A Divergence-Based Approach for the Identification of Atrial Fibrillation Focal Drivers From Multipolar Mapping: A Computational Study.

The expanding role of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) has stimulated the development of novel mapping strategies to guide the procedure. We introduce a novel approach to characterize wave propagation and identify AF focal drivers from multipolar mapping data. The method reconstructs continuous activation patterns in the mapping area by a radial basis function (RBF) interpolation of multisite activation time series.

Structural and functional brain networks of individual differences in trait anger and anger control: An unsupervised machine learning study.

The ability to experience, use and eventually control anger is crucial to maintain well-being and build healthy relationships. Despite its relevance, the neural mechanisms behind individual differences in experiencing and controlling anger are poorly understood. To elucidate these points, we employed an unsupervised machine learning approach based on independent component analysis to test the hypothesis that specific functional and structural networks are associated with individual differences in trait anger and anger control.

COVID-19 pandemic containment in the Caribbean Region: A review of case-management and public health strategies.

COVID-19 emerged initially from Wuhan, Hubei province, China, in late December 2019, and since then, it has spread globally to be declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. The Caribbean region started reporting COVID-19 cases in early March 2020, triggering new regional public health crises. The initial suspects and confirmed cases across the Caribbean countries were mainly imported cases and from cruise ships.

Effect of Training With the Hybrid Assistive Limb on Gait Cycle Kinematics After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Introduction: Reportedly, wearable robots, such as the hybrid assistive limb (HAL), are effective in the functional recovery of various locomotor disabilities, including disrupted walking, restricted range of motion, and muscle weakness. However, the effect of walking exercises with a HAL on the kinematic and kinetic variables of lower limb joint function is not yet fully understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of HAL on the kinematic and kinetic variables of lower limb function in patients 5 weeks after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Influence of Visual Stimulation-Induced Passive Reproduction of Motor Images in the Brain on Motor Paralysis After Stroke.

Finger flexor spasticity, which is commonly observed among patients with stroke, disrupts finger extension movement, consequently influencing not only upper limb function in daily life but also the outcomes of upper limb therapeutic exercise. Kinesthetic illusion induced by visual stimulation (KINVIS) has been proposed as a potential treatment for spasticity in patients with stroke. However, it remains unclear whether KINVIS intervention alone could improve finger flexor spasticity and finger extension movements without other intervention modalities.

Expect the Worst! Expectations and Social Interactive Decision Making.

Psychological studies have demonstrated that expectations can have substantial effects on choice behavior, although the role of expectations on social decision making in particular has been relatively unexplored. To broaden our knowledge, we examined the role of expectations on decision making when interacting with new game partners and then also in a subsequent interaction with the same partners. To perform this, 38 participants played an Ultimatum Game (UG) in the role of responders and were primed to expect to play with two different groups of proposers, either those that were relatively fair (a tendency to propose an equal split-the high expectation condition) or unfair (with a history of offering unequal splits-the low expectation condition).

The study was aimed to explore the socio-demographic and educational factors associated with depression, anxiety and stress among health professions' students. Using non-random purposeful sampling, 366 health professions' students studied in 2018/19 were surveyed via a self-reported questionnaire that included Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and questions on sociodemographic and educational characteristics.

Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Liver Fluke-Induced Cholangiocarcinoma.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the second most common type of hepatic cancer. In east and southeast Asia, intrahepatic CCA is caused predominantly by infection of and , two species of parasitic liver flukes. In this review, we present molecular evidence that liver fluke-associated CCAs have enhanced features of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in bile duct epithelial cells (cholangiocytes) and that some of those features are associated with mis-regulation at the epigenetic level.

Rehabilitation training using a single-joint type hybrid assistive limb for the knee after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: an initial case report indicating safety and feasibility.

[Purpose] The aim of this report was to describe the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of rehabilitation by knee extension and flexion training using the knee single-joint hybrid assistive limb in a patient after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. [Participant and Methods] A 33 year-old male underwent an arthroscopic procedure for anatomic single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with a semitendinosus tendon autograft. Rehabilitation training using the knee single-joint hybrid assistive limb was initiated at postoperative week 18 and repeated weekly for 3 weeks.

Background: Technology-enhanced learning includes the adaptive e-learning platform, a data-driven method with computer algorithms, providing customised learning enhancing critical thinking of individual learners. "Firecracker" - an online adaptive e-learning platform, and assessment software, promotes critical thinking, helps prepare students for courses and high-stakes examinations, and evaluates progress relative to co-learners. The objectives of this study were to determine the usage rates of Firecracker, examine the performance of Firecracker formative quizzes, identify the correlation between Firecracker use and performance with that of performance at summative course assessments, and assess students' satisfaction with Firecracker usage.

Feasibility Case Study for Treating a Patient with Sensory Ataxia Following a Stroke with Kinesthetic Illusion Induced by Visual Stimulation.

Background: Sensory ataxia is a disorder of movement coordination caused by sensory deficits, especially in kinesthetic perception. Visual stimulus-induced kinesthetic illusion (KINVIS) is a method used to provide vivid kinesthetic perception without peripheral sensory input by using a video showing pre-recorded limb movements while the actual limb remains stationary. We examined the effects of KINVIS intervention in a patient with sensory ataxia.

Motor imagery combined with action observation training optimized for individual motor skills further improves motor skills close to a plateau.

The acquisition of high-level motor skills beyond a "plateau" is important in sports training and rehabilitation. We aimed to investigate whether motor skills close to a plateau state can be improved further by performing motor imagery (MI) training while observing movements with difficulty levels optimized for individual motor skills. The subjects were divided randomly into four groups (n = 10 per group): the control group and three groups of MI combined with action observation (MI + AO) training with varying difficulty levels.

Partial EMT/MET: An Army of One.

As our understanding of Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) increases, the original binary concept of E versus M no longer fits with experimental evidence. Re-definition of the EMT paradigm as spectral transitions between a full epithelium and a full mesenchyme suggests the existence of a virtual infinity of intermediate cellular states. The new challenge is to develop technical tools needed to contextualize each of these states and identify biologically significant cellular mechanisms that could be targeted in combatting EMT-related diseases.

Muscle activity changes quantitatively and temporally during the motor learning process. However, the association between variability in muscle electrical activity and the learning and performance of dexterous hand movements is not well understood. Therefore, we undertook this study to investigate the relationships between temporal and quantitative variabilities in muscle activity and the learning of motor skills.

This article reviews the current state of knowledge concerning the origin, transmission, diagnosis and management of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Historically, it has caused two pandemics: severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome followed by the present COVID-19 that emerged from China.

An Exploratory Study of Quality of Life and Its Relationship with Academic Performance among Students in Medical and other Health Professions.

Quality of life (QOL) is a broader concept which represents experiences, states, appraisals, behaviors, capacities and emotional reactions to circumstances. The study aimed to evaluate the differences in various domains of QOL among the students of five schools (medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and nursing) and an optometry unit in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Trinidad and Tobago. Further, the study evaluated the factors (sociodemographic variables and academic performance) predictive of physical, psychological, social and environment domains of quality of life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus epidemic a pandemic. In light of rising concern about the current COVID-19 pandemic, a growing number of universities across the world have either postponed or canceled all campus events such as workshops, conferences, sports, and other activities.

Postoperative complications are associated with poor survival outcome after curative resection for colorectal cancer: A propensity-score analysis.

Objective: We retrospectively evaluated the impact of postoperative complications on long-term outcomes after curative resection for colorectal cancer (CRC), using propensity-score analysis (PSA).
