In living organisms, calcium carbonate biomineralization combines complex bio-controlled physical and chemical processes to produce crystalline hierarchical hard tissues (usually calcite or aragonite) typically from an amorphous precursor phase. Understanding the nature of the successive transient amorphous phases potentially involved in the amorphous-to-crystalline transition requires characterization tools, which are able to provide a spatial and spectroscopic analysis of the biomineral structure. In this work, we present a highly sensitive coherent Raman microscopy approach, which allows one to image molecular bond concentrations in post mortem shells and living animals, by exploiting the vibrational signature of the different carbonates compounds.

The pearl-farming industry depends mostly on the natural recruitment of pearl oysters. Little is known about the relative influence of different ecological processes on the natural recruitment of pearl oysters across biogeographical scales. This editorial presents results of the MANA (MANagement of Atolls) project compiled in the form of a Marine Pollution Bulletin collection of 14 articles. MANA is a project funded by the French Agence National pour la Recherche that specifically addresses the development of knowledge and management tools for pearl farming atolls, with a focus on the spat collecting activity in French Polynesia. The 14 papers cover the range of thematic tasks described in the initial project, including atoll geomorphology and bathymetry, climate forcing, atoll lagoon and rim hydrodynamics, typology of atolls, evaluation of remote sensing data for monitoring atoll lagoons, and development of numerical models and spatially-explicit tools that altogether have contributed to the applied objectives.

Biomineralization integrates complex physical and chemical processes bio-controlled by the living organisms through ionic concentration regulation and organic molecules production. It allows tuning the structural, optical and mechanical properties of hard tissues during ambient-condition crystallisation, motivating a deeper understanding of the underlying processes. By combining state-of-the-art optical and X-ray microscopy methods, we investigated early-mineralized calcareous units from two bivalve species, Pinctada margaritifera and Pinna nobilis, revealing chemical and crystallographic structural insights.

Elucidating the role of prokaryotic symbionts in mediating host physiology has emerged as an important area of research. Since oysters are the world's most heavily cultivated bivalve molluscs, numerous studies have applied molecular techniques to understand the taxonomic and functional diversity of their associated bacteria. Genetic sex determination (GSD) can evolve from environmental sex determination (ESD) via an intermediate state in which both coexist in the same population. Such mixed populations are found in the crustacean Daphnia magna, where non-male producers (NMP, genetically determined females) coexist with male producers (MP), in which male production is environmentally inducible and can also artificially be triggered by exposure to juvenile hormone. This makes Daphnia magna a rare model species for the study of evolutionary transitions from ESD to GSD.

The objective of this study was to observe the impact of temperature on pearl formation using an integrative approach describing the rotation of the pearls, the rate of nacre deposition, the thickness of the aragonite tablets and the biomineralizing potential of the pearl sac tissue though the expression level of some key genes. Fifty pearl oysters were grafted with magnetized nuclei to allow the rotation of the pearls to be described. Four months later, 32 of these pearl oysters were exposed to four temperatures (22, 26, 30 and 34°C) for 2 weeks.

Ageing is defined as the progressive decline in tissue and organ functions over time. Nucleated pearls are produced by molluscs of the Pinctada genus through the biomineralisation activity of the pearl sac tissue within the recipient oyster. The pearl sac originates from graft tissue taken from the donor oyster mantle and its functioning is crucial in determining key factors that impact pearl quality surface characteristics. The specific role of related gene regulation during gem biogenesis was unknown, so we analysed the expression profiles of eight genes encoding nacreous (PIF, MSI60, PERL1) or prismatic (SHEM5, PRISM, ASP, SHEM9) shell matrix proteins or both (CALC1) in the pearl sac (N = 211) of Pinctada margaritifera during pearl biogenesis.
