Background: Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) affects millions of people, and is an essential component of the long-term impact of COVID-19 during the post-pandemic era. Yet, consensus on clinical case definition and core components of PCC remains lacking, affecting our ability to inform research and evidence-based management. Our study aims 1) to identify the most specific symptoms for PCC, and identify clinical subtypes; 2) to evaluate both virus- and host-related determinants of PCC, and 3) assess the impact of PCC on physical and mental health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to find biomarkers in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) that can predict adverse outcomes and help monitor disease progression over time.
  • Researchers used data from two groups of IPF patients and analyzed CT imaging biomarkers to assess disease severity and their relationship with lung function and survival.
  • The weighted reticulovascular score (WRVS) showed significant potential as a predictive tool, with a baseline score of ≥15% indicating a higher risk of mortality and an increase of 3% in WRVS correlating with reduced survival, surpassing traditional visual assessments of fibrosis.

Sclerostin inhibitors protect against osteoporotic fractures, but their cardiovascular safety remains unclear. We conducted a cis-Mendelian randomisation analysis to estimate the causal effect of sclerostin levels on cardiovascular risk factors. We meta-analysed three GWAS of sclerostin levels including 49,568 Europeans and selected 2 SNPs to be used as instruments.

December 2024

Fundació Institut Universitari per a la recerca a l'Atenció Primària de Salut Jordi Gol i Gurina (IDIAPJGol), Barcelona, Spain; Department of Medical Informatics, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Residential relocation leads to environmental changes, besides being likely to be influenced by sociodemographic characteristics. The relationship between them is, however, still not well described. We aimed to investigate changes in patterns of urban, natural and physical environmental exposures due to relocation and related sociodemographic determinants in a population-based cohort study of children and adolescents.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of the UK MHRA's March 2019 Risk Minimisation Measures (RMM) on the usage of fluoroquinolones using interrupted time series (ITS) methods.
  • It analyzed monthly and quarterly fluoroquinolone usage data from various healthcare settings between 2012 and 2022, employing segmented regression and ARIMA models to assess changes across different age groups.
  • Results showed significant reductions in fluoroquinolone usage after the RMM implementation across multiple databases, but some statistical issues such as heteroscedasticity and non-normality were observed in hospital-level data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how competing risks, like allograft failure and death with a functioning graft, affect the performance of prognostic models used for kidney transplant recipients.
  • The research involves 11,046 kidney transplant recipients across 10 countries, developing models using various regression techniques to predict long-term graft failure while carefully evaluating their accuracy and reliability.
  • Results indicate that both standard Cox models and competing risk models provide similar predictions for graft failure, with high concordance indices, confirming their usefulness in clinical settings.

  • Women living with HIV (WLHIV) face higher risks of negative pregnancy outcomes compared to HIV-negative women, even when on antiretroviral therapy (ART).
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the perinatal risks among WLHIV using different ART regimens (NNRTI, PI, and INSTI) versus HIV-negative women, analyzing 22 cohort studies involving over 191,000 women.
  • Results showed that WLHIV on NNRTI-based ART had significantly increased risks for several adverse outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birthweight, highlighting the impact of ART types on pregnancy health.

Article Synopsis
  • - The DEBIOC trial explored the safety and efficacy of neoadjuvant treatment using oxaliplatin and capecitabine (Xelox) with or without AZD8931 in patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma, showing moderate safety but limited effectiveness.
  • - Researchers analyzed genetic data from 25 pre-treatment and 18 post-treatment biopsy samples to examine how these treatments influenced biological pathways related to cancer through advanced software tools.
  • - Their findings identified three molecular subgroups linked to immune response, with treatment affecting immune signaling and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, while the addition of AZD8931 promoted a less favorable immunosuppressive environment and common cancer resistance mechanisms.

Exposure to Air Pollutants and Myocardial Infarction Incidence: A UK Biobank Study Exploring Gene-Environment Interaction.

Environ Health Perspect

October 2024

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Environment and Health, and State Key Laboratory of Environmental Health (Incubating), School of Public Health, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on how genetic predisposition and air pollution interact to affect the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in a large population.
  • Using data from over 456,000 UK Biobank participants, researchers found that chronic exposure to air pollutants significantly increases the risk of MI, with specific hazard ratios indicating heightened susceptibility.
  • The findings suggest that individuals with both a high genetic risk and high pollution exposure face the greatest likelihood of developing MI, highlighting crucial gene-environment interactions that call for further investigation in disease prevention strategies.

Background: Scientific publications have been growing exponentially, contributing to an oversaturated information environment. Quantifying a research output's impact and reach cannot be solely measured by traditional metrics like citation counts as these have a lag time and are largely focused on an academic audience. There is increasing recognition to consider 'alternative metrics' or altmetrics to measure more immediate and broader impacts of research.

  • Researchers used a matched cohort design with over 31,000 patients each for those with frozen shoulder and without, while excluding those with prior diabetes.
  • Results indicated that individuals with frozen shoulder had a significantly higher likelihood of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, suggesting the need for further investigation into screening practices for patients with frozen shoulder.

Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Statistics (CRESS), Université Paris Cité and Université Sorbonne Paris Nord, Inserm, INRAE, Paris, F-75004, France; Department of General practice, Université Paris Cité, F-75014, Paris, France; Centre d'Epidémiologie Clinique, AP-HP, Hôpital Hôtel Dieu, F-75004, Paris, France.

Objectives: Visual abstracts (VAs) lack study-specific reporting guidelines and are increasingly used as stand-alone sources in medical research dissemination although not designed for this purpose. Therefore, our objectives were to describe 1) completeness of reporting in VAs and corresponding written abstracts (WAs) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 2) the extent and type of spin (ie, any reporting pattern that could distort result interpretation and mislead readers) in VAs and WAs of RCTs with a statistically nonsignificant primary outcome.

Study Design And Setting: We conducted a cross-sectional study evaluating VAs and WAs of RCTs published between January 1, 2021, and March 3, 2023.
