Introduction: MODY2 (maturity-onset diabetes of the young type 2, MIM125851) is a monogenic diabetes with an autosomal dominant transmission caused by a variant of the gene. MODY2 is often confused with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but despite a slightly elevated blood glucose level, it does not induce long-term vascular complications, nor does it require pharmacological treatment. Genetic testing for the diagnosis of MODY2 is currently reserved for genetic specialists and some physicians.

Study Question: Does the prevalence of 12-month infertility in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, and Uganda differ between women trying to conceive and the broader population of women exposed to unprotected sex, and how are prevalence estimates affected by model assumptions and adjustments?

Summary Answer: Estimates of 12-month infertility among tryers ranged from 8% in Burkina Faso to 30% in Côte d'Ivoire, increasing substantially among a larger population of women exposed to unprotected intercourse.

What Is Known Already: While having a child is a fundamental human experience, the extent to which women and couples experience infertility is a neglected area of research, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Existing estimates of infertility in this region vary widely from 2% to 32%, however, potential impacts of variability in study populations and model assumptions have not been well-examined.

Study Question: What is the nature of women's care-seeking for difficulties conceiving in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including the correlates of seeking biomedical infertility care at a health facility?

Summary Answer: Care-seeking for difficulties getting pregnant was low, much of which involved traditional or religious sources of care, with evidence of sociodemographic disparities in receipt of biomedical care.

What Is Known Already: Nearly all research on infertility care-seeking patterns in SSA is limited to clinic-based studies among the minority of people in these settings who obtain facility-based services. In the absence of population-based data on infertility care-seeking, we are unable to determine the demand for services and disparities in the use of more effective biomedical sources of care.

Objectives: Upper limb lymphedema secondary to breast cancer treatment is the leading cause of lymphedema in France. Despite improved surgical practices and de-escalation of radiotherapy, the risk of lymphedema after breast cancer still affects 5-20% of patients, with this variation depending on the measurement method used and the population studied. Lymphedema has a negative impact on quality of life and body image, and their possible occurrence remains a major concern for all women treated for breast cancer.

Genital Lymphedema after Cancer Treatment: A Narrative Review.

Cancers (Basel)

November 2022

Department of Lymphology, Centre National de Référence des Maladies Vasculaires Rares (Lymphoedèmes Primaires), Hôpital Cognacq-Jay, 15, rue Eugène-Millon, 75015 Paris, France.

Genital lymphedema may affect males and females after cancer treatment (gynecological, such as cervical, uterine or ovarian, melanoma, prostate, anus…). It is frequently associated with lower limb lymphedema, and is responsible for discomfort, cosmetic disfigurement and functional disturbances. Impacts on body image, sexual function and quality of life are major, and difficult to explore because cancer treatment itself and lymphedema are so closely interwoven.

This study aims to estimate induced abortion incidence and safety in Burkina Faso using direct and indirect methods, overall and by women's background characteristics. Data come from a nationally representative survey of reproductive aged women (n = 6,388). To address social desirability bias in abortion reporting, we asked about respondents' closest female friends' experience with abortion.

Background: Abortion is a legally restricted, yet common reproductive life event among women in Burkina Faso; however, women's abortion experiences vary greatly depending on their social and economic capital, partner involvement, and level of knowledge. We sought to classify women's abortion care-seeking experiences across the life course and social conditions into typologies using qualitative data.

Methods: An initial quantitative survey among a nationally representative sample of women ages 15-49 years collected information on women's induced abortion experiences.

Social network-based methods are increasingly used to estimate induced abortion incidence and investigate correlates. Approaches differ in the social tie definitions used to identify which social network members' abortion experiences respondents will report. This study compares the effect of using the "best friend" (closest female friend) versus "confidante" (specifying mutual sharing of personal information) definition on abortion incidence estimation.

[The French "pill scare": Did women go to a gynecologist more often to have an easier access to the IUD?].

Rev Epidemiol Sante Publique

November 2020

Soins primaires et prévention, Centre de Recherche en Épidémiologie et Santé des populations, U1018, Inserm, 94807 Villejuif, France; Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 615 N Wolfe St, Baltimore, MD 21205, United States.

Background: In December 2012, a media controversy about negative side-effects of oral contraceptives on women's health, also called "pill scare", broke out in France. While several analyses highlighted a change in women's contraceptive practices following this media controversy, no analysis has been conducted to determine the possible changes in their choices of health professionals and its repercussions on their contraceptive use.

Methods: Our study is based on data from three population-based cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2010, 2013 and 2016 (Fecond 2010, Fecond 2013 and Baromètre Santé 2016) that collected information on women's contraceptive practices and the specialties of the health professionals having prescribed the methods they were using.

While the consequences of various "pill scares" have been relatively well-documented in the public health literature revealing a drop in pill use and a rise in unplanned pregnancies and abortion rates, researchers rarely considered that these controversies would affect women contraceptive practices differently according to their social background. Indeed, social differentiations in reaction to "pill scares" could contribute to reinforce the social gradient in the use of contraceptive methods and choice of visiting the health professionals who prescribe them. These could contribute to an increase in health inequalities on access to contraceptive methods.

Induced abortion incidence and safety in Côte d'Ivoire.

PLoS One

July 2020

Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health, The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America.

Background: In Côte d'Ivoire, induced abortion is legally restricted unless a pregnancy threatens a woman's life. Yet the limited available evidence suggests abortion is common and that unsafe abortion is contributing to the country's high maternal mortality. Our study aimed to estimate the one-year incidence of induced abortion in Côte d'Ivoire using both direct and indirect methodologies, determine the safety of reported abortions, and identify the women most likely to experience a recent induced abortion or an unsafe abortion.
