The origin of plastids (chloroplasts) by endosymbiosis stands as one of the most important events in the history of eukaryotic life. The genetic, biochemical, and cell biological integration of a cyanobacterial endosymbiont into a heterotrophic host eukaryote approximately a billion years ago paved the way for the evolution of diverse algal groups in a wide range of aquatic and, eventually, terrestrial environments. Plastids have on multiple occasions also moved horizontally from eukaryote to eukaryote by secondary and tertiary endosymbiotic events.

Rare genetic lipid disorders comprise all the monogenic disorders of lipoprotein metabolism with the exception of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). The creation and maintenance of patient registries is critical for disease monitoring, improving clinical best practice, facilitating research and enabling the development of novel therapeutics, but very few disease-specific rare genetic lipid disorder registries currently exist. Our aim was to design, develop and deploy a web-based patient registry for rare genetic lipid disorders.

Comparative chromosome-painting analysis among highly rearranged karyotypes of Sigmodontinae rodents (Rodentia, Cricetidae) detects conserved syntenic blocks, which are proposed as chromosomal signatures and can be used as phylogenetic markers. In the Akodontini tribe, the molecular topology (Cytb and/or IRBP) shows five low-supported clades (divisions: "", "", "", "", and "") within two high-supported major clades (clade A: "", "", and ""; clade B: "" and ""). Here, we examine the chromosomal signatures of the Akodontini tribe by using (HME) probes to study the karyotypes of (2n = 54, FN = 64) and (2n = 28, FN = 50), and compare these data with those from other taxa investigated using the same set of probes.

The mandarin vole, , is one of the most intriguing species among mammals with non-XX/XY sex chromosome system. It combines polymorphism in diploid chromosome numbers, variation in the morphology of autosomes, heteromorphism of X chromosomes, and several sex chromosome systems the origin of which remains unexplained. Despite the richness of species in the Hirudinidae family, little is known about the genome organization of swallows. The Progne tapera species presents genetic and morphological difference when compared to other members of the same genus. Hence, the aims of this study were to analyze the chromosomal evolution of three species Progne tapera, Progne chalybea and Pygochelidon cyanoleuca - by comparative chromosome painting using two sets of probes, Gallus gallus and Zenaida auriculata, in order to determine chromosome homologies and the relationship between these species.

To date, such studies have largely focused on animals, fungi, and land plants (primarily multicellular eukaryotes); relatively few mitochondrial proteomes from protists (primarily unicellular eukaryotic microbes) have been examined. Outbreaks of diseases in farmed fish remain a recurring problem despite the development of vaccines and improved hygiene standards on aquaculture farms. One commonly observed bacterial disease in tropical aquaculture of the South-East Asian region is tenacibaculosis, which is attributed to members of the genus Tenacibaculum (family Flavobacteriaceae, phylum Bacteroidetes), most notably Tenacibaculum maritimum. The impact of tenacibaculosis on the fish microbiota remains poorly understood.

To an extent the question posed in the title of this paper can simply be answered in the affirmative. Based on the extensive data available from the National Family Health Survey-1 (NFHS-1) conducted in 1992-93 and NFHS-4 in 2015-16 there has been a significant overall decline of some 19% in the prevalence of consanguineous marriage in India. However, when examined at state level the picture is more complex, with large reductions in consanguinity in southern states where intra-familial marriage previously has been strongly favoured, whereas in some northern states in which close kin unions traditionally have been proscribed small increases were recorded.

In the current study, we developed interpolymer-complex structures composed of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and chitosan knitted with d-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) to establish oral nanoparticle delivery systems that could keep the drug dose from releasing into the gastrointestinal tract for at least 6 h. Two kinds of nanoparticle formations based on the so-called conjugate-by-conjugate strategy were introduced in the study. In the first conjugate-by-conjugate structured nanoparticle formation, TPGS was conjugated with an HPMC-chitosan conjugate, followed by the drug loading process.

The long history of discovery and recently encouraging studies of the anti-cancer effect of aspirin promise a closer step to widely used aspirin-based medication in cancer therapy. To resolve the poor water-solubility of aspirin and low encapsulation efficiency of exosomes for further developing a new delivery of aspirin as anti-cancer treatment, our nanoamorphous exosomal delivery platform was established. In this study, the anti-tumour effects of nanoamorphous aspirin-loaded exosomes with exosomes derived from breast and colorectal cancer cells, were comprehensively studied using both in vitro and in vivo models.

Recent evidence suggests that numerous long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are dysregulated in cancer, and have critical roles in tumour development and progression. The present study investigated the ghrelin receptor antisense lncRNA growth hormone secretagogue receptor opposite strand (GHSROS) in breast cancer. Reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed that GHSROS expression was significantly upregulated in breast tumour tissues compared with normal breast tissue.

Background: The Neacomys genus is predominantly found in the Amazon region, and belongs to the most diverse tribe of the Sigmodontinae subfamily (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Oryzomyini). The systematics of this genus and questions about its diversity and range have been investigated by morphological, molecular (Cytb and COI sequences) and karyotype analysis (classic cytogenetics and chromosome painting), which have revealed candidate species and new distribution areas. Here we analyzed four species of Neacomys by chromosome painting with Hylaeamys megacephalus (HME) whole-chromosome probes, and compared the results with two previously studied Neacomys species and with other taxa from Oryzomyini and Akodontini tribes that have been hybridized with HME probes.

Nucleariid amoebae (Opisthokonta) have been known since the nineteenth century but their diversity and evolutionary history remain poorly understood. To overcome this limitation, we have obtained genomic and transcriptomic data from three , two and one species using traditional culturing and single-cell genome (SCG) and single-cell transcriptome amplification methods. The phylogeny of the complete 18S rRNA sequences of and confirmed their suggested evolutionary relatedness to nucleariid amoebae, although with moderate support for internal splits.

Euglenozoa comprises euglenids, kinetoplastids, and diplonemids, with each group exhibiting different and highly unusual mitochondrial genome organizations. Although they are sister groups, kinetoplastids and diplonemids have very distinct mitochondrial genome architectures, requiring widespread insertion/deletion RNA editing and extensive -splicing, respectively, in order to generate functional transcripts. The evolutionary history by which these differing processes arose remains unclear.
