The effects of combined administration of NaCl and the ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) inhibitor 1,3-diaminopropane (DAP) on the incidence and number of gastric cancers induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and on the ODC activity of the gastric wall and the labeling index of the gastric mucosa were investigated in inbred Wistar rats. Rats were given drinking water with or without 2.5 g/l DAP and chow pellets with and without 10% NaCl ad libitum after 25 weeks of oral administration of MNNG.

In the present study, pS2 protein expression in pulmonary adenocarcinoma was investigated on paraffin-embedded sections obtained from 170 patients. 28 (16%) patients showed varying degrees of pS2 protein expression in the cytoplasm of tumour cells, as detected by immunohistochemical staining with anti-pS2 protein antibody. There was a significant association between pS2 protein expression and larger tumour size, and the acinar or bronchiolo-alveolar subtype.

This is a study of complement components secreted by gastric cancer-derived cell lines (MKN28, MKN45, MKN74 and KATO-III), each of which has a different histological origin. Haemolytic activity of complement component was detected only in the culture supernatant of KATO-III (C2 activity) and in that of MKN45 (C5 activity). However, the third component of complement, C3, was detected by an ELISA assay in the supernatants of all cell lines.

Aims: To determine the correlation between cathepsin B expression and laminin distribution in pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissue.
Methods: The distribution of cathepsin B and laminin was examined in 28 formalin fixed, paraffin wax embedded specimens of pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissue, using a double immunostaining technique with commercially available antibodies to cathepsin B and laminin, respectively.
Results: Tumour cells in 23 (82%) cases reacted to cathepsin B: 13 cases were weakly positive and 10 were strongly positive.

The pathological characteristics and natural history of 35 gastric remnant cancers after partial gastrectomy for a malignant condition and 16 gastric cancers after gastrectomy for benign conditions were compared. Gastric remnant cancer following malignant disease was characterized by a well defined rather than diffuse appearance (in 43 versus 12 per cent of gastric remnant cancers after benign conditions, P < 0.05), location away from the anastomosis (83 versus 25 per cent, P < 0.

The prophylactic effect of acyclovir (ACV) on varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection in leukaemia patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was reviewed. The benefits of the use of the laminar air flow (LAF) room in the prevention of nosocomial VZV infections in the haematological ward are also discussed. Since 1986 ACV has been administered to BMT patients to prevent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.

Levels of the membrane complement regulatory proteins, C3b/C4b receptor (CR1, CD35), membrane cofactor protein (MCP, CD46), and decay-accelerating factor (DAF, CD55), expressed on cells from patients with haematological malignancies and normal subjects were assessed by flowcytometry using the respective monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). All myeloid and most lymphoid leukaemia samples tested were CR1-negative: two of the 42 leukaemia samples expressed minute amounts of CR1. Lack of CR1 in leukaemia cells was confirmed with two mAbs raised against CR1, 31R, and 243R, which recognized different epitopes and induced different degrees of CR1-mediated fluorescent shift on flow-cytometry in granulocytes and erythrocytes.

We have established an ELISA for determination of membrane cofactor protein (MCP, CD46) both solubilized from cell membranes and released in body fluids. In this assay, mouse MoAbs against MCP, M177 and M160 whose epitopes were different, were used as capture and detection antibodies, respectively. The NP-40 concentration in samples for MCP to be measured must be less than 0.

This article reports a rare case of successful surgery for both lung and adrenal metastases after hepatic resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A 55-year-old Japanese man with a 5-year history of chronic liver disease was admitted with an elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) value and a liver tumour detected by ultrasonography. Hepatic angiogram showed a tumour stain with the right hepatic vein as a venous drain from the tumour.

The effect on the recurrence of gastric ulcers after suppression of Helicobacter pylori by combined treatment with cimetidine and the antimicrobial drug cefixime was investigated. Twenty one of 43 patients with endoscopically proved gastric ulcer and H pylori infection were randomly assigned to receive cimetidine 800 mg daily for 12 weeks; the remaining 22 patients received cimetidine 800 mg daily for 12 weeks plus cefixime 100 mg daily for the last two weeks. After treatment, 88% of 17 patients on cimetidine only remained H pylori positive, whereas combined administration of cimetidine and cefixime had suppressed H pylori in 78% of 18 patients (p less than 0.

Gastric emptying was compared in patients with gastric cancers and fundal gastritis to determine its value in identifying patients at high risk of gastric cancer. Gastric emptying was measured by the acetaminophen absorption method, and the extent of fundal gastritis was determined by the endoscopic Congo red test. The results showed that gastric emptying was significantly slower in patients with severe fundal gastritis than in those without.

A 57-year-old male with primary intracranial malignant melanoma who survived 9 years and 6 months is reported. He underwent surgical removal of the tumour three times during the decade 1978 to 1988, and received chemo-immuno-radiotherapy during that time. Acute tumour growth, suggesting tumour dissemination, was seen in the CT scans after the third removal of recurrent tumour, but then it disappeared after combined chemoradiotherapy with DTIC.

Borrmann type 4 gastric carcinoma, including linitis plastica, is difficult to detect at an early stage and the results of surgical treatment remain poor. We have used 'left upper abdominal evisceration plus Appleby's method (LUAE + Apl.)' as a radical surgical procedure for this disease.

In order to examine time trends of the prevalences of HBeAg positives among HBV carriers in Japan, we analysed data on HBeAg of HBsAg positive voluntary blood donors (23,560 males, and 8659 females) at the Osaka Red Cross Blood Centre between January 1977 and March 1984. Age-specific prevalences of HBeAg positives decreased year by year for both sexes, especially for those in their teens and twenties. The prevalences of HBeAg positives decreased with age, but at any given age it was lower for the later than for the earlier birth cohorts.
