The last French department, created in 2011, Mayotte still lacks its integration into official health statistics, making it difficult to adapt care facilities to needs, as well as planning for prevention. We conducted a retrospective epidemiological study including all patients treated in the Mayotte burns unit between February 1, 2022 and January 31, 2023 (339 patients). We first studied burn patients on the island, i.

Uterine Artery Embolization before Myomectomy: Is It Worth the Trouble?

J Minim Invasive Gynecol

November 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ambre Balestra, Panayiotis Tanos and Stavros Karampelas), Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Brugmann, Brussels, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared the outcomes of myomectomy performed with preoperative uterine artery embolization (UAE) versus myomectomy alone, focusing on blood loss and complications.
  • Results showed that blood loss was significantly lower in the UAE group, but there were similar rates for postoperative complications between the two groups.
  • Long-term fertility outcomes were concerning for the UAE group, with higher rates of adhesions, miscarriages, and obstetrical complications compared to the non-UAE group.

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis for which investigations assessing host-pathogen interaction are scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the severity and bacterial species involved in human cases of leptospirosis on Reunion and Mayotte islands, territories located in the southwest Indian Ocean that have recorded high human leptospirosis incidence but display fairly distinct epidemiological situations. A retrospective multicentric study including all patients over 18 years of age from Mayotte or Reunion with proven leptospirosis was conducted from January 2018 to April 2020.

Sympathetic overactivity caused by chronic intermittent hypoxia is a hallmark of obstructive sleep apnea. A high sympathetic tone elicits increases in plasma free fatty acid and insulin. Our objective was to assess the impact of 14 nights of chronic intermittent hypoxia exposure on sympathetic activity, glucose control, lipid profile and subcutaneous fat tissue remodelling in non-obese healthy humans.

Background: Dengue is a major public health concern in Reunion Island, marked by recurrent epidemics, including successive outbreaks of dengue virus serotypes 1 and 2 (DENV1 and DENV2) with over 70,000 cases confirmed since 2017.

Methodology/principal Findings: In this study, we used Oxford Nanopore NGS technology for sequencing virologically-confirmed samples and clinical isolates collected between 2012 and 2022 to investigate the molecular epidemiology and evolution of DENV in Reunion Island. Here, we generated and analyzed a total of 499 DENV1, 360 DENV2, and 18 DENV3 sequences.

November 2023

Unité Mixte de Recherche Processus Infectieux en Milieu Insulaire Tropical (UMR PIMIT), Université de La Réunion, CNRS 9192, INSERM 1187, IRD 249, La Réunion, France.

Introduction: A high incidence of human leptospirosis is recorded on Mayotte, an oceanic island located in southwestern Indian Ocean, but the severity of the disease appears relatively mild in terms of mortality rate and admission to the intensive care unit. It has been proposed that mild leptospirosis may result from a limited virulence of some of the occurring species to which the population is exposed.

Methods: Clinical and biological data of patients admitted to the Centre Hospitalier de Mayotte were collected and the infecting species were determined through molecular typing.

  • French Guiana is a unique region notable for its rich biodiversity and diverse communities, yet it faces paradoxes such as high poverty rates with 50% of the population living below the poverty line.
  • The territory experiences a mix of health challenges, including common infectious diseases like HIV and malaria, which require tailored medical approaches due to their unique local characteristics.
  • European resources in French Guiana facilitate advanced diagnostic and treatment options, enhancing research opportunities despite the smaller population compared to surrounding countries, and enabling better management of both common and rare diseases.

Dedicator of cytokinesis (DOCK) proteins play a central role in actin cytoskeleton regulation. This is highlighted by the DOCK2 and DOCK8 deficiencies leading to actinopathies and immune deficiencies. DOCK8 and DOCK11 activate CDC42, a Rho-guanosine triphosphate hydrolases involved in actin cytoskeleton dynamics, among many cellular functions.

This safety improvement project used quality improvement methods in a Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care facility in Yemen, managed by an international humanitarian non-governmental organisation. It is responsible for about 6500 deliveries per annum. Following a local review of maternal deaths and serious incidents in 2020-2021, care for women with severe hypertensive disease in pregnancy and postpartum haemorrhage were highlighted as potential areas for improvement.

Infant Shoshin beriberi is an acute life-threatening condition for which the diagnosis is frequently delayed. Therefore, rapid recognition of right heart failure with lactic acidemia is a crucial element in the diagnosis and therapeutic management. We present the case of a 2-month-old girl with bronchiolitis, right heart failure, and lactic acidosis, who quickly and favorably responded to thiamine supplementation.
