Centralising soft tissue sarcoma (STS) treatment in expert centres and implementing comprehensive therapy concepts through interdisciplinary tumour boards (ITB) has led to significant treatment progress. However, our knowledge on the implementation of the ITB recommendations and its impact on patient outcome is limited. In this retrospective analysis, we examined a cohort of 222 adult patients (pts) with primary STS who were presented to the ITB of the Charité Comprehensive Cancer Centre between 2015 and 2020.

Infection by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has become one of the biggest threats to public health worldwide. One reason for the difficulty in treatment is the lack of proper delivery strategies into MDR bacterial biofilms, where the thick extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) layer impedes the penetration of antibiotics and nanoparticles. Here, we propose a novel bioactive nanoconjugate of drug-loaded liposomes and bacteriophages for targeted eradication of the MDR biofilms in orthopedic infections.

Aims: There is little information in the literature about the use of dual-mobility (DM) bearings in preventing re-dislocation in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). The aim of this study was to compare the use of DM bearings, standard bearings, and constrained liners in revision THA for recurrent dislocation, and to identify risk factors for re-dislocation.
Methods: We reviewed 86 consecutive revision THAs performed for dislocation between August 2012 and July 2019.

Introduction: Patients undergoing revision total hip surgery (RTHS) have a high prevalence of mild and moderate preoperative anemia, associated with adverse outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of perioperative allogeneic blood transfusions (ABT) and postoperative complications in preoperatively mild compared to moderate anemic patients undergoing RTHS who did not receive a diagnostic anemia workup and treatment before surgery.
Methods: We included 1,765 patients between 2007 and 2019 at a university hospital.

Purpose: A total of 894 hips were evaluated to describe the survivorship of Exeter cemented femoral stems and report the outcomes and complications of our 'Exeter- era', and there is no study from Central or Eastern Europe demonstrating similar results.
Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2009, a total of 894 hips were included who underwent Exeter universal and V40 femoral stems with a mean follow up of 13 years. Cemented Exeter low profile polyethylene cups were used in 889 patients (99.

Aims: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may provoke ankle symptoms. The aim of this study was to validate the impact of the preoperative mechanical tibiofemoral angle (mTFA), the talar tilt (TT) on ankle symptoms after TKA, and assess changes in the range of motion (ROM) of the subtalar joint, foot posture, and ankle laxity.
Methods: Patients who underwent TKA from September 2020 to September 2021 were prospectively included.

Background: The femoral neck system (FNS) was introduced as a minimally invasive fixation device for managing femoral neck fractures.
Objective: To compare radiographic, clinical, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of femoral neck fracture patients following FNS compared to dynamic hip screw (DHS) implantation combined with an anti-rotational screw.
Methods: Patients who underwent closed reduction and internal fixation of a femoral neck fracture between 2020 and 2022 were retrospectively included.

Background And Purpose: The study compares early outcomes after simultaneous and staged knee arthroplasty in patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA) to evaluate whether simultaneous bilateral TKA shows comparable early outcomes and complication rates to staged bilateral TKA.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study including all patients scheduled for primary TKA for bilateral knee OA (n = 127) was conducted. Patients received either simultaneous (n = 53, 41.

Background And Purpose: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the commonest reason for revision after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We assessed the risk factors for revision due to PJI following TKA based on the Finnish Arthroplasty Register (FAR).
Patients And Methods: We analyzed 62,087 primary condylar TKAs registered between June 2014 and February 2020 with revision for PJI as the endpoint.

Sarcoma treatment requires a high level of expertise due to its rarity and heterogeneity. Sarcoma patients should, therefore, be referred to an expert centre as early as possible to ensure optimal treatment. Numerous studies have been carried out to provide evidence for this strategy.

Purpose: Prognosis of sarcoma patients is improving, with a better understanding of sarcomagenesis revealing novel therapeutic targets. However, aggressive chemotherapy remains an essential part of treatment, bearing the risk of severe side effects that require intensive medical treatment. Available data on the characteristics and clinical outcome of sarcoma patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) are sparse.

In the last decades total hip arthroplasty (THA) has become a standard procedure with many benefits but also a few still unsolved complications, which can lead to surgical revision in 19-23% of cases. Thus, aseptic loosening and metal hypersensitivity remain challenges. The phenomenon of wear debris causes chronic inflammation, which produces osteolysis and aseptic loosening.

A single-centre retrospective case-control study was undertaken on patients undergoing PSF for spinal fractures. Cannulated screw fixation was compared with solid screw fixation.

Background And Purpose: Long-term outcome of small head (28 mm) metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) is available mainly for Metasul devices (Sulzer Medica, Winterthur, Switzerland). Biomet MoM THA was frequently used in Finland. Therefore, we assessed long-term survivorship of the M2a 28-mm RingLoc MoM THA (Biomet, Warsaw, IN, USA) and compared it with the metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) RingLoc THA from the same manufacturer.

Background: Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of rare malignant tumors with more than 100 subtypes. Accurate diagnosis remains challenging due to a lack of characteristic molecular or histomorphological hallmarks. A DNA methylation-based tumor profiling classifier for sarcomas (known as sarcoma classifier) from the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum) is now employed in selected cases to guide tumor classification and treatment decisions at our institution.

A central element of modern sarcoma therapy is complete surgical tumor resection with an adequate safety margin, embedded in an interdisciplinary multimodal therapy concept. Along with ensuring patient survival, functional limb preservation is an important goal for sarcomas of the extremities. This review provides an overview of the relevant literature on indications and goals of reconstructive options, the scope and contribution of microsurgical reconstructive procedures, and the associated interdisciplinary decision making and workup.

Background: The impact of the prior fixation mode on the treatment outcome of chronic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the hip is unclear. Removal of cemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) is particularly challenging and residual cement might be associated with reinfection. This study seeks to compare the results of two-stage revision for PJI in cemented and cementless THA.

State-of-the-art treatment of root canal infection includes the use of mechanical debridement and chemical agents. This disinfection method is limited, and microorganisms can remain in the canal system. appears with a high prevalence in secondary and persistent root canal infections and can be linked to endodontic treatment failure due to its various resistance mechanisms.

Background: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) represent a diverse group of rare malignant tumors. Currently, five to six weeks of preoperative radiotherapy (RT) combined with surgery constitute the mainstay of therapy for localized high-grade sarcomas (G2-G3). Growing evidence suggests that shortening preoperative RT courses by hypofractionation neither increases toxicity rates nor impairs oncological outcomes.
