Background: The characteristics and outcomes of adult patients with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection who require ICU admission are poorly defined. Although several studies in adults with RSV infection have been published in recent years, they did not focus specifically on patients with critical illness.

Research Question: What are the characteristics and outcomes of adult patients in the ICU with RSV infection and how do they compare with those of patients in the ICU with influenza infection?

Study Design And Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study in France and Belgium (17 sites) compared the characteristics and outcomes of adult patients in the ICU with RSV infection vs those with influenza infection between November 2011 and April 2018.

Patients with viral respiratory infections often present symptoms compatible with bloodstream infections. Consequently, the winter period commonly associated with epidemic respiratory illnesses shows an increase in the number of blood cultures (BC) and to occasional saturation of automated BC systems. Here, we explored the seasonal variations in BC samples and the potential impact of shortening the incubation time of BC when automated BC systems are close to saturation.

Background: Anti-synthetase (AS) and dermato-pulmonary associated with anti-MDA-5 antibodies (aMDA-5) syndromes are near one of the other autoimmune inflammatory myopathies potentially responsible for severe acute interstitial lung disease. We undertook a 13-year retrospective multicenter study in 35 French ICUs in order to describe the clinical presentation and the outcome of patients admitted to the ICU for acute respiratory failure (ARF) revealing AS or aMDA-5 syndromes.

Results: From 2005 to 2017, 47 patients (23 males; median age 60 [1st-3rd quartiles 52-69] years, no comorbidity 85%) were admitted to the ICU for ARF revealing AS (n = 28, 60%) or aMDA-5 (n = 19, 40%) syndromes.

Service de réanimation Médicale, Groupe de Recherche CARMAS, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Henri Mondor, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, 51, avenue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, Créteil, 94010, France.

Background: The lack of a patent source of infection after 24 hours of management of shock considered septic is a common and disturbing scenario. We aimed to determine the prevalence and the causes of shock with no diagnosis 24 hours after its onset, and to compare the outcomes of patients with early-confirmed septic shock to those of others.

Methods: We conducted a pragmatic, prospective, multicenter observational cohort study in ten intensive care units (ICU) in France.

[Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis: A report of two familial cases].

Rev Med Interne

November 2016

Service de médecine interne et de maladies infectieuses, centre hospitalier Robert-Ballanger, 1, boulevard Robert-Ballanger, 93602 Aulnay-sous-Bois cedex, France.

Introduction: The histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease is characterized by a lymph node inflammation whose similarity with systemic lupus is generally admitted.

Case Report: Our description of two familial cases aims at raising the hypothesis of the existence of a genetic background in this disease following the example of what is observed in the autoimmune diseases.

Conclusion: Pathophysiology of Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease is probably multifactorial and may include predisposing genetic background and a possible infectious triggering event.

Electronic address:

Purpose: The reconstruction of lower eyelid defects is a complex issue because of the thinness of eyelid tissues and the need for protection of the globe. The surgery must address two requirements: a functional goal, avoiding eyelid malposition, and a cosmetic goal, limiting aesthetic compromises. In young patients, direct closure is rarely possible if the defect is superior to 1cm.

[An adjustable distractor for transverse maxillary distraction osteogenesis].

June 2013

Chirurgie maxillo-faciale et stomatologie, service de chirurgie plastique, reconstructrice et esthétique, centre hospitalier Robert-Ballanger, boulevard Robert-Ballanger, 93602 Aulnay-sous-Bois cedex, France.

Introduction: The posterior skeletal widening in conventional distractions (Surgical Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion) is often modest, in contrast with a predominant anterior expansion. Until recently, it was not possible to consider transverse palatal distraction osteogenesis and Le Fort I impaction or advancement in the same procedure, as the osteosynthesis plates impeded maxillary anterior opening. We developed new sliding osteosynthesis plates allowing to perform an advancement or impaction Le Fort I osteotomy associated with a low-resistance bipartite palatal distraction osteogenesis.

Ann Chir Plast Esthet

August 2014

Service de chirurgie plastique et maxillofaciale, centre hospitalier Robert-Ballanger, boulevard Ballanger, 93600 Aulnay-sous-Bois, France.

Introduction: The maxillo-mandibulary dysphormias are frequently associated with morphological abnormalities of the chin. Their correction in the sagittal and transverse planes can benefit both morphologically and functionally. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphological benefit of the osseous genioplasty associated with orthognathic surgery depending on the type of technique used, as well as complications occurred.

Thoracic infections due to Trichomonas species often go unrecognised as they are seldom described in the literature. We describe a case that, to our knowledge, is the first reported case of empyema caused by this organism. A 59 year old man with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung developed a right pyopneumothorax following treatment with corticosteroids and radiotherapy.
