Risk factors and cognitive correlates of white matter hyperintensities in ethnically diverse populations without dementia: The COSMIC consortium.

Introduction: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are an important imaging marker for cerebral small vessel diseases, but their risk factors and cognitive associations have not been well documented in populations of different ethnicities and/or from different geographical regions.

Methods: We investigated how WMHs were associated with vascular risk factors and cognition in both Whites and Asians, using data from five population-based cohorts of non-demented older individuals from Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Sweden ( = 1946). WMH volumes (whole brain, periventricular, and deep) were quantified with UBO Detector and harmonized using the ComBat model.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in LOXL1 as biomarkers for progression of exfoliation glaucoma in Sweden.

Purpose: Exfoliation glaucoma is a common and aggressive type of glaucoma with high prevalence in Scandinavia. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether the allele frequencies of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in LOXL1 were associated with the progression of exfoliation glaucoma in Swedish patients.

Methods: In this non-randomised cohort study, we enrolled patients with exfoliation glaucoma, and they performed at least five reliable visual field tests.

Introduction: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that leads to visual field defects. Genetic mechanisms seem to be involved in glaucoma development. Lysyl Oxidase Like 1 () has been described in previous studies as a predictor factor for exfoliation glaucoma.

What constitutes feeling safe at home? A qualitative interview study with frail older people receiving home care.

Aim: To highlight experiences of what constitutes feeling safe at home among frail older people receiving home care.

Design: Qualitative descriptive study.

Methods: The sample consists of 12 individual recorded interviews with frail older people in their homes.

Effects of a person-centred and thriving-promoting intervention on nursing home staff job satisfaction: A multi-centre, non-equivalent controlled before-after study.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of a person-centred and thriving-promoting intervention in nursing homes on staff job satisfaction, stress of conscience and the person-centredness of care and of the environment.

Design: A multi-centre, non-equivalent control group, before-after trial design.

Methods: Staff ( = 341) from six nursing homes in Australia, Norway and Sweden were assigned to the intervention or the control group and both groups were evaluated before the intervention, immediately after and by 6 months follow-up.
