Pure titanium is widely used in clinical implants, but its bioinert properties (poor strength and mediocre effect on bone healing) limit its use under load-bearing conditions. Modeling on the structure of collagen fibrils and specific nanocrystal plane arrangement of hydroxyapatite in the natural bone, a new type of titanium (Ti) with a highly aligned fibrous-grained (FG) microstructure is constructed. The improved attributes of FG Ti include high strength (≈950 MPa), outstanding affinity to new bone growth, and tight bone-implant contact.

In this study, electrospun membranes were developed for controlled drug release applications. Both uniaxial Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and coaxial fibers with a PVA core and a poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) coating were produced with different coating structures. Hydrogels have been developed for different biomedical applications such as in vitro culture platforms, drug delivery, bioprinting and tissue engineering. Enzymatic cross-linking has many advantages for its ability to form gels in situ while being injected into tissue, which facilitates minimally invasive surgery and adaptation to the shape of the defect. It is a highly biocompatible form of cross-linking, which permits the harmless encapsulation of cytokines and cells in contrast to chemically or photochemically induced cross-linking processes.

The residual and scattered small tumor tissue or cells after surgery are the main reason for tumor recurrence. This paper reports the preparation and characterization of hybrid scaffolds composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and different graphene oxide (GO) amounts, intending to incorporate the intrinsic characteristics of their constituents, such as bioactivity and biocidal effect. These materials were fabricated by a solvent-casting/particulate leaching technique showing a bimodal porosity (macro and micro) that was around 90%. The highly interconnected scaffolds were immersed in a simulated body fluid, promoting the growth of a hydroxyapatite (HAp) layer, making them ideal candidates for bone tissue engineering.

The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) for the electronic and automobile industries combined with the limited availability of key metal components, in particular cobalt, drives the need for efficient methods for the recovery and recycling of these materials from battery waste. Herein, we introduce a novel and efficient approach for the extraction of cobalt, and other metal components, from spent LiBs using a nonionic deep eutectic solvent (ni-DES) comprised of -methylurea and acetamide under relatively mild conditions. Cobalt could be recovered from lithium cobalt oxide-based LiBs with an extraction efficiency of >97% and used to fabricate new batteries.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) combined with cobalt ferrite (CFO) particles is one of the most common and effective polymeric magnetoelectric composites. Processing PVDF into its electroactive phase is a mandatory condition for featuring electroactive behavior and specific (post)processing may be needed to achieve this state, although electroactive phase crystallization is favored at processing temperatures below 60 °C. Different techniques are used to process PVDF-CFO nanocomposite structures into microspheres with high CFO dispersion, with microfluidics adding the advantages of high reproducibility, size tunability, and time and resource efficiency.

Pyrazole and its derivatives are important azole heteroarenes prevalent in pharmaceutical compounds and have been used as ligands for protein binding, making them valuable targets for synthetic applications. Herein we disclose an electrochemical intermolecular C-H/N-H oxidative annulation of 2-phenylpyrazoles with alkynes using a rhodium(III) redox regime without any external metal oxidants in a water compatible solvent system. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes were shown to be compatible with the optimized conditions.

Proteinaceous, tunable nanostructures of zein (prolamine of corn) were developed as biotinyl-specific receptors using a molecular imprinting technique. Sacrificial templates, such as latex beads (LB3) and anodized alumina membrane (AAM), have been used to control nanostructural patterns in biotin-imprinted zein (BMZ). This study mainly deals with an effective one-pot solvothermal synthetic pathway for the preparation of uniformly dispersed zirconium oxide nanoparticles on the flattened rough surface of reduced graphene oxide (ZrO/rGO NCs) using the aqueous leaf extract of . After obtaining detailed information on the preparation and characterization, the anticancer activity of the synthesized ZrO/rGO nanocrystals (NCs) was evaluated on two human cancer cell lines (A549 and HCT116) along with one normal human cell line (hMSC). The 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays revealed that ZrO/rGO NCs exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxicity pattern.
