Rodents serve as the natural reservoir and vector for a variety of pathogens, some of which are responsible for severe and life-threatening disease in humans. Despite the significant impact in humans many of these viruses, including Old and New World hantaviruses as well as Arenaviruses, most have no specific vaccine or therapeutic to treat or prevent human infection. The recent success of wildlife vaccines to mitigate rabies in animal populations offers interesting insight into the use of similar strategies for other zoonotic agents of human disease.

Werner syndrome (WS) is a premature aging disorder caused by mutations in a RecQ-family DNA helicase, WRN. Mice lacking part of the helicase domain of the WRN orthologue exhibit many phenotypic features of WS, including metabolic abnormalities and a shorter lifespan. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) improved progressively during therapy and beyond in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia on the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) 95-01 protocol. This study aimed to validate that trajectory in a successor study (DFCI 00-01) and to compare the HRQL of patients in the 2 studies.   • Conducted as a retrospective cohort study with 2041 children post noncardiac surgery, the results showed that AKI patients had significantly higher mortality rates 5 to 7 years post-discharge despite only a few deaths occurring in the year following hospitalization.
  • The research concludes that while AKI is linked to increased long-term mortality, it does not confirm causation, suggesting that high-risk AKI patients warrant special follow-up care until more is understood about these connections.

Although techniques using calcaneus screws have shown high union rates, posterior heel pain due to prominent hardware at the posterior and plantar aspect of the calcaneal tuberosity seems to be a significant complaint that often leads to hardware removal. The purpose of the present study was to identify the clinical and radiologic risk factors associated with calcaneus screw removal. Although there is a strong association between osteoporosis and skeletal muscle atrophy/dysfunction, the functional relevance of a particular biological pathway that regulates synchronously bone and skeletal muscle physiopathology is still elusive. Receptor-activator of nuclear factor κB (RANK), its ligand RANKL and the soluble decoy receptor osteoprotegerin (OPG) are the key regulators of osteoclast differentiation and bone remodelling. We thus hypothesized that RANK/RANKL/OPG, which is a key pathway for bone regulation, is involved in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) physiopathology.

This longitudinal study examined the potential relationship between the adiponectin/leptin ratio (A/L, a marker of adiposopathy) and insulin resistance (IR: homeostasis model assessment (HOMA)), insulin sensitivity (IS: Matsuda), and insulin response to an oral glucose tolerance test before and after a 16-week walking program, in 29 physically inactive pre- and postmenopausal women with obesity (BMI, 29-35 kg/m; age, 47-54 years).
