Methods: A multicenter observational study of patients with sickle cell disease, comparing vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) requiring hospital care between pregnancies with versus without prenatal corticosteroids.

Results: In 40 pregnancies exposed to prenatal corticosteroids, compared with 370 unexposed pregnancies, VOC were not more frequent (62.

The new timing in acute care surgery (new TACS) classification: a WSES Delphi consensus study.

World J Emerg Surg

April 2023

Department of General Surgery, Level I Trauma Center, Bufalini Hospital, Cesena, eCampus University, CREAS, Ser.In.Ar. Bologna University, Cesena, Italy.

Background: Timely access to the operating room for emergency general surgery (EGS) indications remains a challenge across the globe, largely driven by operating room availability and staffing constraints. The "timing in acute care surgery" (TACS) classification was previously published to introduce a new tool to triage the timely and appropriate access of EGS patients to the operating room. However, the clinical and operational effectiveness of the TACS classification has not been investigated in subsequent validation studies.

[Recognizing acute confusional syndrome and neurocognitive disorders in the emergency department].

In the heart of the emergency room, when the nurse takes charge of the patient, he/she must be able to distinguish between an acute confusional syndrome and psychobehavioral symptoms related to neurocognitive disorders. Indeed, early identification of the confusional syndrome is essential to accelerate the implementation of non-drug measures by the nurse in order to reduce its duration and the induced complications.

In the hospital, the geriatric missions of nurses and paramedical and medical teams are essential in order to benefit elderly patients and to fight against the immobilization syndrome through responsiveness and quality care. This care takes place in parallel with the specific medical care of the medical pathologies treated. In 2017, the High Authority for Health advocated good professional practices to avoid iatrogenic dependence of hospitalized elderly people.

Background: Pectus arcuatum is often mistaken for a type of pectus carinatum. However, pectus arcuatum is a unique clinical form of pectus caused by premature obliteration of the sternal sutures (manubrial sternum, four sternebrae and xiphoïd process), whereas pectus carinatum is due to abnormal growth of the costal cartilage. In order to better describe pectus arcuatum, we analysed the files of patients with pectus arcuatum followed in our centers.

Validation of the Blood Test MACK-3 for the Noninvasive Diagnosis of Fibrotic Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis: An International Study With 1924 Patients.

Background & Aims: Drug development in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is hampered by a high screening failure rate that reaches 60% to 80% in therapeutic trials, mainly because of the absence of fibrotic NASH on baseline liver histology. MACK-3, a blood test including 3 biomarkers (aspartate aminotransferase, homeostasis model assessment, and cytokeratin 18), recently was developed for the noninvasive diagnosis of fibrotic NASH. We aimed to validate the diagnostic accuracy of this noninvasive test in an international multicenter study.

Background: Older adults and immunocompromised individulas are often excluded from vaccine trials.

Aim: We hypothesised that during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the proportion of trials excluding these patients decreased.

Methods: Using the US Food and Drug Administration and and European Medicines Agency search engines, we identified all vaccines approved against pneumococcal disease, influenza (quadrivalent vaccines), and COVID-19 from 2011 to 2021.

The climate of domestic violence is a major risk factor for the health and development of children from an early age, as well as for parenthood. The role of health professionals is essential in addressing this issue. Training on this subject is necessary because it allows them to feel more comfortable in dealing with these issues and to work in an interdisciplinary manner.

Objective: To determine whether changes in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and changes in pulmonary artery compliance ( ) are associated with changes in exercise capacity assessed either by changes in peak oxygen consumption (' ) or by changes in 6-min walk distance (6MWD) in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) undergoing balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA).

Methods: Invasive haemodynamic parameters, peak ' and 6MWD were measured within 24 h, before and after BPA (interval 3.1±2.

Background: Non-cancer mortality in cancer patients may be higher than overall mortality in the general population due to a combination of factors, such as long-term adverse effects of treatments, and genetic, environmental or lifestyle-related factors. If so, conventional indicators may underestimate net survival and cure fraction. Our aim was to propose and evaluate a mixture cure survival model that takes into account the increased risk of non-cancer death for cancer patients.

Background: Mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) devices are used to improve airway clearance in individuals with acute respiratory failure. Some MI-E devices measure cough peak flow (CPF) during MI-E to optimize pressure adjustments. The aim was to compare CPF and effective cough volume (ECV: volume expired/coughed > 3 L/s) measurements between 4 MI-E devices under simulated conditions of stable versus collapsed airway.

Frontal circuits play a critical role in motor, cognitive, and affective processing - and their dysfunction may result in a variety of brain disorders. However, exactly which frontal domains mediate which (dys)function remains largely elusive. Here, we study 534 deep brain stimulation electrodes implanted to treat four different brain disorders.

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immune disorder caused by mutations in one of the five subunits of the NADPH oxidase complex expressed in phagocytes. Two-thirds of CGD cases are caused by mutations in CYBB that encodes NOX2 or gp91phox. Some rare X91+-CGD point mutations lead to a loss of function but with a normal expression of the mutated NOX2 protein.

With the rise of risk prevention surgery, more and more bilateral mastectomies are performed. These present a challenge when patients desire autologous reconstruction. Some surgeons perform reconstructions using a double DIEP flap, but this technique, which requires rapid operation and extensive experience, can sometimes be difficult to implement.

Late-onset enteric virus infection associated with hepatitis (EVAH) in transplanted SCID patients.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and gene therapy (GT) are potential cures for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), but patients often face late-onset issues like persistent hepatitis.
  • A study of SCID patients revealed that 11 out of 44 experienced persistent hepatitis linked to chronic enteric viral infections, particularly enteric viruses not found in non-hepatitis SCID patients.
  • Treatments like retransplantation or gene therapy showed promise, as 5 patients achieved remission of hepatitis and viral clearance, highlighting the importance of addressing immune dysregulation in these patients.
