Mechanically regulated microcarriers with stem cell loading for skin photoaging therapy.

Bioact Mater

April 2025

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, 325035, China.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation compromises skin structural integrity and results in disruption of normal physiological functions. Stem cells have gained attention in anti-photoaging, while controlling the tissue mechanical microenvironment of cell delivery sites is crucial for regulating cell fate and achieving optimal therapeutic performances. Here, we introduce a mechanically regulated human recombinant collagen (RHC) microcarrier generated through microfluidics, which is capable of modulating stem cell differentiation to treat photoaged skin.

De-novo Genome Assembly of the Edwardsiid Anthozoan Edwardsia elegans.

G3 (Bethesda)

January 2025

Department of Biological Sciences, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, 9201 University City Blvd, Charlotte, North Carolina 28223.

Cnidarians (sea anemones, corals, hydroids, and jellyfish) are a key outgroup for comparisons with bilaterial animals to trace the evolution of genomic complexity and diversity within the animal kingdom, as they separated from most other animals 100s of millions of years ago. Cnidarians have extensive diversity, yet the paucity of genomic resources limits our ability to compare genomic variation between cnidarian clades and species. Here we report the genome for Edwardsia elegans, a sea anemone in the most specious genus of the family Edwardsiidae, a phylogenetically important family of sea anemones that contains the model anemone Nematostella vectensis.

The physicochemical stability of liposomes (L) loaded with bioactive compounds can be improved by coating them with chitosan, to give chitosomes (Ch). In addition, crosslinked chitosan can be obtained by using sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). This study aimed to prepare L enriched with bioactive compounds extracted from pineapple by-products (PB) without coating or coated with chitosan or crosslinked chitosan-enriched with PB bioactive compounds, to obtain Ch and TPP-Ch, respectively.

ROR1 CAR-T cells and ferroptosis inducers orchestrate tumor ferroptosis via PC-PUFA2.

Biomark Res

January 2025

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, 200030, China.

Background: Lung cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), has high recurrence rates and remains a leading cause of cancer-related death, despite recent advances in its treatment. Emerging therapies, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, have shown promise but face significant challenges in targeting solid tumors. This study investigated the potential of combining receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1)-targeting CAR-T cells with ferroptosis inducers to promote ferroptosis of tumor cells and enhance anti-tumor efficacy.

Background: Autologous fat grafting (AFG) often needs multiple sessions due to low volume retention. Young adipose tissue demonstrates a more pronounced therapeutic effect; thus, the cryopreservation of adipose tissue of young origin is particularly crucial. This study investigated the protective effect of a new cryopreservation solution combining trehalose, glycerol, and metformin on adipose tissue.

Background: Chemical-induced acute lung injury is characterized by impaired epithelial regenerative capacity, leading to acute pulmonary edema. Numerous studies have investigated the therapeutic potential of endogenous stem cells with particular emphasis on alveolar type 2 epithelial (AEC2) cells owing to their involvement in lung cell renewal. Sox9, a transcription factor known for its role in maintaining stem cell properties and guiding cell differentiation, marks a subset of AEC2 cells believed to contribute to epithelial repair.

Photodynamic and photothermal bacteria targeting nanosystems for synergistically combating bacteria and biofilms.

J Nanobiotechnology

January 2025

Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, College of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 639 Zhizaoju Road, Shanghai, 200011, China.

The escalating hazards posed by bacterial infections underscore the imperative for pioneering advancements in next-generation antibacterial modalities and treatments. Present therapeutic methodologies are frequently impeded by the constraints of insufficient biofilm infiltration and the absence of precision in pathogen-specific targeting. In this current study, we have used chlorin e6 (Ce6), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), polydopamine (PDA), and UBI peptide to formulate an innovative nanosystem meticulously engineered to confront bacterial infections and effectually dismantle biofilm architectures through the concerted mechanism of photodynamic therapy (PDT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) therapies, including in-depth research, especially for oral bacteria and oral biofilm.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a form of autoimmune inflammation, is marked by enduring synovial inflammation and the subsequent impairment of joint function. Despite the availability of conventional treatments, they are often marred by significant side effects and the associated high costs. Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs) offer a compelling alternative, owing to their abundant availability, affordability, low immunogenicity, high biocompatibility, and feasibility for large-scale production.

Stem Cell Res Ther

January 2025

Department of Stomatology, The Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510630, China.

Background: Interaction between mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells plays a major role in OSCC progression. However, little is known about adipogenic differentiation alteration in OSCC-derived MSCs (OSCC-MSCs) and how these alterations affect OSCC growth.

Methods: MSCs were successfully isolated and cultured from normal gingival tissue, OSCC peritumoral tissue, and OSCC tissue.

Enriched environment (EE), as a non-pharmacological intervention, has garnered considerable attention for its potential to ameliorate neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). This review delineated the impact of EE on the biological functions associated with NDs, emphasizing its role in enhancing neural plasticity, reducing inflammation, and bolstering cognitive performance. We discussed the molecular underpinnings of the effects of EE, including modulation of key signaling pathways such as extracellular regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), and AMPK/SIRT1, which were implicated in neuroprotection and synaptic plasticity.

Cell Commun Signal

January 2025

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Human Embryo Engineering and Precision Medicine, Center for Reproductive Medicine, Women and Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, 400010, China.
