Amylin, also known as islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), is a pancreatic βcell peptide hormone involved in satiation and control food intake. It is also produced in smaller quantities by neurons, the gastrointestinal tract, and spinal ganglia. Numerous studies have revealed that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cognitive deficits exhibit IAPP deposits in the pancreas, brain, and blood vessels.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study highlights the need for a quantitative approach to understanding mental illness in children, using exploratory bifactor methods to examine how various psychological features, like psychotic-like experiences and autism symptoms, fit into broader models of psychopathology.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 11,185 children aged 9-10, utilizing a mix of child and parent reports on various mental health symptoms, confirming strong relationships between different measures and key demographic factors such as age and sex.
  • - Findings revealed that psychotic-like experiences are indicative of a general risk for mental illness, while other symptoms, like those from autism and impulsivity, were categorized into distinct factors, supporting the validity of these dimensions in assessing children's mental health.

Background: Adolescents with depression often experience relationship problems with their caregivers, which predict poorer treatment outcomes. Personalising interventions by targeting factors associated with poor treatment outcomes may enhance the effectiveness of interventions. We report the development and initial evaluation of an intervention designed to target caregiver-adolescent relationship problems in the context of adolescent depression.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to test the feasibility of a multidisciplinary care pathway designed for treating adolescent depression, incorporating assessment, education, therapy, and medication management alongside regular team reviews with the adolescents.
  • - Conducted over 20 weeks, the pilot trial compared this new care pathway to standard treatment, involving 66 adolescents (35 in the pathway group and 31 in the control group), with a focus on clinician fidelity and adolescent engagement.
  • - Results showed high fidelity (95%) and engagement (80%), along with significant reduction in depression symptoms over time in both groups, indicating that such a complex intervention is feasible and warrants further research.

Rationale And Objectives: Little are known about nicotine dependence (ND), perceived stress, and willingness to quit smoking at different treatment stages in patient with affective disorders (AD). This study aimed to evaluate the association between ND and perceived stress among patients with AD presenting with psychiatric treatment at different clinical stages (first visit or follow-up), and in different nicotine type users (cigarette and waterpipe smokers). We also aimed to evaluate the willingness to quit smoking and its association with barriers to quitting.

Objectives: Vascular-brain associations are well established in adults but neglected in youth and psychiatric populations, who are at greater cardiovascular risk. We therefore examined the association of retinal vascular caliber with regional brain structure in adolescents with and without bipolar disorder (BD).

Methods: One hundred and three adolescents ( = 51 BD,  = 52 healthy control [HC]) completed retinal fundus imaging, yielding arteriolar and venular diameters, followed by T1-weighted 3-Tesla MRI.

To identify knowledge gaps regarding new-onset agitation and impulsivity prior to onset of cognitive impairment or dementia the International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment Neuropsychiatric Syndromes (NPS) Professional Interest Area conducted a scoping review. Extending a series of reviews exploring the pre-dementia risk syndrome Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), we focused on late-onset agitation and impulsivity (the MBI impulse dyscontrol domain) and risk of incident cognitive decline and dementia. This scoping review of agitation and impulsivity pre-dementia syndromes summarizes the current biomedical literature in terms of epidemiology, diagnosis and measurement, neurobiology, neuroimaging, biomarkers, course and prognosis, treatment, and ongoing clinical trials.

Background: Spending time outdoor has been identified as an important way to achieve the physical activity required for maintaining and improving health and to lower sedentary time among young children. However, evidence of such relationships in adolescents is particularly limited. This study investigated the relationships between frequency of outdoor physical activity after school, compliance with the physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration recommendations, and overweight/obesity among adolescents.

Objective: We aimed to delineate the distribution of periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) in patients with 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) and place this in the context of other genetic forms of PNH.

Objective: Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) is becoming increasingly popular in noninvasive preoperative language mapping, as its results correlate well enough with those obtained by direct cortical stimulation (DCS) during awake surgery in adult patients with tumor. Reports in the context of epilepsy surgery or extraoperative DCS in adults are, however, sparse, and validation of nTMS with DCS in children is lacking. Furthermore, little is known about the risk of inducing epileptic seizures with nTMS in pediatric epilepsy patients.

Objective: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of real-world evidence for the use of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and clinicaltrials.gov for all relevant articles.

Objective: Social networking sites (SNSs) not only offer users an opportunity to link with others but also allow individuals to compare themselves with other users. However, the link between the use of SNSs and the dissatisfaction with body weight is largely unknown. We investigated the associations between the use of SNSs and the perception of body weight and related behaviours among adolescent men and women.
