin (sh)RNA-Runx2 (shRunx2) polyplexes.
