Objective: : This study aimed to investigate the influence of protocatechuic acid (PCA) on learning, memory, and central nervous system (CNS) neuromodulators in healthy rats, to analyse whether the procognitive effects of PCA found in animal models of memory impairment and described in the literature occur in healthy individuals.
Methods: : PCA was administered for 48 days at doses of 50 or 100 mg/kg body weight. The cognitive performance was analysed in behavioural tests (open field, novel object recognition, water maze).

We investigated Toll-like receptor (TLR)-3/-7/-8/-9 and interferon (IFN)-α/β/γ mRNA expression in whole blood and serum IFN-α/β/γ levels in patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis (SSc) and in healthy subjects to assess the association between the TLR-IFN expression and severity of and susceptibility to diseases, and identify potential biomarkers. Expression of the IFN-γ, TLR-3 and TLR-8 was detected only in SLE patients. TLR-7, IFN-α and IFN-β expression was highest in SLE, while TLR-9 expression was highest in SSc patients.

Objective: To assess the usefulness of skin surface infrared thermography (SSIT) as a prognostic tool in the treatment of stages III and IV pressure ulcers (PU), with hydrocolloid/hydrogel dressings plus 20 exposures to low-level laser therapy (LLLT), compared with hydrocolloid dressings alone, in a group of long-term bedbound care patients.
Method: In this comparative study, participants were randomly assigned to group I: PUs treated with specialist wound dressings and laser therapy, or to group II: PUs treated with specialist wound dressings without laser therapy. Thermal imaging sessions were carried out at the beginning of the study, and after two and four weeks of treatment.

Background: Fulminant cardiac involvement in COVID-19 patients has been reported; the underlying suspected mechanisms include myocarditis, arrhythmia, and cardiac tamponade. In parallel, atrial fibrillation is common in the elderly population which is at particularly high risk for COVID-19 morbidity and mortality.
Case Summary: A 72-year-old male SARS-CoV2-positive patient was admitted to the intensive care unit due to delirium and acute respiratory failure.

Aims: The aim of this study is to analyse the causes of cardiac arrests (CA) in the emergency departments (ED) in the United States and their clinical outcomes according to whether they had a primary or a secondary diagnosis of CA.
Methods: Data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample was assessed for episodes of CA in the emergency department (ED) for adults from 2006 to 2014. Primary and secondary diagnoses of CA and mortality outcomes were evaluated in ED, inpatient and the combined in-hospital setting.

Background: The interleukin-6 (IL-6) pathway has a crucial role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, the main cause of cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to characterize the predictive value of inflammatory biomarkers on long-term cardiovascular mortality in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods: This prospective observational study included 322 consecutive patients with ACS undergoing PCI.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are associated with growing public and private expenditure on healthcare regardless geographic region. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately estimate the overall societal costs-both direct and indirect expenses from the perspective of patients, caregivers and employers.
Research Design: The aim of this paper is to determine the direct and indirect costs related to cardiovascular diseases in Poland from 2015 to 2017.

Background: In Poland drug programmes developed by the Minister of Health and financed by the National Health Fund are special reimbursement frameworks of innovative, expensive, and mostly hospital based medical products used for a small number of patients.
Research Design: The research presented in this paper is based on data analysis published by the National Health Fund in Poland. The analysis focused on estimating public payer expenditure on drugs available within drug programmes from 2015 to 2018.

Objective: Hemophilic arthropathy is characterized by recurrent bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia leading to irreversible joint degeneration. The involvement of CX3CL1 (fractalkine) and its receptor CX3CR1 was observed in the pathogenesis of numerous arthritis-associated diseases. Taking this into account, we have presented a study investigating the role of the CX3CL1/CX3XR1 axis in the course of hemophilic arthropathy, including the CX3CL1-dependent expression of CD56, CD68, and CD31 cells along with evaluation of articular cartilage and synovial membrane morphology.

Purpose: The prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease is rising, in part due to increase in the medium age of residents in developed countries. The aim of the study has been to determine whether resveratrol (RSV) can be effective in the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, providing its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and SIRT1-activating properties.
Methods: A systematic review of some experimental and clinical studies has been made.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (-3 acids, PUFAs) are essential components of cell membranes in all mammals. A multifactorial beneficial influence of -3 fatty acids on the health of humans and other mammals has been observed for many years. Therefore, -3 fatty acids and their function in the prophylaxis and treatment of various pathologies have been subjected to numerous studies.

Selection of the optimal peri- and postprocedural antithrombotic regimen in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a common clinical problem which may pose a challenge to medical practitioners. This systematic review summarizes the updated evidence on this topic. Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) at standard doses are the preferred option in most of post PCI patients with AF, except those few with a clear indication for a vitamin K antagonist (VKA).

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes a critical cell regulatory protein, huntingtin (Htt). The expansion of cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) trinucleotide repeats causes improper folding of functional proteins and is an initial trigger of pathological changes in the brain. Recent research has indicated that the functional dysregulation of many transcription factors underlies the neurodegenerative processes that accompany HD.

Background: Data on the relationship between body mass index (BMI), thromboembolic events (TEE) and bleeding in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) are controversial, and further evidence on the risk of such events in obese patients with AF receiving different anticoagulant therapies (OAC) is needed.
Methods And Results: We divided a total of 9330 participants from the prospective PREFER in AF and PREFER in AF PROLONGATION registries into BMI quartiles at baseline. Outcome measures were TEE and major bleeding complications at the 1-year follow-up.

Aims: Concomitant secondary atrioventricular regurgitation is frequent in patients with severe aortic stenosis scheduled for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The future implications of leaving associated valve lesions untreated after TAVR remain unknown. Aim of the present study was to characterize the evolution of concomitant secondary atrioventricular regurgitations and to evaluate their impact on long-term prognosis.

Antiplatelet response to clopidogrel shows wide variation, and poor response is correlated with adverse clinical outcomes. CYP2C19 loss-of-function alleles play an important role in this response, but account for only a small proportion of variability in response to clopidogrel. An aim of the International Clopidogrel Pharmacogenomics Consortium (ICPC) is to identify other genetic determinants of clopidogrel pharmacodynamics and clinical response.
