Objective: In a recent study, we found an elevated level of interleukin 8 (IL-8) in response to bacterial incubation in thrombin-sufficient human whole blood anticoagulated by the fibrin polymerization blocking peptide GPRP. Whether thrombin directly activated leukocytes or mediated the release thrombin-dependent activation of platelets remains unresolved. Herein, we addressed the role of thrombin and platelets in IL-8 release.

The innate immune system is rapidly activated during myocardial infarction and blockade of extracellular complement system reduces infarct size. Intracellular complement, however, appears to be closely linked to metabolic pathways and its role in ischemia-reperfusion injury is unknown and may be different from complement activation in the circulation. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of intracellular complement in isolated, retrogradely buffer-perfused hearts and cardiac cells from adult male wild type mice (WT) and from adult male mice with knockout of complement component 3 (C3KO).

The 2019 coronavirus outbreak caused a global health emergency. Some therapeutic strategies for this pathology focus on natural compounds, such as flavonoids, because of their antimicrobial and antiviral properties. However, the therapeutic efficacy of these active compounds is limited by their low bioavailability.

Dyslipidemia, characterized by a high level of lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides, or both), can increase the risk of developing and progressing atherosclerosis. As atherosclerosis progresses, the number and severity of aterial plagues increases with greater risk of myocardial infarction, a major contributor to cardiovascular mortality. Atherosclerosis progresses in four phases, namely endothelial dysfunction, fatty streak formation, lesion progression and plaque rupture, and eventually thrombosis and arterial obstruction.

Most SARS-CoV-2 infected patients experience influenza-like symptoms of low or moderate severity. But, already in 2020 early during the pandemic it became obvious that many patients had a high incidence of thrombotic complications, which prompted treatment with high doses of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH; typically 150-300IU/kg) to prevent thrombosis. In some patients, the disease aggravated after approximately 10 days and turned into a full-blown acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)-like pulmonary inflammation with endothelialitis, thrombosis and vascular angiogenesis, which often lead to intensive care treatment with ventilator support.

Generating skeletal muscle tissue that mimics the cellular alignment, maturation, and function of native skeletal muscle is an ongoing challenge in disease modeling and regenerative therapies. Skeletal muscle cultures require extracellular guidance and mechanical support to stabilize contractile myofibers. Existing microfabrication-based solutions are limited by complex fabrication steps, low throughput, and challenges in measuring dynamic contractile function.

Bone and joint tuberculosis is an extremely severe infectious disease that commonly occurs due to the primary infection of a type of mycobacteria, called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Under the current scenario, there are very limited supplies of bone grafts available for the treatment of deceased bone, including autogenous bone and synthetic biomaterials. The present study aimed to construct a nanoscale isoniazid-loaded mineralized collagen implant, and then to explore its physicochemical properties and to investigate its biocompatibility suitable for bone and joint repair.

Bluefield Centre for Biomaterials, UK and Dental Physical Sciences, Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, London E1 4NS, UK.

The complex role of water in glass ionomer cement (polyalkenoate) dental restorative materials has been studied, but much of the present understanding concerning water balance within these materials is based on very early studies and short-term experiments. This study evaluated the nature of the water species of six conventional and four resin modified glass ionomer restorative materials over 3 years using thermogravimetric analysis techniques. Materials were prepared, placed in crucibles, and stored in physiologic phosphate buffered saline and evaluated at 24 h, 1 week, and then at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months.

Biomaterials and Bioengineering Lab, Centro de Investigación Traslacional San Alberto Magno, Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir, 46001 Valencia, Spain.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a microbial biodegradable polymer with a broad range of promising industrial applications. The effect of incorporation of low amounts (1% ) of carbon nanomaterials (CBNs) such as 1D carbon nanofibers (CNFs) or 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets into the PHBV polymer matrix affects its degradation properties, as it is reported here for the first time. The study was performed in simulated gut conditions using two different media: an acidic aqueous medium (pH 6) and Gifu anaerobic medium.

Peripheral nerve injury involves complex molecular, cellular, and genetic events that help in ultimate regeneration of nerve. Some key factors are upregulated and some downregulated in the process of regeneration of nerve to attain almost perfect architecture. This review renders short overview about how the injured neurons and supporting cells like Schwann cells help in creating ample microenvironment for regeneration of peripheral nerve and their maturation.

The as-cast specimens were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicated that flake-like silicon particles and HEA particles were distributed uniformly in the aluminum matrix.

Objective: Dysregulation of the complement system has been described in patients with heart failure (HF). However, data on the alternative pathway are scarce and it is unknown if levels of factor B (FB) and the C3 convertase C3bBbP are elevated in these patients. We hypothesized that plasma levels of FB and C3bBbP would be associated with disease severity and survival in patients with HF.

Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of mortality across the globe, and transplant surgeries are not always successful since it is not always possible to replace most of the damaged heart tissues, for example in myocardial infarction. Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, is an important biomaterial for many biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Based on the origin, degree of deacetylation, structure, and biological functions, chitosan has emerged for vital tissue engineering applications.

This research aims to investigate nonionic hyperbranched polyesters (HBPs) derived from indole and lignin resources as new nontoxic antimicrobial coatings. Three nonionic HBPs with zero to two methoxy ether substituents on each benzene ring in the polymer backbones were synthesized by melt-polycondensation of three corresponding AB monomers. The molecular structures and thermal properties of the obtained HBPs were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry analyses.

Key Laboratory of Material Chemistry for Energy Conversion and Storage, Ministry of Education, Hubei Key Laboratory of Material Chemistry and Service Failure, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China.

Surfaces with desirable cytocompatibility and bactericidal ability are favoured for orthopaedic implants to stimulate osteogenic activity and to prevent implant-associated infection. In this work, we creatively introduce ultrasonic vibration (UV) to micro-arc oxidation (MAO) process and explore its influence on the microstructure, corrosion property and biological responses of Zn-modified TiO coating. With the introduction of UV, a uniform surface layer with homogeneously-distributed clusters could be produced as the outer layer, which possesses a fusion band with the underlying TiO.
