Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (cALL) survivors suffer early-onset chronic diseases classically associated with aging. Normal aging is accompanied by organ dysfunctions, including immunological ones. We hypothesize that thymic immunosenescence occurs in cALL survivors and that its severity may correlate with early-onset chronic diseases.

A private dataset (153 patients; 1530 images) and a public dataset (55 patient; 550 images) were included in this retrospective study. The datasets contained patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) with biopsy-proven steatosis grades and control individuals without steatosis.

The liver is a highly specialized organ involved in regulating systemic metabolism. Understanding metabolic reprogramming of liver disease is key in discovering clinical biomarkers, which relies on robust tissue biobanks. However, sample collection and storage procedures pose a threat to obtaining reliable results, as metabolic alterations may occur during sample handling.

Objectives: To compare the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Doppler ultrasound (DUS) findings with the pathological findings of soft tissue vascular tumors (STVTs) according to the 2018 ISSVA (International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies) classification to differentiate vascular tumors from vascular malformations.
Methods: This retrospective study included patients with STVTs who underwent contrast-enhanced MRI and pathological analysis at our hospital between 2010 and 2020. The presumptive diagnosis based on the on-site imaging and histological analysis was compared with imaging and histological analysis conducted off-site utilizing the ISSVA criteria.

Purpose Of Review: In this review, we discuss the development of the Liver Frailty Index (LFI) and how it may serve as a model for developing other organ-specific frailty indices.
Recent Findings: As the demand for solid organ transplants continues to increase, the transplantation community is enhancing its strategies for organ allocation to gain deeper insights into patient risk profiles and anticipated outcomes. Frailty has emerged as a critical concept in transplant care, offering valuable insights into adverse health outcomes.

Introduction: One in five Canadians lives with chronic pain. Evidence shows that some individuals experience pain that fluctuates in intensity following a circadian (24-hour) rhythm. Endogenous molecular rhythms regulate the function of physiological processes that govern pain mechanisms.

Background: Survival analysis based on Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier curves, initially devised for oncology trials, have frequently been used in other contexts where fundamental statistical assumptions (such as a constant hazard ratio) are not satisfied. This is almost always the case in trials that compare surgery with medical management.
Methods: We review a trial that compared extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery (EC-IC bypass) with medical management (MM) of patients with symptomatic occlusion of the carotid or middle cerebral artery, where it was claimed that surgery was of no benefit.

Background: The results of a clinical trial are given in terms of primary and secondary outcomes that are obtained for each patient. Just as an instrument should provide the same result when the same object is measured repeatedly, the agreement of the adjudication of a clinical outcome between various raters is fundamental to interpret study results. The reliability of the adjudication of study endpoints determined by examination of the electronic case report forms of a pragmatic trial has not previously been tested.

The temptation to use prospective observational studies (POS) instead of conducting difficult trials (RCTs) has always existed, but with the advent of powerful computers and large databases, it can become almost irresistible. We examine the potential consequences, were this to occur, by comparing two hypothetical studies of a new treatment: one RCT, and one POS. The POS inevitably submits more patients to inferior research methodology.

Objective: To investigate the structural alterations, neovascularity, and elasticity of tendons and the relationship between elasticity and the Patient Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation score after undergoing US-guided fenestration or surgery in patients with chronic lateral elbow tendinopathy.
Methods: Participants from the per-protocol population of a randomized trial conducted between October 2016 and June 2020 were included. The surgery and fenestration groups included 24 (mean age, 50 ± 7 years [standard deviation], 10 men) and 29 (47 ± 8 years, 18 men) participants, respectively.

Viral infections, including those affecting the respiratory tract, can alter the composition of the intestinal microbiota, which, in turn, can significantly influence both innate and adaptive immune responses, resulting in either enhanced pathogen clearance or exacerbation of the infection, possibly leading to inflammatory complications. A deeper understanding of the interplay between the intestinal microbiota and host immune responses in the context of respiratory viral infections (i.e.

Background: Code-free deep learning (CFDL) is a novel tool in artificial intelligence (AI). This study directly compared the discriminative performance of CFDL models designed by ophthalmologists without coding experience against bespoke models designed by AI experts in detecting retinal pathologies from optical coherence tomography (OCT) videos and fovea-centered images.
Methods: Using the same internal dataset of 1,173 OCT macular videos and fovea-centered images, model development was performed simultaneously but independently by an ophthalmology resident (CFDL models) and a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in AI (bespoke models).

Background: Patients with solid organ transplant (SOT) and solid tumors are usually excluded from clinical trials testing immune checkpoint blockers (ICB). As transplant rates are increasing, we aimed to evaluate ICB outcomes in this population, with a special focus on lung cancer.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study collecting real data of ICB use in patients with SOT and solid tumors.

Purpose: An increase in fungal and particularly filamentous keratitis has been observed in many geographic areas, mostly in contact lens wearers. This study seeks to characterize long-term trends in fungal keratitis in a continental climate area to provide guidance for diagnosis and treatment.
Design: Retrospective multicentric case series.
Beam current transformers (BCT) are promising detectors for real-time beam monitoring in ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) electron radiotherapy. However, previous studies have reported a significant sensitivity of the BCT signal to changes in source-to-surface distance (SSD), field size, and phantom material which have until now been attributed to the fluctuating levels of electrons backscattered within the BCT. The purpose of this study is to evaluate this hypothesis, with the goal of understanding and mitigating the variations in BCT signal due to changes in irradiation conditions.

Purpose: Individuals with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) can be stigmatized in healthcare settings. We aimed to compare intervention rate (IR), intervention time (IT), and adverse event (AE) rate between PNES and epileptic seizures (ES) in the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU).
Methods: We used a prospective database of consecutive admissions to our centre's EMU between August 2021 and September 2022.
