[Transient global amnesia: A descriptive study of 12 Polynesian patients].

Introduction: According to the criteria of Hodges and Warlow, transient global amnesia is defined by sudden onset of isolated anterograde amnesia of spontaneous resolution within one to twenty-four hours. Its pathophysiological mechanisms are still uncertain.

Methods: In a retrospective study, we have analyzed epidemiological, clinical and MRI data from twelve patients admitted to the only neurological department of French Polynesia for transient global amnesia corresponding to the criteria of Hodges and Warlow between January 2010 and December 2013.

[Polynesian adaptation of the Mini-Mental State Examination].

This study aimed to develop and validate a Polynesian version of the MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination). For this study a sample (n=112) of healthy people were evaluated with the French version of the consensual version of the MMSE, to target and modify some inadequate items for French Polynesia. Subsequently, a second sample (n=112) with the same characteristics (age, educational level) as well as 46 healthy people aged 60 years and more were evaluated with the adaptive version of the MMSE (P-MMSE).

Purpose: Advances in endourology have significantly reduced indications of open surgery in the treatment of staghorn calculi. [Ciguatera fish poisoning].

Ciguatera, an ichtyosarcotoxism linked to the consumption of usually healthy coral fish is a common poisoning in the Pacific, Caribbean and Indian Ocean where it is endemic. However, increased tourism and commercial transportation of tropical fish for consumption make it an unexceptional intoxication in countries away from its endemic area. Environmental stresses such as climate changes also contribute to the expansion of its geographical area.

[Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and Epstein-Barr virus infection in children].

Objective: The authors had for aim to review pediatric cases of EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis observed, between January 1999 and December 2007, to compare their characteristics to literature data, and to suggest a pragmatic strategy for diagnosis and treatment.

Design: The following were analyzed for each patient: age at diagnosis, family history, revised Henter diagnostic criteria, EBV serology and/or PCR, results of genetic studies when available, treatment, short and long-term outcome.

Results: Four patients 11 months to seven years of age were admitted for high and prolonged fever, hepato and/or splenomegaly, and biological markers of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

Ciguatera is a foodborne poisoning caused by eating seafood from tropical and subtropical reef areas. According to official data from the local health department, cases of ciguatera in French Polynesia are estimated to involve 240 to 400 persons per 100 000 inhabitants. Associated with a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, nervous, and general signs, ciguatera is usually benign although some forms can lead to hospitalization.
