Nasogastric tube placement is frequently performed in various medical settings. While generally deemed safe in patients without risk factors, complications may occur due to malposition, justifying the need of systematic confirmation of position with chest radiographs. We present the case of a critically ill male adult patient for whom the tube position was initially deemed very unusual on postinsertion radiographs, prompting further workup which ultimately confirmed an oropharyngeal perforation with a left parapharyngeal, left visceral, retrotracheal, and right retrodiaphragmatic course, and resulting in a recurrent pneumothorax and empyema treated by surgical decortication.

N-Phenyl ureidobenzensulfonates (PUB-SOs) are a novel family of dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) inhibitors. Herein, we investigate the potential of PUB-SOs to induce acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell differentiation and apoptosis. To that end, we screened our chemolibrary to select the most potent PUB-SOs based on their antiproliferative activity and their ability to arrest the cell progression of AML cells in the S phase.

Dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids improves cognitive performance in several animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), an effect often associated with reduced amyloid-beta and/or tau pathologies. However, it remains unclear to what extent eicosapentaenoic (EPA) provides additional benefits compared to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Here, male and female 3xTg-AD mice were fed for 3 months (13-16 months of age) the following diets: (1) control (no DHA/EPA), (2) DHA (1.

  • The study explores the use of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy as effective optical methods for identifying different types of human brain tissue during deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures.
  • A custom optical probe was integrated into a DBS lead, allowing for the acquisition of DRS and CARS spectra while inserting the lead into targeted brain regions in a human cadaver, which were then analyzed to classify the tissue as white matter (WM) or gray matter (GM).
  • Results showed that these optical methods could successfully differentiate WM and GM and possibly detect blood presence, indicating that such techniques could enhance surgical guidance and potentially replace more time-consuming methods

Article Synopsis
  • High dietary intake of saturated fatty acids is being studied as a potential risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, with animal models used to examine this link due to their controlled environments.
  • A review of 32 preclinical studies found that high-fat diets led to obesity and metabolic issues, with most studies showing an increase in Aβ brain pathology but mixed results regarding tau pathology.
  • Though findings suggest that high saturated fat diets may impair cognitive function and worsen neuropathological markers, there is variability in methodologies, indicating a need for cautious interpretation and a recommendation to limit saturated fat intake to potentially reduce Alzheimer's risk.

The inflammatory response, a mixed blessing for muscle homeostasis and plasticity.

Front Physiol

November 2022

Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec, Centre de Recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l'Université Laval (CRCHUQ-CHUL), Axe Neurosciences, Université Laval, Quebec City, QC, Canada.

Skeletal muscle makes up almost half the body weight of heathy individuals and is involved in several vital functions, including breathing, thermogenesis, metabolism, and locomotion. Skeletal muscle exhibits enormous plasticity with its capacity to adapt to stimuli such as changes in mechanical loading, nutritional interventions, or environmental factors (oxidative stress, inflammation, and endocrine changes). Satellite cells and timely recruited inflammatory cells are key actors in muscle homeostasis, injury, and repair processes.
