Background: This study aimed to clarify the appropriate timing for epinephrine administration in adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), particularly those cases with nonshockable rhythms, by addressing resuscitation time bias.

Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study utilizing a multicenter OHCA registry involving 95 hospitals in Japan between June 2014 and December 2020. We included patients with OHCA and nonshockable rhythms who received epinephrine during resuscitation.

Objective: Large-scale mortality trials require reliable secondary assessments of impairment. We compared the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3), a screening tool self-administered by parents, in classifying impairment using the 'gold standard' Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley-III), a diagnostic tool administered by trained assessors.

Design: Analysis of 405 children around 2 years corrected age from the Australian Placental Transfusion Study, a trial conducted over 8 years.

Background: Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a robust prognostic biomarker in patients with cardiovascular (CV) disease, and a better understanding of its clinical determinants is desirable. We aimed to study the associations between GDF-15 levels and in outpatients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Methods: An explorative cross-sectional study (Study of Atherosclerosis in Vastmanland, Västerås, Sweden) included 439 outpatients with carotid or lower extremity PAD.

Background: Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) have significant implications for public health, potentially leading to decreased immunization rates and vaccine hesitancy. Understanding the characteristics and outcomes of children experiencing AEFI is crucial for effective intervention strategies and informed decision-making. This study aimed to describe the diverse range of AEFI presentations, identify common referral sources and assess factors influencing vaccination uptake following specialist consultation.

The role of biomarkers in risk-based early detection of lung cancer may enable screening to become cost effective and widely accessible. EarlyCDT-Lung is an example of such a blood-based autoantibody biomarker which may improve accessibility to Low dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) screening for those at highest risk. We randomized 12 208 individuals aged 50-75 at high risk of developing lung cancer to either the test or to standard clinical care.

Dynamic PK/PD Infection Models for the Development and Optimisation of Antimicrobial Regimens: A Narrative Review.

Antibiotics (Basel)

December 2024

Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD 4029, Australia.

The antimicrobial concentration-time profile in humans affects antimicrobial activity, and as such, it is critical for preclinical infection models to simulate human-like dynamic concentration-time profiles for maximal translatability. This review discusses the setup, principle, and application of various dynamic PK/PD infection models commonly used in the development and optimisation of antimicrobial treatment regimens. It covers the commonly used dynamic infection models, including the one-compartment model, hollow fibre infection model, biofilm model, bladder infection model, and aspergillus infection model.

Background: Differentiating idiopathic Parkinson disease (iPD) from other causes of tremor and parkinsonism based on clinical grounds can be challenging, particularly early in the course of disease or in the case of atypical clinical presentations. F-fluorodopa (F-DOPA) is a positron emission tomography (PET) radioligand that can be used to demonstrate the presence and pattern of striatal presynaptic dopaminergic deficit and, thus, assist in the diagnosis of iPD and related disorders.

Aims: To determine the clinical utility of F-DOPA PET in an Australian movement disorder clinic setting.

Health care systems are confronted with an increasing burden of (multi-)morbidity and a shortfall of healthcare providers. Coordination and continuity of care in chronic and multi-morbid patient is especially important. As qualitative patient experience data within care processes is scarce, we aim to increase the understanding of chronically ill patient's perspectives by assessing patient experiences in different health systems while treated in primary care.

"Butterflies in the air, you're now a breastfeeding mother": A qualitative study of women's experiences receiving postnatal midwifery breastfeeding support.

Women Birth

January 2025

School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, The University of Queensland, Whitty Building, Mater Hospital Campus, South Brisbane, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: Despite breastfeeding being widely accepted as the optimal feeding method for infants many women do not meet their breastfeeding goals or continue to breastfeed as long as recommended. Continuation of exclusive breastfeeding is multifactorial, with midwifery support during the postnatal period considered to be an important component. However, little is known about how women receive this support from midwives across varying models of care.

Background: With the rise in salience of the concept of gender identity, changes are being made to language and data collection with major implications for women's health research and equality. Specifically, language referring to women is being desexed and data collection on sex diminishing. In 2023, Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) undertook public consultations on two draft guidance documents discussing use of the words 'woman'/'women' when describing the involvement of pregnant women in research, and sex and gender identity data collection.

Thorough consideration of user experiences and the weighing of advantages and disadvantages are essential when implementing new technology in clinical practice. This article describes a primary care nurse's experience using two technologies to monitor lung congestion in six patient cases: a remote dielectric sensing device for non-invasive lung fluid measurement and a portable handheld ultrasound device. Both can support decision-making when assessing lung congestion in heart failure patients.

Microbial DNA Profiles of Bacterial Extracellular Vesicles from 3D Salivary Polymicrobial Biofilms - A Pilot Study.

Adv Healthc Mater

January 2025

School of Dentistry, Center for Oral-facial Regeneration, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (COR3), Epigenetics nanodiagnostic and therapeutic group, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, 4006, Australia.

With the advent of multi-layered and 3D scaffolds, the understanding of microbiome composition and pathogenic mechanisms within polymicrobial biofilms is continuously evolving. A fundamental component in mediating the microenvironment and bacterial-host communication within the biofilm are bilayered nanoparticles secreted by bacteria, known as bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs), which transport key biomolecules including proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolites. Their characteristics and microbiome profiles are yet to be explored in the context of in vitro salivary polymicrobial biofilm.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on developing an optimized lidocaine dosing regimen for obese patients during surgery, highlighting the need for more effective pain management.
  • Researchers gathered data from 30 patients, measuring plasma levels of lidocaine and its metabolites to create a pharmacokinetic model.
  • The findings suggested that current dosing was often inadequate, but an adjusted regimen could improve the likelihood of reaching therapeutic drug concentrations.

Psychiatry Res

December 2024

Centre for Psychiatry Research, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm Health Care Services, Karolinska University Hospital, Region Stockholm, Stockholm SE-171 76, Sweden; Stockholm Health Care Services, Region Stockholm, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between rising autism-related disorder (ASD-R) diagnosis rates and decreasing major depressive disorder (MDD) rates in Swedish adolescents aged 15-19 from 2008 to 2022.
  • Results show a significant inverse relationship, with higher ASD-R diagnoses correlating to lower MDD rates, particularly in males.
  • While causal conclusions are limited due to the study's observational design, the findings suggest a need for more comprehensive research on the complex interplay between these disorders.
