The issue of assessing the effectiveness of health technologies (drugs, devices, etc.) through observational studies is becoming increasingly important as registration and market access agencies consider them in their evaluation process. In this context, observational studies must be able to provide real demonstrations of a level of reliability comparable to those produced by the conventional randomized controlled trial (RCT) approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgeons can enhance patient safety by monitoring surgical outcomes using statistical process control tools, which have adapted from the manufacturing industry to healthcare.
  • * Identifying the right tool is essential; an observed minus expected (O-E) chart is easy to use but may lack depth, while a cumulative sum (CUSUM) method is more complex and requires statistical training.
  • * A new risk-adjusted O-E CUSUM chart combines the ease of the O-E chart with the detailed analysis of CUSUM, allowing surgeons to track outcomes effectively and make data-driven improvements to patient safety.

Background: Very preterm birth (<32 weeks gestation, VP), immigrant background, and language barriers are all independently associated with a high risk for mental health problems in childhood, but research has neglected the long-term development of immigrant children born VP. We assessed whether behavioural and socio-emotional problems of 5-year-old children born VP growing up across different language contexts in the European Union are associated with an immigrant background and linguistic distance of families' mother tongue (L1) to the host countries' official languages.

Methods: Data are from a population-based cohort including all VP births in 2011/12 in 11 European countries; a total of 3,067 children were followed up at 2 and 5 years of age.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated how the antioxidant capacity and inflammation potential of maternal diets during the last three months of pregnancy could influence the risk of allergic and respiratory diseases in children.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 9,679 mother-child pairs, measuring the dietary antioxidant capacity and inflammatory potential using various indices.
  • Results indicated that a diet high in antioxidants was linked to a lower risk of 'early wheeze without asthma,' while a pro-inflammatory diet correlated with a higher risk of 'asthma only,' suggesting maternal diet impacts children's respiratory health to some extent.

Centre Des Sciences Du Goût Et de L' Alimentation, CNRS, INRAE, Institut Agro, Université Bourgogne, 17 Rue Sully, Dijon Cedex, 21065, France.

Background: While complementary feeding can be challenging, little emphasis has been placed on the introduction to food texture/pieces, especially in terms of neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aims to determine the association between the timing of introduction to food pieces during infancy and neurodevelopment in early childhood. We hypothesized that late introduction to food texture/pieces relates to unfavorable neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Twin pregnancies and prior cesarean delivery can lead to risks in vaginal delivery, particularly postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
  • A study analyzed the delivery methods and PPH rates in women with twin pregnancies and one previous cesarean, finding no significant difference in PPH risk between those opting for vaginal versus cesarean delivery.
  • Ultimately, the research concluded that the chosen mode of delivery does not significantly impact the likelihood of postpartum hemorrhage in this patient group.

Background: Childhood obesity is a crucial public health issue. Early childhood is a critical time to foster the establishment of healthy eating behaviours and growth, which are partly shaped by parental feeding practices. To inform French parents of the recently updated national complementary feeding guidelines for 0-3 years (in terms of nutrition and responsive feeding as a mean to encourage infant appetite control skills and promote healthy growth), an official printed brochure was developed and nationally disseminated in 2021 by the French public health agency, Santé publique France.

Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Statistics (CRESS), Université Paris Cité and Université Sorbonne Paris Nord, Inserm, INRAE, Paris, F-75004, France; Department of General practice, Université Paris Cité, F-75014, Paris, France; Centre d'Epidémiologie Clinique, AP-HP, Hôpital Hôtel Dieu, F-75004, Paris, France.

Objectives: Visual abstracts (VAs) lack study-specific reporting guidelines and are increasingly used as stand-alone sources in medical research dissemination although not designed for this purpose. Therefore, our objectives were to describe 1) completeness of reporting in VAs and corresponding written abstracts (WAs) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 2) the extent and type of spin (ie, any reporting pattern that could distort result interpretation and mislead readers) in VAs and WAs of RCTs with a statistically nonsignificant primary outcome.

Study Design And Setting: We conducted a cross-sectional study evaluating VAs and WAs of RCTs published between January 1, 2021, and March 3, 2023.

Maternal social deprivation and preterm birth: The PreCARE cohort study.

Paediatr Perinat Epidemiol

September 2024

Obstetrical Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiology Research Team (EPOPé), Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Statistics (CRESS), Inserm, INRAE, Université Paris Cité, Paris, France.

Background: Maternal exposure to unfavourable social conditions is associated with a higher rate of perinatal complications, such as placental vascular pathologies. A higher risk of preterm birth (PTB) has also been reported, and variations across studies and settings suggest that different patterns may be involved in this association.

Objective: To assess the association between maternal social deprivation and PTB (overall and by phenotype).

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined how physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep—collectively known as 24-h movement behaviors—affect cognitive development in children, specifically focusing on executive function and academic performance.
  • The research involved 432 children in Singapore aged 5.5 to 9 years, using wrist-worn accelerometers to accurately measure their movement behaviors and various cognitive assessments to gauge outcomes.
  • Findings revealed that while overall 24-h movement behaviors didn't link to cognitive performance, reallocating time from moderate-to-vigorous physical activity to sleep improved academic achievement scores.

Sorbonne Université, INSERM, Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique (IPLESP), Equipe de Recherche en Epidémiologie Sociale (ERES), 75012, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Postpartum depression and depressive symptoms have a major impact on maternal and infant health and well-being, yet to date their aetiology remains unclear. One hypothesis suggests a link between these symptoms and variations in prenatal cortisol levels, but existing evidence is limited and inconclusive. This study aims to provide additional evidence to disentangle the relationship between prenatal cortisol concentrations and subsequent occurrence of postpartum depressive symptoms.
