A Non-healing infected wound is an ever-growing global epidemic, with increasing burden of mortality rates and management costs. The problems of chronic wound infections and their outcomes will continue as long as their underlying causes like diabetic wounds grow and spread. Commercial wound therapies employed have limited potential that inhibits pivotal functions and tissue re-epithelialization properties resulting in wound infections.

Institute of Health Sciences, Presidency University, Canal Bank Rd, DG Block, Action Area 1D, New Town, Kolkata, West Bengal, 700156, India. Electronic address:

Microplastics are a recent entrant in the list of environmental pollutants, exhibiting great diversity owing to different sizes, surface charges, and morphologies. The present study explores the impact of varied size, surface functionalization, and concentration of polystyrene microplastics (PS MP) on plants. For this study, Cicer seedlings were exposed to two different sizes of PS (1 μm and 12 μm) with three different surface functionalization (plain, carboxylated, and aminated) and at three distinct concentrations (10, 50, and 100 mg/L).

Multi-Step Biomass Fractionation of Grape Seeds from Pomace, a Zero-Waste Approach.

Plants (Basel)

October 2022

Centre d'Analyses et de Recherche, Unité de Recherche Technologies et Valorisation Agro-Alimentaire, Faculté des Sciences, Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth, Riad El Solh, P.O. Box 17-5208, Beirut 1104 2020, Lebanon.

Grape seeds are the wineries' main by-products, and their disposal causes ecological and environmental problems. In this study seeds from the pomace waste of autochthonous grape varieties from Lebanon, Obeidi (white variety) and Asswad Karech (red variety) were used for a multi-step biomass fractionation. For the first step, a lipid extraction was performed, and the obtained yield was 12.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a predominant chronic metabolic syndrome, resulting in various complications and high mortality associated with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Approximately 15-30% of diabetic patients suffer from DFUs, which is expected to increase annually. The major challenges in treating DFUs are associated with wound infections, alterations to inflammatory responses, angiogenesis and lack of extracellular matrix (ECM) components.

In the present study, a systematic investigation has been carried out for the first time to assess the potential of three different shapes of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), nanorods (AuNRs), nanotriangles (AuNTs), and nanospheres (AuNSs), to develop a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme-mediated etching-based plasmonic ELISA (p-ELISA) strategy. The etching of the AuNPs in ELISA is achieved by 3'-3-5'-5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), which is produced by the biocatalytic conversion of chromogenic TMB HRP. All three types of AuNPs were interacted with varying concentrations of TMB (7-131 μM) (product of HRP enzyme reaction) and characterized for visible color change and by UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

The study emphasizes the application of gold nanorods (GNRs) with different aspect ratios (ARs) for the development of multiplex assay for oral cancer detection. The tunable optical properties of the GNRs that rely on the geometrical alterations of the nanostructure and the corresponding change in the refractive indices of the local environment form the basis of the label-free biosensing mechanism. In the present work, two GNRs with AR 2.

Globally, oral cancer kills an estimated 150,000 individuals per year, with 300,000 new cases being diagnosed annually. The high incidence rate of oral cancer among the South-Asian and American populations is majorly due to overuse of tobacco, alcohol, and poor dental hygiene. Additionally, socio-economic issues and lack of general awareness delay the primary screening of the disease.
