Epidemiological studies and a recent Mendelian randomization (MR) study have identified an association between low bone mass and an increased risk of scoliosis. Previous research suggests that bone loss in patients with scoliosis may be related to the RANK-RANKL-OPG system. This study is to investigate whether a causal relationship exists between the RANK-RANKL-OPG system and the development of scoliosis.

: The number of seriously injured elderly patients is continuously rising. Several studies have underlined the benefit of orthogeriatric co-management in treating older patients with a proximal femur fracture. The basis of this orthogeriatric co-management is a certification as a Centre for Geriatric Trauma (ATZ).

Background: Restoring medial knee pivot kinematics post-total knee arthroplasty is widely recognized to enhance patient satisfaction. Our study investigates the kinematics of patients who received posterior stabilized implants via robotic-arm assisted surgery, specifically analyzing effects of implant alignment and soft tissue balance on pivot location.
Methods: Twelve high-functioning patients with unilateral posterior stabilizing knee implants underwent CT-guided robotic-arm assisted surgery.

Medial plantar foot pain can have various causes, and the painful Os tibiale externum should be considered in the differential diagnosis. A reliable diagnosis can be made through physical examination and multimodal imaging. We report on a 53-year-old man with severe, load-dependent pain consistent with an accessory navicular syndrome, caused by a pes planovalgus, which consecutively induced focal inflammation and tenosynovitis of the tibialis posterior tendon.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious disease of the central nervous system. Aside from the limited intrinsic regenerative capacity of neurons, complex microenvironmental disturbances can also lead to further cellular damage and growth inhibition. Programmed cell death regulated by pyroptosis has an important role in the pathogenesis of SCI.

Background And Objective: Although paracetamol (acetaminophen) combined with other analgesics can reduce pain intensity in some pain conditions, its effectiveness in managing low back pain and osteoarthritis is unclear. This systematic review investigated whether paracetamol combination therapy is more effective and safer than monotherapy or placebo in low back pain and osteoarthritis.
Methods: Online database searches were conducted for randomised trials that evaluated paracetamol combined with another analgesic compared to a placebo or the non-paracetamol ingredient in the combination (monotherapy) in low back pain and osteoarthritis.

Antibiotic-loaded PMMA bone cement is frequently used in modern trauma and orthopedic surgery. Although many of the antibiotics routinely applied are described to have cytotoxic effects in the literature, clinical experience shows no adverse effects for bone healing. To determine the effects of antibiotic-loaded PMMA spacers on osteogenesis in vitro, we cultivated human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-hMSCs) in the presence of PMMA spacers containing Gentamicin, Vancomycin, Gentamicin + Clindamycin as well as Gentamicin + Vancomycin in addition to a blank control (agarose) and PMMA containing no antibiotics.

Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is an osteolytic tumor driven by an -mutated mononuclear cell with the accumulation of osteoclastic giant cells. We analyzed tissue from 13 patients with recurrence and 25 patients with denosumab therapy, including two cases of malignant transformation. We found a decrease in the total number of cells ( = 0.

Introduction: The rationale for the use of mini-implants for partial resurfacing in the treatment of femoral chondral and osteochondral lesions is still under debate. The evidence supporting best practise guidelines is based on studies with low-level evidence. A consensus group of experts was convened to collaboratively advance towards consensus opinions regarding the best available evidence.

Macrophage/microglia polarization acts as an important part in regulating inflammatory responses in spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the regulation of inflammation of Schwann cell-derived exosomes (SCDEs) for SCI repair is still unclear. Therefore, we intend to find out the effect of SCDEs on regulating the inflammation related to macrophage polarization during the recovery of SCI.

The fracture of the femoral component is a rare complication of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This article presents a case in which a 70-year-old man underwent a left press-fit Advance Medial-Pivot Knee System TKA (MicroPort Orthopedics, Arlington, TN) in 2000. Twenty years later, he experienced a nontraumatic onset of knee pain after standing up from a lunge position.

Purpose: To examine the relationship between superficial lesions (such as bruises, hematomas, deep abrasions, and soft tissue emphysema) and internal post-traumatic injuries, assessed using whole-body computed tomography (WBCT), and to determine if these are valid markers for internal injuries.
Methods And Materials: 250 patients who underwent WBCT emergency scans for suspected polytrauma were retrospectively analyzed after institutional review board approval of the study. The scans were carried out on patients who met the criteria for standard operating procedures for WBCT emergency scans.

Introduction: Non-union of a long bone fracture remains a challenge in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. In the current study, we sought to determine the clinical effectiveness of tibial non-union treatment utilizing an antibiotic-coated intramedullary nail (Expert Tibia Nail (ETN) PROtect®) regarding prevention and treatment of infection and the clinical outcome.
Patients And Methods: 36 patients suffering from tibial non-unions that were treated with the ETN PROtect® in the course of non-union treatment between February 2010 and March 2015 were included in this clinical observational study.

Background: There is evidence that femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is increasingly prevalent among adolescent athletes. Abnormal contact forces across the hip and alterations in bony morphology characteristic of FAI may be especially detrimental in this group, given their young age and active lifestyle.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the findings, outcomes, and return to sport percentage among adolescent athletes with FAI treated with hip arthroscopy.

Freiberg disease is characterized as osteochondrosis of the second metatarsal head. It is the fourth most common form of primary osteochondrosis with a significant predilection to the adolescent athletic female population, although it has been seen over a wide age range. If treated early, osteochondroses such as Freiberg disease are essentially self-limiting, often resolving with nonoperative management.

Purpose: To compare the patient-reported outcomes scores (PROs) of patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, and complete ligamentum teres (LT) tears to a matched-pair control group with intact LTs, as well as to report the relative risk of total hip arthroplasty (THA) conversion.
Methods: Data between February 2008 and April 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients undergoing hip arthroscopy included those who had complete LT tear, labral tears, FAI, and minimum 2-year follow-up with modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), Non-arthritic Hip Score (NAHS), Hip Outcome Score-Sports Specific Subscale (HOS-SSS), International Hip Outcome Tool-12 (iHOT-12), and visual analog scale (VAS).

Background: Products from metal wear have been identified as a potential cause of adverse local tissue reactions and implant failure in total hip arthroplasty. However, the role of metal ion exposure in patients after total shoulder replacement is unclear. The objective of the present study was to determine in vivo blood metal ion levels of cobalt, chromium, and titanium in patients after anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) or reverse TSA.

Although recognized as the most well-trained providers to address musculoskeletal injuries, many orthopaedic surgeons do not routinely treat patients with nonmusculoskeletal issues in their clinical practice. Nonetheless, when serving as a team physician, an orthopaedic surgeon may need to initiate management of or manage many nonmusculoskeletal issues. Knowing how to accurately diagnose and initiate management of sports-related medical and surgical conditions is an important facet of being an orthopaedic team physician.
