Introduction: In low-and-middle-income-countries (LMIC), viral suppression is defined as plasma viral load (PVL) below 1000 copies/mL (low-level viremia [LLV]) and threshold for HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) testing. However, there is evidence that drug resistance mutations (DRMs) may emerge at LLV, thus compromising antiretroviral treatment (ART) response We evaluated sequencing success rates (SSR) at LLV, described HIVDR profiles and adequacy with potential efficacy of tenofovir-lamivudine-dolutegravir (TLD).

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among individuals with LLV at the Chantal BIYA International Reference Centre, Yaoundé, Cameroon from January 2020 through August 2021.

Shifts in seasonal influenza patterns in Australia during and after COVID-19: A comprehensive analysis.

J Infect Public Health

December 2024

Ecosystem Change and Population Health Research Group, School of Public Health and Social Work, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, seasonal influenza virus circulation was heavily suppressed worldwide. In Australia, since the virus re-emerged in 2022, shifts in seasonal influenza patterns have been observed. Both the 2022 and 2023 seasons started earlier than pre-pandemic norms and were categorised as moderate to severe, highlighting the renewed importance of prevention strategies for seasonal influenza.

Constructing High-Performance Composite Epoxy Resins: Interfacial π-π Stacking Interactions-Driven Physical Rolling Behavior of Silica Microspheres.

Adv Mater

December 2024

School of Materials and Chemistry and State Key Laboratory of Environment-friendly Energy Materials, Southwest University of Science and Technology, 59, Middle Qinglong Avenue, Mianyang, 621010, P. R. China.

The intrinsic compromise between strength and toughness in composite epoxy resins significantly constrains their practical applications. In this study, a novel strategy is introduced, leveraging interfacial π-π stacking interactions to induce the "rolling behavior" of microsphere fillers, thereby facilitating efficient energy dissipation. This approach is corroborated through theoretical simulations and experimental validation.

Genomic and transmission dynamics of the 2024 Marburg Virus Outbreak in Rwanda.

Nat Med

December 2024

Rwanda Joint Task Force for Marburg Virus Disease Outbreak, Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Centre, Kigali, Rwanda.

The ongoing outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Rwanda marks the third largest historically, though it has exhibited the lowest fatality rate. Genomic analysis of samples from 18 cases identified a lineage with limited internal diversity, closely related to a 2014 Ugandan case. Our findings suggest that the Rwandan lineage diverged decades ago from a common ancestor shared with diversity sampled from bats in Uganda.

Acta Diabetol

December 2024

Department of General Practice, Zhongda Hospital, Institute of Diabetes, School of Medicine, Southeast University, No.87 Dingjiaqiao Street, 210009, Nanjing, China.

Background: Cluster analysis provides an effective approach in stratifying prediabetes into different subgroups; however, the association of the cluster-based subgroups with prediabetes progression and regression has not been investigated. We aimed to address this issue in a Chinese population.

Methods: A total of 4,128 participants with prediabetes were included to generate cluster-based subgroups of prediabetes based on age, body mass index (BMI), triglyceride-and-glucose (TyG) index, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), using a k-means clustering model.

Genomic perspective on the bacillus causing paratyphoid B fever.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Institut Pasteur, Université Paris Cité, Unité des Bactéries pathogènes entériques, Paris, F-75015, France.

Paratyphoid B fever (PTB) is caused by an invasive lineage (phylogroup 1, PG1) of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi B (SPB). However, little was known about the global population structure, geographic distribution, and evolution of this pathogen. Here, we report a whole-genome analysis of 568 historical and contemporary SPB PG1 isolates, obtained globally, between 1898 and 2021.

College of Bioengineering, National ''111'' Center for Cellular Regulation and Molecular Pharmaceutics, Key Laboratory of Fermentation Engineering (Ministry of Education), Hubei Provincial Cooperative Innovation Center of Industrial Fermentation, Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A novel uncapped mRNA platform was created to enhance transfection efficiency and immune response, using lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology.
  • Five different mRNA constructs were tested, leading to measurable protein expression and robust immune responses in various animal models, particularly targeting COVID-19 and HSV2.
  • The platform, which simplifies the mRNA synthesis process, shows promise for potential applications in vaccines and therapeutic proteins, outperforming traditional constructs in immunity induction.

Objectives: Following the outbreak of hepatitis E in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Borno State in 2017, we assessed hepatitis B, C, and E biomarkers (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg], anti-HBC, anti-hepatitis E virus [HEV] immunoglobulin [Ig] G, and anti-HEV IgM) among IDPs in three camps in Borno State, Nigeria, to determine seroprevalence rates in these understudied populations.

Methods: A total of 454 IDPs, including pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, were randomly selected, and their demographic, clinical, and epidemiological data were collected. Blood samples were tested for HBsAg and anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) using rapid tests, anti-HEV IgM, and anti-HEV IgG using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) represents a significant global health threat, with a disproportionately high disease burden in low and middle-income regions (LMIRs). Estimating the prevalence of RSV infection at the community levels remains a huge challenge, particularly in LMIRs where clinical data are scarce. In this study, we first detected RSV RNA in the fecal samples from 300 patients to understand the fecal shedding patterns of RSV.
