The aim of the study was to assess appetitive responses and central dopaminergic neurotransmission in passive and active rats divided according to their immobility time in the Porsolt swim test and exposed to restraint stress. Passive rats had more episodes of appetitive 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalization (USV) during rat encounter after social isolation and spent significantly more time in the amphetamine-associated context in conditioned place preference test, compared to active rats. Restraint stress decreased sucrose preference, but increased appetitive vocalization and reinforced the conditioned place preference only in passive animals that was associated with increased dopamine concentration in the amygdala.

This study aimed to test the hypothesis that high-anxiety (HR) rats are more sensitive to the effects of chronic corticosterone administration and antalarmin (corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) receptor 1, CRF antagonist) injections than low-anxiety (LR) rats, and this effect is accompanied by changes in CRF system activity in brain regions involved in the control of emotions and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Male rats were divided into LR (n = 25) and HR (n = 30) groups according to the duration of conditioned freezing in a contextual fear test. Chronic corticosterone administration (by injection, 20 mg/kg) for 21 d (except weekends) increased freezing duration and number of GR (glucocorticoid receptor)-immunoreactive nuclei in the basal amygdala (BA) and decreased GR-immunoreactive nuclei in the infralimbic cortex (IL), dentate gyrus (DG), and CA3 area, only in the HR group.

Royal Jelly (RJ) is a unique substance obtained from bees that has been used widely in European and Asian traditional medicine for its potential to prevent signs of aging through its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hypercholesterolemic properties. We recently reported an enhancement in spatial memory along with changes in monoaminergic transmission in aged rats after chronic RJ administration. Here, we aim to further explore the action of RJ on central nervous system activity by examining levels of amino acids in selected brain structures of aged male Wistar rats following 2-months of Greek RJ administration.

Novel antiplatelet drugs, including ticagrelor, are being successively introduced into the therapy of atherothrombotic conditions due to their superiority over a standard combination of clopidogrel with acetylsalicylic acid in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). A P2Y12 receptor antagonist, ticagrelor, is unique among antiplatelet drugs, because ticagrelor inhibits the platelet P2Y12 receptor in a reversible manner, and because it demonstrates a wide palette of advantageous pleiotropic effects associated with the increased concentration of adenosine. The pleiotropic effects of ticagrelor comprise cardioprotection, restoration of the myocardium after an ischemic event, promotion of the release of anticoagulative factors and, eventually, anti-inflammatory effects.

Methods: The aim of our study was to analyse the hippocampal changes in the expression of GABA-A receptor subunits involved in phasic (α1, γ2) or tonic (α4 and δ) inhibition in rats subjected to the PTZ kindling using immunohistochemistry method as well as in animals subjected to a single injection of a subconvulsive (30mg/kg) or convulsive (55mg/kg) dose of PTZ.

Hemophilic arthropathy (HA) is one of the most common and typical manifestation in the course of recurrent bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia. Clinical and subclinical joint bleeding episodes gradually lead to irreversible changes manifesting themselves as pain, progressing ankylosis, marked limitation of the range of motion, muscle atrophy and osteoporosis commonly concomitant with joint deformity resulting from chronic proliferative synovitis and both cartilage and bone degeneration leading to the final functional impairment of the joint. In spite of numerous studies, the pathophysiology of HA has not been fully elucidated, especially as regards immunopathological mechanisms which are associated with the subclinical and early stage of the disease and to be more precise, with chronic joint inflammation.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the correlations between the expression of glucose transporters GLUT-1, GLUT-4, and GLUT-9 in human term placenta and selected maternal and fetal parameters in pregnancies complicated by diabetes mellitus (DM).

Materials And Methods: Placental samples were obtained from healthy control (n = 25) and diabetic pregnancies, including diet-controlled gestational diabetes mellitus (GDMG1) (n = 16), insulin-controlled gestational diabetes mellitus (GDMG2) (n = 6), and pregestational DM (PGDM) (n = 6). Computer-assisted quantitative morphometry of stained placental sections was performed to determine the expression of selected glucose transporter proteins.
